some people buy classic cars, furniture, go on holidays, piss it against the wall, gamble etc etc what someone wants to pay its what someone wants to pay really:mellow:

They are superb 'soft roaders' and amongst the BMW fanatics airheads are considered more robust than the later R259 engined models.

I could go on but the net is full of GSs that have been ridden round the world. A mate overseas has over 500000 ks on his. You do have to do the maintenance on them though. You cannot neglect them like a Jappa.

For $7900 it would have to be a good 'un.

Ok lets just say you want a largish capacity road bike that is quite capable of some off road duty...what do you buy?
You want something simple to work on,and no more then two cyclinders(less =more)

I don't know where your diagnosis of them comes from, you don't appear to be an BMW owner so not sure what experience you are drawing from or whether you've just decided to seize on uneducated heresay and rumour.

Newer BMW's may or may not be expensive to repair, I dunno. But the parts I have bought for mine I've thought were all resonably priced. No worse than bits for the many jappa's or the Ducati I've owned. Mine is the same as in the auction but a '94. The same bike bar a few cosmetic differences.

The one exception to that are clutch cables. For some reason the importer or someone in the chain thinks they can rape us $96NZ for a part that costs $15US in the land of the free.

As for unreliable yeah one of mine has recently broken down, looks like an electrical failure. It's only done 250,000km too. The other ones done 80,000km and I think might just be run in in another 20,000.

I think part of that price is to do with that particular model and simple supply and demand of them. Added to that is choice within that market segment and price range.

Ride quality features in the decision, sure old airheads are comparatively agricultural but they have a balance I've not experienced on any other bike which makes off road work far easier than the size and weight would indicate, they are far more capable than people think.

Beyond that you'd have to ride one to find out.

And believe it or not but you can't buy a brand new air head BMW R100GS PD these days. So if you want one you've got to pay the price. Some CBR250's still go for that money and I know which I'd rather have.
