View Full Version : I've bloody done it now! (Bought a Honda)
Ride it till the red

So, 2005 CR250 is now sitting alongside the RM.
WHAT A PIG! I shouldn't be so harsh as it's basically only cosmeticly disgusting, hand holes cut in the airbox, butchered rear guard and a few other minors make it look rediculous but are able to be reversed. Seems mechanically ok tho, few things to twiddle with and replace (fucking bikes are constantly taking away my pay check as it is!) but nothing terrible. Got a FMF fatty and a PowerCore 2 so hopefully that'll add to the fun?
So, what to look out for? Common problems? Boooom? Cheese? Other Honda lovers?
List for 2moro arvo:
Gearbox fluid
Air filter
Clean and oil and attempt to revive chain
Grips and bar ends if I can manage to afford them whilst picking up RM parts
Put air in tires (might need new tubes but I bloody hope not)
Price up fork seals (just starting to leak, how hard are they to do?)
Bodge up the airbox for now
Get rubber exhaust joiner on properly to stop leak
Go over bike, tighten and check
Price up airbox, rear guard, pads both ends, possible bottom shock bush and whatever else I find needs it
As well as picking up RM parts and getting it serviced and sorted for Kuratau!
I knew I was addicted, but a Honda?

I've got an 05 CR250 too, riden a mates 07 RM250 and find my bike's powerband a heck of a lot harsher. Also the bike feels a lot higher than the RM. Personally I think they're a shit load sexier too with the Ally frame and the hidden fuel tank.
Let us know how it run's in the way of Carb settings etc. Some people tend to complain bout theres detonating etc.

nothing wrong with hondas, i had a 2001 CR250 for years and it never broke down. the fmf pipe made a huge difference to mine as well as a wiesco piston.
:bash:OOOPS! I MEAN HONDAS ARE SHIT KTM'S ARE THE BEST. HA HA HA:bash:

You mean apart from it catching fire... lol
Hondas are awesome... the CR's are the sexiest bike ever made [standard]. Handlings awesome. Not quite as much balls as the others, but it hits harder.
Dont bog the holes, You just have to learn fmx! haha

And the red fans come out again! Photo's will be arranged.
My RM has a flywheel weight (this doesn't to my knowledge) and yet from the quick blat on the Honda I would say the band hits in a similar fashion.
Couldn't comment on height as the Honda has had the seat cut which I must say might be helpful at my height although it does look slightly funny.
Detonating, how do I tell? Nothing sounds out of the ordinary whilst riding will comment back after a good fang but wouldn't wanna do damage unknowingly.
Should be fun to compare them and play on something new

you'll know if its detonating, it makes a loud rattling sound on acceleration. mine will do it if i use anything shitter than 98 fuel.
jetting wise, i still never bothered to check mine, but i know its running a 430 main which is up 10 fron the standard 420.
the exaust seal works better also with a couple of cable ties in the grooves to hold it tighter, and also jam some hi temp silicone around where the front pipe inserts into the fitting on the cylinder, the o rings wear out quick and dont work so well..
other things to look out for are huge amounts of fun, huge amounts of power, and high levels of addiction.

It's a Honda.... it makes itself look silly!
450's on the other hand? Pfffft! Boring! And hey, weren't you looking at an EXC recently?
Guess we'll have to line em up once your back on the bike, how's recovery going anyhow?

the shoulder's getting better mate but still no good for riding... very slow. But on the bright side (not) I just got back from dave's place to look at my bike properly for the first time since i crashed it up and the bottom tripple clamp is broken in 2 pieces... uh oh... that'll be at least $500... fuckitty fuckitty fuck

Congrats on the upgrade. I switched from a Rm to a CR and loved it! the CRs power is much more expolsive than the RM, but once you are used to it you will love it!!! if you find it too hard hitting, get a flywheel weight.

So, embarrassingly enough, I think I might kind of like the thing....
Up and down the drive today seemed good, be good to give it a good testing.
Done: Gearbox fluid
Done: Air filter
Done: Clean and oil and attempt to revive chain
Done: Put air in tires
Done: Get rubber exhaust joiner on properly to stop leak
Done: Go over bike, tighten and check
Done (ouch!): Price up airbox, rear guard, pads both ends, bottom shock bush, fork seals, grips and bar ends
Should get an airbox (only real pressing issue) next week if I'm onto it and will be able to take it somewhere for a decent thrashing after work one day!
Bring on Kuratau this weekend! (on the RM although i seriously considered trying to get the Honda ready)

Ok so today was the test, went for a quick ride up the forest.
Rides nice, the seat being cut down makes a big difference I think. Made me stand alot more which is obviously a good thing.
Needs bottom shock mount bush done, and even more importantly the fork seals - ASAP! Will clean disc and replace front pads after this and hopefully that will sort out the lack of powerful braking.
Front wasn't very confidence inspiring, lack of perfection in not only forks but brake and a bit too much air is my explanation for now.
Power was in no way an issue, it hauls along quite nicely! Comes on smooth with no major hit to speak of, a great low and mid power curve letting me flick the front over obstacles with ease from low rpm. Clutch and box both seem good. Gear shift is high compared to what I'm used to but it's perfect for hooking the next gear and not too hard to chop back down and of course can be fiddled with.
So it will be going to the shop next week for fork seals and shock mount bush. I'll grab some brake pads and chuck those at it as well as a rear guard to keep my back slightly cleaner.
Now here's my issue - Detonation?!? Is it? Isn't it? If it is then how do I fix it? If it isn't then whats the slight clacking that I sometimes heard normally at low rpm when coming from off throttle to on it? I'm pretty sure I can hear the afore mentioned rattling under acceleration at some stages. The gas I had in it was 98 that I premixed a month ago now so getting a bit old and possibly the only reason? I'll be doing a bit of a search on jetting now to see if I need to play with that? I'm assuming it's standard at this stage so would I be correct in thinking it's best left that way?
Now I'm flicking through brouchures ticking things it could do with, every bike needs a lil bling! (even a honda :( )

Yes it is and good luck, I would have warned you about this if you had given some notice, these bikes are very tricky to jet with any degree of satisfaction, Honda had given up on the two stroke and never sorted this model out and they seem to run rich and detonate at the same time.
I may have posted some specs on this bike so a search might bring something up, but I was never happy with the jetting on one of these despite spending a bit of time trying to get it right.
Firstly try retarding the timing about an 1/8" or a coin width and then start on the jetting.

Here you go, a quick search brought these two threads up, I know there is more as well.

mine is the only one ive ever heard detonate, and ive ridden a few.
apparently though the reason mine was detonating was due to having the wrong spark plug - it had a BR9 in it, and apparently should have an 8. i am yet to test it with the 8. it had a 9 in it when i got it, and i replaced it with a 9 last time. that said, i wear spark plugs out, not fuck them due to fouling.
the detonating you should only hear under acceleration if its happening at all.
these bikes seem to get a lot of bad press from everyone who hasnt owned one for supposed jetting issues, none of which im aware of in a first hand sence, and i have 5 mates with them or that have had them recently.

Cheers Danger much appreciated!
I hate thinking about things like this whilst riding as it makes me paranoid about every little sound I think I can hear....
Am I right in thinking the detonation is related to running lean? And could possibly be fiixed by adjusting the air screw to make it a bit richer?
Now I remember why I love my RM, it's trouble free!
When I get the rest sorted I'll have to see whats possible

Wouldn't have bought it otherwise mate.... Cheapest 05 I could see on T Me was 4.5k and this one will come in happily under that once I've sorted suspension, pads, rear guard and sorted out this jetting plus a fresh top end (not that it needs it yet). With any luck the detonation shouldn't be too hard to get past and I should have a sweet little bike to play on

THe CRs can sound noisy and its the power valve moving.
Pop the cover off teh power valve and check teh cables. its common for them to break about now on your one.
