Hi. So... I had a 2007 Yamaha scorpio but skidded on some gravel and crashed her. Still sad about that. Will need some repairs but just can't afford and no full insurance so I'll need to sell it in a "as is" condition.
Anyway, with that money I want to buy another but obviously cheaper motorcycle so does anyone have any ideas? Model name suggestions appreciated.
I thought maybe a second hand Honda Ct110 or a suzuki gn125? Yeah I know there's gonna be less power but I'm just gonna have to live with it... The cheaper the ideas the better without being too crap. I.e. 50cc

How cheap are we talking? You can get GN250s and FXRs for under $2,000.

Yeah a bike under $2,000 is what I need. It just depends on how much I can get for the damaged scorpio.
The Honda Ct110 was selling for around $1,500 at a dealer's shop so privately would be around 1,000 I guess. I'm only on a learners too so 250cc restriction.

Why do you want another bike? And do you want one, or need one? And how mechanically capable are you?

Sweet, keep an eye on trademe and you'll be spotting options everywhere. Next time ya get a newer bike, get insurance dude!
Can't remember exactly, but on my CBR250 on learner's license, I had comprehensive insurance for cheap as! And it's worth it.

1. It's fun, cheaper on fuel, free parking. Like to eventually have a bigger, better bike. Girlfriend also wants to learn how to ride.
2. I guess I want it more than I need it. But I don't have a car so a bike would be good to get around especially considering my work is so far away.
3. Very mechanically incapable haha.

Just get the scorpio road leagal and ride the barsted. It will be the cheepest way.

OK. In that case you have to make a value call. You can either get a reaosnably recent reliable smaller bike (Gn125 as you suggest). And quickly become consumed with angst because it is not fast.
Or a (very) old (and very likely unreliable) high performance 250 . Which will be "fun" but will keep you (very !) poor and probably see you back here soon asking the same question.
No free lunch. There isn't a fast 250 , cheap, and reliable . Choose two of the three.
If you just needed transport to school/uni/work it would be easy. Pose value costs.

What's the damage on this Scorpio?
Shouldn't take too much to fix unless you've flipped it end over end, dented the wheel rims, cracked the cases and bent the forks...
List the damage and let's see what we can do to help.

Ok the petrol tank is dented on the left side. The bracket for the exhaust with the pillon holder broke off but I have it sitting here next to me. The front mud guard is cracked. The front tyre is bent out of shape or else the rim is bent out of shape, I'm not sure. I think that's it from what I and others have seen.

Hm. Of that list only the "front tyre bent out of shape" should cost more than $10. But , if the front rim is buckled , odds are the forks are bent? Are they ?
Have you had the damage assesses (even as a "finger in the air") by someone who knows what they are talking about?
Could be it's not as bad as you think. I've seen bikes that have crashed and looked like a pile of scrap metal (NO! Not a BSA there are other sorts of scrap metal) that cost bugger all to fix. And the reverse where what looked like a few scratches turned into a write off.

Seriously bro, I'd get some KB crew around there and figure out exactly what's broken, and find you some second-hand bits, and a ring-spanner and socket set and some hand cleaner.. A couple of evenings or saturdays and you are good to go.
Expect to get your hands dirty. We aint gunna do it for ya, but there are lots of folks here who will teach ya how to unbolt broken bikes and bolt on good bits.

Ok the petrol tank is dented on the left side. Can still ride it with this, fix it when money allowsThe bracket for the exhaust with the pillon holder broke off but I have it sitting here next to meWelder should fix that or wire it in place untill this can be sorted. The front mud guard is cracked.Fix in time, live with it The front tyre is bent out of shape or else the rim is bent out of shape, I'm not sure Would recomend a new tyre (and maby evena new rim if it is bent, this could be up to 350 ish? This would be about the only expensive bit.. I think that's it from what I and others have seen.
Get the forks checked by a bike shop and fix the yammie. It will be by farr the cheepest in 6 months time.

- I don't think the forks are bent, I just had another look at the bike.
- No I haven't had the damage assessed by another professional. My girlfriends father is an electrical engineer and knows about motorbikes. Have to wait about 2 months though before he can get a decent look at it.

Is it kinda ride able?

No because the tyre is quite bent so the handlebars need to be turned to one side quite abit. But yeah a new tyre or fixing the rims may be all that's needed.

OK. If your "bent rim" is just the handlebars needing to be turned to one side, that can usually be fixed for nothing. Zip. Zilch. Your forks just need to be realigned.
Seriously, get an opinion from someone who has some idea. It may be that your "wrecked" bike just needs $50 spent on it . Of course it'll be dented and scratched, but that's not such an issue.

Quite likely.
Anonbiker, if you can spin the front wheel and it runs true there's probably bugger all 10 min with a spanner can't fix.
Where in Wgtn are you?
Plenty of guys in wgtn who'd be able to come and have a look for you i'm sure and they'd probably do it happily for nothing. No use waiting 2 months for an electrical engineer who "knows about bikes". Just how much does he know? Probably some on here who know far more and are able to help quicker for nothing.

If its just that the forks dont face the same way as your handlebars (twisted) pop the front wheel between your legs (or rest the side of the wheel against a wall) and turn the handlebar with a bit of force until it lines up. No major problem.

2 options for you 1st and best option tap into the resorces here on KB and fix the yammy if you can as its a modern bike so there for reliable easy riding style.. with your level of riding still being rather fresh you will benefit in a low maintance bike...get invloved with any work done on the bike and learn from people so you gain a better knowledge of you machine and how it works
2nd option sell yammy as parts and buy something else if you want something under $2000 ok you have the Suzuki GN250 or the honda CB250RS
you can get a later model bike in the GN for the money you want to spend the CB will be mid 80's still plenty of then around but you should get a good one for around 1200 any more than that it would have too be in outstanding condition
but for 1200 you will be able to give the yammy alot of new parts so its a no brainer really:rolleyes:

Hi. Thanks for some of you guys offering to come over to my place and help fix it. Problem is I'm staying with my dad due to financial trouble and he wouldn't be very welcoming to other people coming around to his place. Especially pro-motorcycle people as he's very anti motorcycles.
I'll still think about it though if someone is willing to come around. Perhaps on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I can now afford to buy someone a doz too for their help haha.

You're lucky you have a dad who lets you stay with him when you actively pursue something he is heavily against.

The plot thickens... I'm actually planning to fix the bike up and then sell it for as much as possible. I'll probably get a bike a-bit later once I have a job sorted and have moved out.
