View Full Version : Geeks - computer naming schemes
Mental Trousers

So the boss says I'm not allowed to name new machines after porn stars (I'd love to work on JennaHaze or HannaHilton ..... ) which means I need a new scheme for naming machines.
The obvious ones suck too much, ie characters from tv shows/movies etc. There's only so many Roman gods you can use before people can't spell their names. Some freaks object to having anything named MarilynManson in the office so musicians are out.
Suggestions please.

fighters/bombers? That way you'll get a serial "F-14" and a name "tomcat"... Unless you plan on having over a few hundred servers then you should be pretty sweet for some time yet.

Planets/stars/constellations.
Unfortunately we have 250 servers here so we have to have a sensible naming convention so we can figure out what the hell a machine is doing.

For a small number of servers we often use colours.
For a large number we prefix the name with a site id, then server function, then server number. e,g. akl-exch-01.
Chuck Norris
just call all of them Chuck Norris
I don't need to explain why

Would JennaHilton and HannaHaze be acceptable - as far as I know there aren't any pornstars with those names... yet.
You could always go for anagrams.

I use Fish (Tropicals) names at home, but at work we used Famous Explorers (like Hillary, Tenzing & Tasman) for the server network and BMX/MTB Riders for the internal office network LOL

I've always liked:
File01, File02, ...
Web01, ...
Database01, ...
And such.
I get very tired of having to remember if "Tui" or "Phoenix" is the web server or what.

At work we've started using tennis players.
Our three new web servers are Borg, Federer and Nadal. Borg's serve has been a bit off since last Wednesday.

Got one customer who names their servers after fictional/mythical characters.
azrael
banshee
centaur
crippen
cyclops
draco
dracula
gargamel
ghoul
gigan
godzilla
greyhawk
gryffon
hydra
jabberwock
kraken
mesaana
nymph
ogre
orc
sphinx
tarkin
vader
warlock
witch
wolfman
wraith
wyvern
zelda
zurg
While another customer just uses two letters followed by four numbers. Bloody confusing when it's hundreds of servers. :eek5:

For some reason, most of our servers at work start with a 'Z', then the name of the function, e.g., "zdomain" for our domain server, "ztesting" for testing, and so on.
At home, #2Geek/Son calls them seemingly random, unrelated names: succubus (used for sucking stuff out of the Interdweeb), kain ("karen and ian"), greenie (now defunct, but was once spray-painted green), and I don't know the other four machines, but I think one's called 'chronokun' which is what #3Son's name is (apparently).
The wireless network has some totally random name (literally) "because it's more secure", unlike the neighbour's wireless, which gets used sometimes "to teach him not to be so dumb".

No. No. No!
Eventually you'll end up with a server called Uranus. Which leads to awkward dialogue like the following:
"What did you do with the files for the ABC project?"
"I been storing them in Uranus".

Our work ones are generally named for the Telecom abbreviation for the region (HN for Hamilton etc), the subnet its on, its purpose and generation. Like HN33FP2 for the 2nd File & Print server on the Hamilton 33 subnet.
My home boxen are generally interesting latin words.
Mortis, Obitus, Servitus, etc

There is a shipping line that names their ships after planets a little awkward name on the radio. (http://www.strangevehicles.com/content/item/113019.html)

Not strictly related to naming servers, but in the same spirit is a story I heard some years ago involving a major IT company.
This company had for years used TLAs to name its projects. Once project ZZZ was completed, a new naming convention was needed.
European rivers were chosen, but these were exhausted in reasonably short order.
Along came Project Phlegm. Fearing a plethora of projects named for bodily fluids, senior management swooped and suggested that FLAs could be used for project names...

Here everyone's workstation is named after a sesame street character that most closely resembles their personality.
ie.
Grumpy Boss: Oscar
Girl Who is Constantly Eating: Miss Piggy
Strange mishapen guy: Floyd
Token Gay Guy: Elmo
Me: Animal

We use girls names - yes mainly pornstar names - but you only need the first name.
Nobody can object to working on 'Jessica'.....
but when you work on Jessica...... you can be thinking about working Jessica Alba (http://thetrawbros.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/jessica-alba-bikini-07.jpg)

I've seen all sorts....... such as Gandolf / Stonebow (Otago uni), through to the Periodic element tables and even plane jane stuff like the Universe planet names.
I've never come across porn star names yet, hell I'm in the wrong job :)

If you want a laugh, I remember one of the guys working on Cecil at Auckland Uni had his own server called Pikachu... I'm sure there are a lot of those names...
For our own sites, they are incredibly boring in comparison to you lot... company shortcode, machine suffix (srv for server, ws for workstation, lp for laptop, and so on) then a 3 digit number.
Hard part is when they change their name several times over

Elements - the hydrogen, helium, carbon etc. ones. You're not going to run out unless you're google and most people can spell most of them.

I've used animal diseases in the past. When someone I didn't like got a unix box I gave them really long names.
Here's a starter for 10

oh dear god ! ... LOL .
I enforce a naming standard that goes on company, business unit, location, function, number.
makes it easy to know what a system does just by looking at the name..
i still get pissed off when i find servers named after characters from Xmen .. LOL ... what the hell does that system do ???

You'll run out of names any any larg(ish) corporate.
A good rule of thumb is 4-5 users per server. Therefore plan in your naming scheme to support that many servers.
Personally, I prefer swear words or bodily functions.. causes much embarrassment and confusion... plus you get to invent some:
fart
shit
burp
convulse
pee
boopalate
expressions like
"I need to drop fart" or "burp won't come up" make sense to everyone.
etc.

An educational alternative - we used to use Greek Gods... sadly... and ironicvally because my previous suggestion of supermodels was seen through by management

The last few machines I've just pulled names out of my arse
desktops:
womble (mine)
wibble
jeremy
yomama (that's reserved for 1 of the guys so he can say with a straight face that he's working on yomama)
servers:
monster - can't use swear words so fuckenshitstainwankerpieceofarsehair wasn't allowed
chucky
At home I've got
roflcopter
lolzskates
pants
Haircuts could be interesting
mullet
shortbacknsides
flattop
brazilian
... and quite a few others
Countries of the world are good for 195 machines.
Spank should use Serial Killers names.
Body parts would be interesting. There's too many people and not enough embarassing names
vulva
sphincter
nuts
penis
nosehair
pubes
dangleberry
Sensible naming schemes based on function, location etc are the reason CNAME's exist!!
Lot's to consider ...
