For small streams its always been - sit it on the back wheel and keep your feet dry  - but then thats usually been on the Gas Gas

I kneel on the seat.

Gives more control.

For those that did the run last year these bits are not that different from Altimarlock but if you really didn't like it then I'd suggest you go around. Both sections can be got around but you miss a lot of the route if you don't go over Omarama Saddle. Skipping Black Forest doesn't miss that much of the route.

...we could all stay home, and miss out the entire event.

It's not that scary - I've ridden through Black Forest in the dark (F650) and in thick fog (CT110), and strongly believe in riding to the conditions. With no visibility there's no distraction.

Old fossils (me!) remember in the 70's, in the Heatway Rally, BF was a special stage at night, and no one went over the edge.

I've been known to launch off a rock and park with front wheel below the edge but personally I have no fear of that happening on any of the DB routes.

Yep. Just want people to know what they might be getting themselves into and know there is an option if it all turns to custard.

When at Uni I use to do a heap of mountain climbing. I got sick of the number of times I'd have to baby (put the left foot here and the right foot here now put the left foot there...) somebody off a mountain cause they lost it. Not fun for anybody!

Fair enough.

By co-incidence, I had my first mountain climbing experience last weekend, on a guided trip to Ruapehu's summit. Despite the apalling weather overnight, it was a great experience, and I didn't need to be babied at all.

But I'm getting off the point.

I agree that providing riders are given a reasonable overview of the course, then they can decide how to approach it, but I'd hate to see someone put off from riding two of the more spectactular sections, just because they have to ride properly to get through unscathed.

On staying in the South for about 10-12 days, this includes the DB ride...
Pretty much zig zag down the North Island, catch the ferry on the 14th evening or morning, then zig, zig, and a bit of a zag towards....Fairlie, missing as much tar as the GPS can find me! ;)
After the DB? Who knows? Find some metal and some mining roads and some trails, explore, get lost and eat lotsa fish and chips! :)

I considered doing the tent trip down, but bugger it, by the time I buy a tent/new sleeping bag/all the other gear you need, I could probably stay in 5 star hotels the whole trip for less, so I am just going to camping ground cabin/motel/b&b my way south, and because of the 690's lack of ability to carry much gear, makes that seem like the logic choice for me.

But I do intend on stealing my bro's gear and heading backwoods for a night or two, but a week of it going soth does not appeal so much.

Ok...Heading down south 9th or 10th, taking the long way down to the ferry, lots of metal and maybe a ride north first...
Then, heading across on the 3am ferry 11th Jan. After that, dunno?
Plan is to have breakfast in Blenheim or Picton...Hit the Port Underwood Rd, down to Molesworth, do that and sleep either in Hanmer or on the Molesworth. Prefer to nap out in the wild....
Next day, up to Rainbow, up to Nelson area, back roads, Mo...(5 mins out of town, from Nellywood..:)) or whatever it is called...:) Ride across and then as I will be back on the East coast I suppose, head somewhere for the night.
I want to get to Reefton, do some mine and river roads, Porika and the Braeburn, then meander down to Fairlie.....
I think four days to get to Fairlie is good and leaves plenty of time to ride....Doesn't get dark till late and I am a very early riser..:)
Coming home....Well, I have another two whole days, maybe three, I will explore the Catlans possibly or head up to Mid Canterbury and do some of those other roads that might get me lost, in trouble and maybe even sideways...

Anybody keen to sort of do this, loosley organised, lots of Kilometres? Might meet for a yarn or coffee....Maybe exchange numbers to rendezvous?

If you want to pretend your are real Dakar rider get your high lighters out and mark up the roll chart. You could mark all of the instructions where the following instruction is less than 1km further on. I've put a little sign type symbol in the cell if the next one is less than a 1km away.

The other thing that everybody should take note of/mark up is the challenge loop. The challenge loop is cells 94 to 96 inclusive then jumps to cell 100 once back on the base route. The base route jumps from cell 93 to 97 then continues on.

Seriously, I'm looking at changing the rear and ideally want to run a Tourance (cause it's lying around the shed) as there is a lot of road kms between here and the DB, is that a sensible choice or not? If a knobbly is required I will stick another MT21 on.....sensible advice please!

Ta, Iain

In the interests of informing all a Mitas E07 would be fine for the ride unless you plan on doing the challange loop which will require either a bit of pushing for up to 50m or a MT21/D606/E09. There are some other short boggy bits but the E07 will handle them.

The biggest risk is if it rains. About 200kms of the tracks are dirt which will become slippery if wet.

Safest bet is to stick on the tourance for the trip down and order yourself a E07/E09/knobblie of your choice in Chch that you pick up on the way down. Alternatively order and pay for a tyre and I'll collect the week before and trailer it down on the Friday.

Stickers are $5 each
Black forest toll is $10 each bike. I'll be collecting this on the Friday night and dropping it in on my way through on Saturday before the main bunch arrives.

Hi Guys and Gals. The GPS files are now available from my website (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1kssi.html). Let me know if there are any issues

The whole route is too long to have one GPS route file so it is in parts. There are two options one for older GPS units and one for newer GPS units. All pretty obvious but the part that is labelled X is the Challenge loop.

When on the seal at the northern end of the Molesworth (from SH1 or Taylors Pass) you turn right through a gate (normal gate not deer fence gate) at the point where the seal ends. There other patches of seal further south but just look for the first bit of gravel. It had a "Private Property - No Entry" sign but that is bollocks. The roll chart (here (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1knsi/Dusty%20Butt%20V4nsi.pdf)) for the original route has the details. The turn is 18.6km from the Taylors Pass intersection.

The track up the hill is pretty obvious - it is the most used one.

Another though - zoom in to the map on this page (http://www.advroutes.org.nz/db1knsi.html) and you can see the route over aerials if you want or download the KML file and open it in google earth, or better still if you have a GPS download the GPS file for the original route.

I've had a couple of people comment that when use they chose the "follow road" option on their GPS after selecting "navigate" for the DB1k route, the GPS complains that it can only use a 50 point route. Please do not choose the "follow road" option but rather the "off road" option. This allows the GPS to use as route file with as many points as it can handle (normally 250 points but 50 points on some older models).

The "follow road" option is designed for use with auto routing maps so does not need as many points. Problem with this is that there are no roads in the auto routing maps for much of the DB1k route. I have put enough strategically located points in the route files so that you can use the "off road" option and you should not get lost;)

If anybody is still having problems with the route file, feel free to ask me more questions and/or to bring your GPS and a USB cable to the BBQ. There will be a laptop available with the route files loaded and I'll do my best to get your GPS working.

Cheers R

The BBQ at the Gladstone Pub is at 6pm - $10pp (though you all knew that already right!)
You need to give me $10 at the BBQ for access to various tracks. Two $5 would be preferred as I have to deliver $5 per bike to two farms.

c.h.r.i.s.'s old man may be able to help but this is fairlie so pretty much any place should be safe! You could probably leave your car in the Gladstone pub carpark (round the back). It is large enough we use to park 4 trucks and trailers and a couple of runabouts there when I worked in one of Fulton Hogan's chipsealing gangs.

Andy - I've wimped out and am taking the little DR given the % of gravel - I find the 1150 can be a handful in the deep 'windrows' around the McKenzie country and I feel more comfortable on the lighter bike in such conditions.

As to travel - I'll riding through Molesworth or Rainbow (the latter, if i get a 'buddy') leaving Picton between 11.30 & noon on the Thursday before the event.

I cut up the Road Book today and put it into the lunch box....It sure is small,:2thumbsup I mean not many legs. This must mean there is a shit load of riding before turning....That's great! :)
I also found out that for the Dakar 2010, the GPS is only used for the last 3Km of each stage, the ride still has to be done by the road books. The beacons are turned on and they can find the waypoint home ONLY for the last 3Km....;)
So, using a Road Book in my mind is a sound way of navigating and having the GPS as the back up is prudent too....:)
Ryan, turn off the beacons...lol

Yes, this is cool as I can move it around, mount it in a different place. I get home, play around with the editing, paste in music and go from there. I have found the best position is the helmet or goggle strap.
The rear vibrates a little, the front has the big DR beak gettin' in the way, the only real hard footage that is steady is the 'swede'....Me! :)

Is it worth entering the Molesworth from Taylors Pass Rd? The road looks like a curly one from Renwick end. The side trip is something I would like to to up Altimarloch. Both Aslan and I will be crusing this area Thursday arfternoon, quite possibly we might run into each other somewhere...So, keep to the left..:)

being a somewhat slow 'senior' I'm just catching up with this flurry of activity - happy to ride either Rainbow or Molesworth - alone or with Mark aka NZKTM and anyone else on the proviso I don't get into Picton till 11.30am earliest so reallistically expect to leave Picton noon Thursday.

I salute MattsDakar for initiating Orari Gorge excursion on Fri and would like to be part of that. I'm unsure how far I'll get on Thursday evening and prior to MattsDakar's initiative I was planning on riding via Lake Lyndon Road out to Methven.

Getting excited - a 60 something year old big kid - cheers all Aslan

The weather forecasts are just starting to get long enought now. It looks like there will be a bit of rain on Thursday morning but clearing by Friday and the Saturday and Sunday will OK overcast but dry. This would be perfect for the Dusty in that it might no be so Dusty

Forecasts I'm watching are Metview (http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nzsi&noofdays=7), Metservice Canty Plains (http://www.metservice.co.nz/rural/canterbury-plains) and Metservice Central Otago (http://www.metservice.co.nz/rural/central-otago). I trust Metvuw more hence my prediction as Metservice is predicting sunny Thursday, showers Friday and Satruday and sunny Sunday. Fingers crossed Metvuw is right!

I did my oil and filter this morning. The clutch cable is a brand newie, the bags are packed and I have prepared a couple fo TV dinners for the ride down. The roll chart is in the 'click clack' and the route is one the GPS too.
I got two new Heidenau tyres not scrubbed in yet, but these will be fine by the time I hit the roads south. New sprockets front and rear and the original wheel back on the bike and looking good. The cush rubbers a little worn is all and these will be replaced sometime soon. I am really looking forward to this as it is my first time in the South Island on the back of a motorbike!

I spent ages looking for a container the right size. Found one but its a bit big then spent a wee while making the rolly bits out of an old alloy footpeg and a guitar string tightener thingy to turn it. needs more work so will either make a simplerer one or just follow the fast guys tracks.

Drill some holes in container, stuck 8mm dowel through. Slightly drill then glue drawer knobs on to one end of dowel and simply taped each side to stop dowel falling out the holes.
Also added some tent pegs cut with straws over to make rolling easier.
The whole thing is friction based to stop it unwinding so I roll the bottom roller to give slack to the chart then roll the top roller to move the chart on.
Tieing the two knobs together didn't work for me no matter how I did it as one end always has more of the roll on than the other. Feel like this has all been typed before.
It's my mk1 holder been with me since the first roll chart adventure years ago.
Note: tape the lid on of loose it sooner or later.

Container size shouldn't be too hard to find. I know they don't do the best sized click clacks anymore but surely you could get anything the right size and tape on a home made perspex lid.

Forgive me if this is a silly question. As the route stands with the waypoints A1-A...whatever. I can load this into my GPS. I have done this, so have the route for the weekend. My question is this Nordie or Ryan please....
When I get going on the Saturday, will the GPS calculate for me using "off road" and retain all the waypoints and give me the turns etc as normal?
OR, do I use Mapsource replot the route as far as I can, let it calculate and then resave it as the DB2010? The thing is, it works well until A65, then we head off road, then I can re-join the route at A68 and then continue. It happens a few times as we are heading off track, then rejoining the roads further along...
I have the roadbook and sort of want to match that to my GPS...

You are making it harder than it is.
If you have the gps set to use "off road calculation" or set to ask you what method to use at which point you choose to use off road calculation then you're done.
Non of this recalculation or reloading in to mapsource or anything.
The lines are guides and go straight from point to point. You will never get them to wiggle along the roads using 'off road' setting without exceeding the gps number of points limit.

If you are trying to match the roll chart with Ryans existing via points then look at the points that are labelled with left/right added. Most(not all) of those ones should approximately match route sheet cells.

My own separate waypoint file that matches cells with locations is here...WaypointsONLY-2010.gpx (http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/9/8/208927/DB1kSSI%20V3-WaypointsONLY-2010.gpx)
Right click, save as.
It is as accurate as I can be as this point in time. Some waypoints are staggered out of each others way a bit where we travel the same roads twice up around Makenzie Pass way for example.
The one thing I'm going to be wary of is the Taranaki gate in the Black Forrest. Location for that is a ball park only.

You lot (and me) a potentially going to see a rare spectacle that not many NZ'ers have seen in person. The Benmore Dam is spilling at present and expected to continue to spill for the next few days. Whether the spilling is right or wrong is another debate but it looks damn impressive - Benmore is probably has the most impressive spillway of any Dam in the SI because of the fin at the end that shoots water up to disapate its energy. There use to be a large rock (natural not placed) in river at the end of the spillway however that was erroded maybe 1.5-2m to below the waterline during spilling last year. I've personally never seen it and it generally only happens for a couple of days a year at most. It sounds like this year is an exception in that there has been so much rain in the head waters around the Main Divide.

190420190421

The DB1k route goes across the top of the Benmore Dam i.e. across the top of the control gates in the first photo so you will get to see the view in the second photo. If you are interested - take the tracks off to the right just as the Dam itself comes into view as you go up the valley and you will be able to get a picture like the first one.

Cheers R

Last time through there I had a pretty close call with a very large very agressive bull, so not so keen to rip through solo. only thing that springs to my mind rogerh is wether you are doing the one or two day version and whether you are booking your own accommodation vs hoping that there are still vacant beds within existing arrangements (I suspect there is).
Also are you wanting to get in on food at the BBQ at the Gladstone on Friday where a kind of briefing wil be held?

Answering those questions may help cooneyr when he goes to reply.

I am more into cruising, and enjoying the country going past, so the two day is good for me. Have never riden most of the counrty, but have taken rental cars and 4WD's across some of it (not saying which bits in what vehicle, or I may not be able to get a rental in the district again....)

With accommodation, I can do either, and if there is none, I would bring a tent, but if some is available I will use it, and if it is not too late to book, i will try and get to the bbq as well

Should be able to keep up with me then. Being of advancing years (a grumpy old git) I ride a gentleman's adventure bike at a gentleman's pace. These gravel rats can shoot off on a roost and dust cloud, I'll just be tagging along at the back as usual :ride:

Bikes all loaded up, went for a shakedown run down the riverbank and nothing came undone so should be all good.

Looks like the weather may be a bit inconsistent until Monday acccording to the tv, but metview says otherwise so who knows really.

Bring on 6 days of riding yeeehaaa.

Its about 400kms to the lake. If they start at about 5.30 as per other years then about from 1300 on but the two dayers tend to be a leisurely lot so maybe a bit later? Hard to predict. Maybe it would be better to get XF650 or TA to give you a text when they leave Ranfurly. They will be a couple of hours getting from Ranfurly to the lake.

Actually them being a leisurely lot they would probably really appreciate the coffee too!

Thanks for that - that would be a nice civilized time for us to get over there and set up !!! Spread the word that we will be somewhere over there - I've got friends with one of the fishing huts at the village so depending on the day annd if they are there we might set up there , otherwise I'll find another spot. I will put some sort of sign up on the road.

Ride safe guys and have a heap of fun - take it easy on that high altitude stuff - its likely to be very slippery clay in quite a few places (= good front tyre and the right pressure) at the moment

I'm not saying I want a sleep in, just don't want to be trying to get up in the silly hours.

Both you and XF make a good point though - varied starting hours and spread out so potential for a wide range of arrival times. I still can't see anybody getting there before about 1300 at the earliest but they still may be going through at 1700.

The blue 450g aerosol ABC type came from Fitness Hire (member razzel1 on TradeMe). The red 'Fire Exit' and the TUNDRA Fire Suppressant are available in Mitre 10, Mega, Placemakers, Bunnings and Briscoes stores. All are $20 - $25. (text and image stolen from 4skins CCA website).

Bloody shame the organisers ride didn't quite go to plan ...............
Seeing as how its all planned out - why not have another go in a couple of weeks ???? - and give some who couldn't make this one another chance

I got to the Lake and set up for the coffee stop about 1:30. I waved down a couple of pairs of riders on my way in from Lawrence - looked like they were really enjoying it.
Only had a couple of bikes come in for coffee - not sure whether my signs weren't big enough (there were a couple of toots), or ,no one trusts my coffee, my deodorant has run out, or you were already so far behind your time schedule that you couldn't afford to stop???

Actually I didn't care - had a great afternoon relaxing at my friends batch, caught up on some reading and was there if needed (I'm pleased I wasn't)
Hope tomorrow goes well and you continue on with a dry track

Things I know so far - there is much more to come I'm sure.
SBC has been concoured - Zerax and Skinny Birdman completed the run in 22.25 hrs
El and I failed big time!
Racing Dave got a chopper ride
The Ausi Safari entrants, Topo and Javahead had an extremly good run
I know of two other riders (X-challange and XR650R) completed the one day run
A XT660R rider had a fall on the one day run and got home by going up the seal from Alex to Omarama
There are a couple of minor issues with the roll chart
The GPS file worked really well
We paid for 49 bikes to go through the Black Forest track which is the best record of the number of bikes entered. This is by far the largest starting field ever - about 1.5 times last years numbers.

Lastly a very very large thankyou to all who helped with preparing for the ride - Cynna for his company on the pre run, Transalper for the same and his help with the roll chart and GPS file, my brother El Scooto and his fiance for their company on the pre run and their help at the BBQ, XF650 for finding the BBQ and Fairlie and Alex accomodation and lastly my wife for tolerating all the hours of me preparing for this ride (and the new route) and her advice and help.

I'm keen to hear all the stories of the fun that was had, advice on issues with the route/roll chart, ideas for next year (lets get them while they are front of mind) and lastly how many times The Pom managed to crash during the ride LOL

Cheers R

Thanks Ryan & team for the hard work on this ride, it was bloody epic!

Only had 2 navigational issues (one included a trip up the Omarama Saddle, which was worth doing anyway). Really enjoyed following the roadbook, next time I shall get a proper (click-click I mean) road book instead of just having the prinout in the tank bag.
You guys did a great job of stringing all these great bits of country together, there was not much boring road stuff between the amazing vistas. I have been around a fair bit of that country before, but never seen it like we did over the weekend.
I spent way too much time on the camera on saturday and only just made it into Lawerence at 4:55pm, the petrol station closed after I filled up. I could have been in trouble if I was much later.

Thanks to all the guys I met and rode with, had a bloody great weekend.

Thepom rode like a tropper on sunday, did not see him fall off even once, no matter how many times I pointed a camera at him.
Here he is doing a crossing on the entry to Little Omarama Saddle.

Everyone I rode with was constantly in awe of the route, the scenery and the amount of time & effort you put into this event. Many times I heard the comment: "lets do this again" !!
Congratulations also to the 125's & 1 dayers - Well done.
From a 2 dayer perspective I think the route was spot on. I guess for variation you could reverse the direction but not sure how that would work for the 1 dayers.
I managed to dump the XF twice in the Challenge loop but it's obvious now I wasn't alone. In fact I think Serpentine Road should be re-named "Rut Road".
Thanks to Hobbit & HOT for support services.

A big thanks from myself and Jacko to Ryan and the team for such a great event!

Had a great day one, the highlight of which was the challenge loop - some serious 4WD ruts up near the church. A big thanks to the guys on the TTR600 and DR650 for helping out with Jacko's GS800. Bumped into Ruralman, near Lawrence and Shrek (I think) before the Serpentine Rd.

Unfortunately the 15 hours of mainly high speed caning resulted in me DNF'ing at Cromwell with a blown motor, so it's RIP XT600 or at least that particular engine. To add insult to injury, the rear wheel bearings shot themselves on Jacko's GS so we enjoyed a rental car ride back to Chch on Sunday and the bikes went on a truck - thanks to the AA!

I've posted some pics up to Picasa here:

Javahead and i had a great ride completing the loop in just under 16hrs :headbang: the only minor issue was Javahead's headlight failing wich required us to be home before dark which we just made.

A few questions regarding the other 1 day guy's. Who's the guy riding the BMW 650XC? we caught up to him at one point but stopped for a quick feed and never saw him again. and also what time did the guy on the 650? honda get in? we spoke to his dad when we arrived and got the impression that we should have met him allong the way?

Let the planning for next year begin:rolleyes:

The XC rider was davo20 I think. He helped Racing Dave out as he was a minute or so behind him when he crashed. The XR650R rider is a KB newby from Rangitata, or was it Raikaia - cant remember. I had a chat with him the next morning and I think I'm right in saying a 12pm arrival back at Fairlie (6pm ish start).

Difficult to know where to begin. Firstly the most obvious is huge appreciation to Ryan for the time and meticulous planning involved in this trip. It was great to once again put more faces to names and share good times with some awesome people. I've seen more of the SI back country in 2 days than in 10 yrs!. I'm already enjoying the photos comin up of the stunning scenery and the adventure crew. As this has only been my second trip off seal since getting the DR its been a fantastic learning curve! (I know for sure after 2 days on that seat there is no way my butt could take 24hrs of it!)

Wow!
What an awsome ride!

Congrats to Cooneyr and team you guys have done an awsome job and and I'm sure most don't appreciate just how much time and effort you have put in to making an awsome trip.
The scenery and tracks were great and at times we were laughing to each other cause we both had no idea where in NZ we were which makes it that much more fun.
Me and Josh (Yamaha ttr650) completed the 2 dayer sucessfully with no punctures and no real problems apart from a wee nose to tail.
It was great to meet a heap of like minded people and when the going gets tuff help appears.
I must say the 2 dayer is great socially as you get to meet and talk to alot more people but the 1 dayer is definatly the challenge for next year.
Also big ups to the north island guys who put the effort to come down.

P.S What happend R-Dave???

Well what can I say,.....the most memorable ride I have done since coming to NZ...I,d like to thank Ryan and friends for the organisation without which it would not have been possible ( sounds like the oscars) .

All the men who helped me through my baptism of fire thay call the Orari Gorge ( I think thats what its called....I called it hell on earth ). I sadly never grew up in NZ and did not have the luxury of having a playground like this in the UK or Holland. My skills are sadly lacking as I am relatively new to adventure riding and am still in awe of the fun a bloke can have on a trail ride.

I had a crowd of blokes help me along every inch of the way to Fairlie through the Gorge and gave me top advice and encouragement when needed and of course the good Kiwi piss take which comes with it. I learned so much in that one day that I put down to riding the whole Dusty Butt without once dropping the bike! Friends I take my hat off to you!

A special mention to cynna (col) for looking after me every time I went through a ford or a rough bit to make sure I made it through and for the tireless effort of helping me pick up my bike every time I dropped it ( also on the previous rides I have done with him)

I hope to be doing more rides and increasing my skill level as I go and meeting new people along the way like Helen and Debbie who gave great support and always a happy face. Also to all the guy,s like Matt ,Nigel ,Alan,John Chris ( oooh my cocktail dress) and Alfie for feathering the clutch ...and the lift...Ahem....( we will never speak of this again)....and to any one else I may have missed.

I hope to see and meet many of you again on future rides and look forward to exploring this amazing country I call home.....sniff sniff....ps my ankles are so painful from falling off and my tits hurt too......

Thanks for the commiserations - At least the XT went out with a bang! The engine is going to very expensive to fix and it's generally well thrashed, so I might go the way of the DR650 which seems to be very popular in NZ... I'll have a look at some of the threads to get an idea.

The GS800 bearings must be a lack of Vorspung durch technic on a Friday afternoon in Bavaria or something, as it's only a year old - hopefully a warranty job!

That was a ride to remember. Huge thanks to Ryan and the others that spent so many hours and days planning, checking, pre-riding etc. It was a treat to be able to just ride and leave the directions to someone else. A couple of times we thought we were lost but in the end we were just confused - we were usually in the correct place after all.

It felt like the right mix of fast and tight roads for a long day. I can only compare with last year's but I'd say this one had more rocky terrain, and less seal - none of which seemed overly long. Good to be able to finish with long straight gravel runs as the light was fading and the temperature was dropping.

It was my first time over all those routes, so my head is full of a mash of spectacular scenery and excellent riding tracks. I loved the rocky bits and the long downhills - just wish I could remember which bit was what. Guess that means coming back for more.

We were fortunate to do it in the dry. And thankfully good sense prevailed and we didn't choose 125s. It was a blast on the 530. topo's 640 didn't miss a beat and we travelled at the same pace with pretty much the same level of comfort.

Definitely a ride that was better shared. It made gates much easier when the one that opens it closes it, so that the other guy rides on thru to open & shut the next gate. We caught up with only three others and they were all riding alone. That would have been hard work. Having someone to push the pace along, and correct the occasional bad navigation choice made it easier.

Other than a posse of 4WDs on the Nevis (?) we hardly saw a soul off the seal. If you organised that Ryan - well done!

It was slightly surreal to find a guy on a near new postie bike, quite well dressed, trundling along up a hill in the middle of absolutely nowhere at a very sedate pace, grinning ear to ear. We ended up opening two gates for him. His pace was perfect - never needing to slow, never able to speed. I think we both felt inadequate being passed by him twice, so we tried much harder from then on.

Both topo and I used Michelin Deserts which had already been well run in (approx 1000 km of sand for each). We had them at 26-28 psi and rode at a pace that would preserve them as far as possible. They were great until around 800 km when it was hard to get enough traction into a headwind to keep accelerating. Next time I think starting with new ones will do it - assuming similar terrain. If it was wet we might not have found them quite as good.

Other than an errant headlight of mine, no problems for either of us. Sore hands and generally tired, but that's it. No crashes (OK I fell over twice getting off and on at gates, but if it doesn't hurt or break anything then its not a crash, right). Surprisingly the seat was comfortable right to the finish. I think the mix of terrain had a lot to do with it - never sitting for too long at a time.

No photos to share but a head full of great memories to keep.

Roll on DB 2011.
