Ok, I love my GSXR250.....

So later on I would like to get a 'Newer' bike. I like the fact the 250cc bikes are pretty economical and that factor kinda puts me off getting a 600 or bigger. 250 is plenty enough power for me as I do mainly city riding and for fun.

I like the shape of the newer bikes but the only 250 i have seen that looks modern is the Ninja, but have been told it has half the power of my GSXR and it would be a backward step for me (is this true?)

Love the look of the big bikes like the R1 and the GSXR1000 etc.... mainly for the modern styling and LED lights and cool 'bug eye' headlights etc. Digital gauges and all that 'mod' stuff my GSXR doesnt have....

You guys got any suggestions as to a bike I might like? Im a full fairing kinda guy so mainly sport bike styles.

Why dont they make more 'newer' 250s that still have power ie? GSXR250 or a YZF250?

Something like this....

Your needs as you describe them mean you will have to look at 600s and up.
The Ninja is probably the only 'modern' full faired 250. It's more than half the power, but still gutless by comparison.
I don't recommend you look at thous...totally wasted for your sort of riding. In fact, any sports-oriented bike is...

I have never heard anyone say they are hapy with the power of their 250cc bike. Good for you.

No need to upgrade and spend a shit load of cash until you are NOT happy with the power.

They DO still make "newer 250s that still have power ie yzf250". I believe there is a 2009 model... Yea my mate that rode a ninja 250 really complained about the lack of power so it probably would be a step from the gixxer 250. My guess as to why they stopped making them was because there isn't enough demand to justify spending so much money on making a high performance 250. I don't think there are any new bikes with LEDs, digital gauges and stuff like you want that actually have the performance the old IL4s. Actually, maybe newer aprilia rs250s have some of that stuff? They look nice, and I wouldn't be surprised if the had LED tail lights and digital gauges

Get a K7 GSX-R 1000. :done:

Lol.... in all seriousness, have you considered a GSX-R 600 or a Ninja ZX6R?

Do you have your full yet?

Im still on my learners so still have a way to go.... but want to start saving for the next baby now. yeah have considered a 600.... compared to my 250 (approx 17km/L) how are they on gas? I use to have a Nissan 300zx which I use to like to 'cruise' around in, but it became way too expensive to run, hence why I got a bike mainly as a commuter, a hobby and a bit of fun so dont want it to get too crazy with the gas.

I guess you could say a sports bike is a waste on me, but it depends on a few factors. I enjoy the style of them, and I enjoy that they 'look' fast etc but I am by no means interested in get my knee down or doing 170 round corners :)

Maybe a 600 would be a good next step? are they still fun to ride even in 50km zones (as most of my riding is) or would I end up hating it?

Thanks for all ur help!

Depends how you ride and if you're commuting etc.

I get about 14-15 km/L on my D600 when commuting. More on the open road.

You might end up paying another $10-20 a month on gas, but the power difference is well worth it

Guess im just worried is riding a 600 in the city like driving a Porsche at 50km/hr? i.e too much power for the speed limit and you sit in 2nd all day and the bike is laboured? I rock around with the 250 sitting at about 7000rpm at 50kpm and it still feels like the bike is 'enjoying' it. Would a 600 do the same thing or do you need to be going faster to keep the bike happy?

All the 600's do look nice.... Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawa etc... most of em cost more than my cage!

Suzuki GSX650F. Fully faired, Suzuki mechanicals, bulletproof Bandit based, great price. Straight out of the crate these are dangerously close to being the perfect motorcycle. A couple of thousand spent on suspenders and brakes would make these a frighteningly good package. Buy one.

Now you're getting the idea.

But if you can be satisfied with only two bike types..............

Learn to master your bike, I think you'll find you can go way faster than you think you can. I keep surprising myself with my hyosung and that's by no means fast.

It's nor a speed thing but every car I have ever owned has been over 10 years old. The fact that I could possibly own a bike made say in 2007/8 is exciting. I just like the look of them even tho right now a 250 is enough for me to ride for some time. But I do see newer bikes go by and they do look good....

Well once you have your full start taking some test rides etc.

See what you like and if you want to/can, take the next step up :)

The era of high performance 4 stroke 250cc bikes started to die in about 1994 when Japan made new laws regarding limiting the power output of 250s. The laws got stricter as time went by and no new 250cc road bike will be anywhere near as quick as what you have now. If your bike is reliable then keep it, any other 4 stroke 250 will be a downgrade that you WILL live to regret, I guarantee it. If you must go fast on a 250 AND have large wads of cash to spare then look into a 2 stroke.

How many kms have you done?? The question really is, do you know enough about your riding to make a decision now? Probably not... Including the comment about not needing more power. It's quite possible that you improve over then next 6 months and then want a faster bike...

Having said all this, a 600 or 650 twin, like the SV, or Cagiva Raptor (like I have), is hard to ignore for your 1st "big bike" You'll find the power much more accessible and less busy in town.

I went from a 250 bandit to an RF900, then the Cagiva 'coz that's much better for commuting... and the zx10r for the fun days!! :)

I ride a Hyo GT250R and live in Taupo. The other day, on my morning commute to work, I hit a patch of black ice going round a roundabout, and my rear wheel went for a bit of a slide going round the corner. I was able to correct it and keep myself upright, but that was one of the times I was glad I was only on a 250cc. Having a 250 is the best time to learn skills like that which will help you translate over to a bigger bike once you get one.

One thing to bear in mind is that for the most part, 250cc bikes are far more forgiving than bigger bikes. I rode a K7 GSX-R 1000 the other day, and I'm glad I spent so long on the 250 so I was able to get my confidence and skill level up as much as what I have, otherwise that beast would have chewed me up and spat me out in a heartbeat.

Just something to keep in mind... don't be in too much of a rush to get off your 250 as it's a valuable learning time for you.
