Hi Girls and Boys!
I'm training for the Auckland 1/2 at the moment but have recently encountered the obstacle of darkness. I'm not too enthralled by the idea of running alone at night. There are some fraking weirdos out there!
So if you're:
1. a runner
2. live in East Auckland
3 needing a running buddy
4. and most importantly, not a weirdo.
let me know.

Yeah, I also know someone who did the recruit course last year. He said it wasn't that bad. But better to be prepared than to go in there being a lazy slob.
Seems you got good number of volunteers. Just do a group run. They can be your personal bodyguards. Cool!

Haha sounds like a plan!
Well I typically don't get home until 5.30, so a 6/6.30pm run would be ideal for me. I live in Howick fairly close to O'hagans- nothing stopping us from going for a beer afterwards to undo all the good! ;)

Done a half before?
What time are you targeting?
The Auckland half course is deceptively slow and undulating. If you want to improve on your PB (and you undoubtedly will), do the Kerikeri half three weeks later. You'll be in better condition and it's a fast course.
And beer is terrible post-training nutrition. But you knew that already.
Also, when you say 'not a weirdo', one presumes that that's girl-code for 'don't expect to get a shag out of this'.

Dont tell me there are people out there who actually keep fit!!?

Is running during your lunch hour an option? You'll find it much easier on the lungs than breathing traffic polluted colder winter air.

The last half I ran, I did in 2 hours flat. I'd like a repeat, but I haven't been training much recently so that's unlikely.
I'm not too concerned as to whether or not the boys are under false pretence Jr. They wouldn't have enough stamina for said act after a run with me anyway. ;)

That's a good idea Dave and I agree re pollution etc. Unfortunately I like a good hour each run and there just isn't enough time to eat and have a shower before my next patient comes in.

Ah, but it's still not bad advice.
For what it's worth, the last half I did was in 2005. 2:09 @ 95kg.
Might have a crack at the Auckland one again this year if I can scrape together the cash for a pair of new running shoes before then.

Particularly amused at r6_kid - do we get to hold hands, and the other one...they shouldn't be expecting a shag afterwards? Heh. Running = increased metabolism = you can get away with eating a lot of junk. A 21km run is equivalent to about 1,500 calories. I burned about 33,000 calories training for the wellington half.... me thinks me needs chocolate, icecream and custard tarts for dinner

Tell me about it. When I was in the Senior Eight (rowing) at school we were training up to 30hrs a week. I could eat as much as I wanted and almost put on no weight at all.
Then I stopped rowing, and kept eating. Took me just under 9 months to go from 85kg up to 102kg. Lost the abs and the fitness, but kept the stamina

Age is a bit of a killer when it comes to metabolism. I used to be 70kgs in my early twenties, now I can't get below 77kgs. Still not bad (I'm fitter and stronger than I used to be). Thought about entering Mr Puniverse when I was younger :wari:
A guy at work just did the marathon in 3:03. The winner did it in 2:36 and 10 minutes clear of second. Makes my effort look a little paltry by comparison.
For a good laugh and some inspiration - get a copy of Dean Karnazes book "Ultra marathon man".
