View Full Version : For those of you who have not seen a Hamilton fog before

Hamilton lies in the middle of a large basin mostly surrounded by mountains and has a river running through the middle of it. This makes it a prime candidate for what the English called 'Pea Soupers'.
This morning was an excellent example of this so I snapped some piccy's for your viewing pleasure.
My 20km ride to work was so cold I had to stop halfway to warm the hands up, and could only do 50km/h on the open road as the visor was freezing up and it was too cold to go any faster with it open.
The first 4 photo's on the way into town, the last 2 from the 6th floor on the building I'm in, at about midday when the worst of it had burnt off.

On a proper waikato foggy day the fog lifts at 2.00 pm then comes back down at 3.00 pm. Ahh good times .. good times

I love it! It gives the area a mistique. Then again, I have the luxury of not living in Hamilton but within a 30min ride.

you call that fog mate lol
thats clear open road.
come down here and ride SH1 between Ambeley and Cheviot when there is a fog.
you are lucky to see more then three white lines in front of you in the day time,
Whilst at night if you can do more than 10kph your a fucking idiot!
I am very sure there are plenty of riders who have hit this fog bank when traveling the coast road from picton to ChCh.
Then there is the Summit Road above ChCh, you walk it when it gets foggy up there, you would have problems riding a push bike , that would be too fast.

Cool pics! My Sis just moved to Hamilton from Northland. She has lived there for less than a week and I think she may be suffering from culture shock. Or maybe that should be cold shock

Actually, the comments about Christchurch fogs are true.
It doesn't happen very often (twice in the 10 years that I lived there) but I can recall being stopped in the middle of a suburban intersection, about 5 blocks from home. I couldn't see any of the exits and the only way I knew it was an intersection was that I could JUST make out the glow of the 4 street lights on the corners.
We got home at walking pace by holding the driver's door open and following the centreline.

Sorry guys having ridden regularly in all the above mentioned places the Ykato easily takes out the award for thickest fog.
Maori legend has it that all of the fog in NZ spews out of the ground somewhere near Taupiri and I,for one, sure wouldn't argue with them!

An hour of sunshine? Luxury!
I grew up in Reporoa, the fog would stay down for weeks on end! Later I lived up on a hill on the side of the valley, it was great sitting out in the sunshine looking down on the sea of fog thinking of all the poor buggers down in the grey murk.

Lived on the Raglan side of the Deviation for 9 years & commuted to work in Hamilton each day. :sunny: Sun would be shinning when i left home, then coming down the Hamilton side of the deviation you could see the thick blanket of fog covering the whole Hamilton - Ngaruawahia -Cambridge - Morrinsville area with 1 tall tree and 1 power pylon sticking out the top as you drove into it and were lost for hours :blank:

The second photo is a lovely view of Mt Te Aroha from my house....see the tower there?....Nope!
It is 972m high and looks great at this time of the morning...:sunny:
It isn't cold and it has just rolled in as it does on some winters mornings.....
This one has the fell like it might disappear at around 3 or 4 this afternoon...!
:done: This is proof that we do have some thick ones here.....Not referring to riders, weather of course....:shit:

It's foggy in Auckland this morning. And when I say morning I actually mean it's just lifting now in the middle of the afternoon! Most unusually damp and misty. eeewww.

I remember working at Reporoa years ago, Fog all the way down there from Rotorua, fog lifted about midday but came back down about 2 hours later, in that time, we manage to spot the 'Woolshed'.....:apint:
