I'm finally back in NZ, but I'm full of the flu. I'm pretty sure I'll be good to go next weekend.

I'm pretty gunked up too. Want to ride both days sort of but probably should take it easy. So MX Saturday or Sandpit Sunday/Saturday? Can't choose :(

Looks like fun - what is it likely to be like if it is hosing down?

Good question, I heard it was sandy last year & I'm hoping the hosing down waits until Monday morning :).

Yeah that's what I thought too, "sounds like the sandpit".
Weather wise, not much in it.

Yeah, think the sandpit sounds better at this stage. I wanna do some of the tracks we haven't done yet :sunny: Feeling courageous...Or masochistic :shit:

trail of doom? sh16a? big dipper?

Yup, the ones with the scary names  Depends how wet it is tho. So if you fail at the big dipper is there room at the bottom to get a run up and try again? Or just slink off sadly out one of the other exits?

theres a home bit at the bottom of the big dipper if you cant get up it...

Pffft the reds aren't bad. Just do it and the worst case is it will take you a while to get out. the trick to the dipper is pin it in second and don't back off!! Momentum is the key here.

Just watch those dam tree roots in teh wet!!

Yeah you can definitely have more than one go at the Big Dipper, just have to pull the bike down and start again. I didn't slink, I just left it for some other poor bastard to get up the hill for me! It's not as scary as I thought. Big downhill before it, big downhill after it, not too bad. Noobi said rain would make it better! You'll hose up Spike Punch!!!

(Apols for off topic-ness) Hey spikedpunch, Confidence is a huge part of riding, need to really visualise getting up or over an obstacle as you approach it. Ignore the subconcious, which often is like spoiler tape message playing in background of mind - 'this is hard,' 'not going to make it' etc. Makeshift confidence is actually a pretty good substitute for the real thing.

For big dipper, need to get onto it hard and fast. I don't have a lot of horespower on tap so I like 4th gear and if needed, a quick tap down to 3rd about 10m from top. Extra pace gives much more stability in the deep sand, just need quick reflexes to correct the bike the moment it goes off line. Plenty of throttle, usually tapped. Look well ahead for best balance and the top of hill (your goal) will draw you to it like a magnet.

In other words give it heaps. The more you think about it the greater the likleyhood that you will fail.

Momentum is king

Gutted, didn't make it up! Oh well, gave it a few goes, my second try was the best, almost made it, but not quite. Bummerrrrrr!
Still, always good to have a new goal :sunny:
It was really really reallyreally wet. Found that fence you guys were talking about, almost had a head on, woops. Was really good fun in the normally loose stuff, was sooo packed down, was absolutely blatting along, boucing off all the woops and getting a wee bit sideways in the corners :ride:
My bike was playing up a bit today after the super bowl, I thought it might have been the clutch at first, not so sure because it's still stalling fine and everything. It was hard to shift at first, and then it seemed to be revving really high in all the gears, didn't seem to be giving much of a hit? Weird anyway. And then the throttle got stuck wide open and I almost nailed krad :shit: I could get along alright but it felt really off is all? I swear I'm not making it up as an excuse for not getting up the BD :bleh:

it could be the throttle cable getting stuck on something if its revving my itself and getting stuck. take it off check for fraying or kinks, maybe some crc down it then some oil. mine was acting up like that and it needed replacing, after i rode off a 2m ledge into a gorse bush tho..., but it had a tear in it and it was routed wrong, so it was getting pulled when i turned full left or right.

That rates as one of our best days riding... :Punk:

Really enjoyed being able to hoon round all the yellow and green trails that are usually a bit soft and whooped out. Not today though, they were so much fun, even started taking a few whoops two at a time :devil2: and the corners had smooth berms just begging to be railed... (some day I'll do just that...)The MX track was superb (if you like sand.....) and the puddles were to die for... (by drowning... :shit: ) Best memory of the day was following Sophie through a huge puddle, she completely disappeared from sight, emerging out the other end in a cloud of steam, still head down, arse up, going like stink... Sooo cool....

Of course not a day for cameras, but I like this shot of a young lad parked near us, waiting for his dad to bring the bike they were sharing back...

It was VERY wet.............

It was a real good ride in the end, we changed plans in the rain & headed for sand vs mud ( I was outvoted ), got there late about midday due to leaving late & navigational issues, MC didn't know where we were going, even if he thought he did, so did a round trip from Managawhai to Kaiwaka :) ( the lack of signage didn't really help, but I still blame MC ).
We managed to get three laps in, the first lap I was gapping everyone & enjoying being able to throw the bike around, then I slowed down to let the others catch up ( major mistake ) & started floundering in the sand like a fish flopping out of water, the track was about 1/2 soft sand ( beach sand basically ), with a heap of whoops, not unlike the old woodhill and some fantastic flowing track in the trees ( not real tight, never dropped to 1st ).
So the last 2/3 of the 1st lap & 2nd lap I was trying to work out what the heck I was doing wrong, pretty obvious in the end, I was not gripping hard enough with my knees & way to gentle/late on the power in the corners & just because I can throw a 250 around, it still chews energy, so was trying big time in the last 1/2 to get into enduro mode of riding smooth & conserving energy, had a few offs & need a new clutch lever, though the only time I got scared was a awesome sweeping corner, bermed nicely, on the limiter coming out in 3rd into a jump & was like how bad can the landing be, well umm it was a gully & just landed before the up face, it was a "this could really hurt" moment.
It was a good ride & still learning the 250, but dang you can throw it around, when you get a flow going it's just a heap of fun, learning big time that there is usually only one gear to be in :), but really starting to get a feel for the motor now.

I'm just stubborn :innocent: Hope you have a blast :D
I reckon BD's totally doable on the little bike, you'd just have to really give it welly while not squirreling out or sinking, easier said than done tho maybe :p
