It's been a while. A long while, but as ya'll know once bikes are in your blood they just can't be let. Suppressed but not cured. Spent a few years on the dirt side of riding life which I still enjoy occasionally. However I'm keen to blow cash I don't have on a beautiful 'land of garage' road bike. I say land of garage 'cos I have now fully carpeted my garage with heaters and TV, a truly great place to socialise and be with ya toys i.e. MY room :Punk:
The days of trying to disprove lightspeed physics have gone as I just know how many moments I'd last with something like an R1 :devil2: . The throb of much torque appeals more. Looking at Harleys as such - well yes they do look great, but I just can't get my head around them. The el-cheapo deals at the moment on Suzuki Boulevards are very tempting as a weekend play cruiser.
However looking at the massive engine of the Yamaha MT-01 (I felt the vibe from one at idle a while back) just does something way down inside. Anyone else got experience with the MT-01? What about other suggestions for a forty something year old, self confessed bike addict that's been in denial for too long?

There are threads on here discussing various types of v-twins. It's a preferred configuration for many of us. The good news is there is plenty of choice.
The best advice is to ride a few. A bike which gleams and beckons might prove uncomfortable, underpowered, or just......wrong.
You need to decide whether you want a cruiser or sports orientated. In amongst that are adventure bikes which I view as cruisers :devil2: and street bikes. Lots of fun kicking tyres ahead of you.

I Agree i think Adventure bikes are bought as "cruisers".They make very comfotable and capable road bikes, and i think THAT is why so many are sold and they never see the far side of a gravel road.

MT01 Comfy to ride, typical low redline for a large capacity Vtwin. Plently of tourqe, could do with a bit more ground clearance if memory serves me right (been a year or two scince I rode it) but not to bad.
Overall a good bike, wasnt personally my cup of tea, as I prefer somthing that revs a litle bit more

Cheers thanks, some food for thought there alright. Interesting..
I've literally bumped into (very gently with my knee) a nicely displayed Triumph Bonneville American. I was never really into the old school Triumphs, Nortons, BSAs and all that, they've never caught my eye. However this bike seemed...nice enough. Not outrageous in any hp or torque dept, couldn't see me ever trying to see how fast I could ride it, more for the basic enjoyment factor maybe. I know V Twins have a great vibe and sound - what about a side by side? Seems kind of a relaxed and cheaper way of getting onto a ride (aka low key, less drama from non riders, the Ex etc), hmm not sure..

One thing which happens for many people: Whatever bike you pick will seem powerful enough and just right......for about 6 months. By then the initial thrill will have muted into simple pleasure and chances are you'll start to glance sideways at other bikes, just wondering.......
So you could look at this as a 1 2 3 process over a few years which will help your decision making. There are no bad choices - modern motorcycles are all pretty damned good.
FWIW I'm very happy with my Duc. In fact I'm slightly puzzled that I don't really lust after any other bike. Sure, there are newer, faster, slicker Ducs, Aprilas, SuperDukes, MV Agusta yadda yadda but....I don't care.
Have fun looking and riding.

You should also have a look at the new Triumph Thunderbird which arrives in NZ in August. Could be exactly what you want.

There have been some good deals on the MT. They were pretty expensive when released.
Sound superb with pipes. :Punk:

..hopefully coming close to shelling out some coin, the wrench of my house rebuild should only be a temporary stay of expenditure :sweatdrop:
Had a nose at an MT-01 today, no time for a ride but what a great sounding rumble.
Yeah AllanB the standard pipes are a bit over the top for me, smaller, less baffling and to look less like an Amesterdam spliff would be good. I assumed the engine is a female 'cos it sure was a turn on.
So went for a quick ride on the 86 VFR 750 I have in the garage (not mine it's a friends bike, it's for sale) out the back roads to Wellsford way. Great weather and a good way to clear the cobwebs. Home before the Friday freak-drive.
Better buy a Lotto ticket tomorrow..
The new black and gold R1 is wicked eye-candy but.....

Well, well, well aint it funny how a week or two can alter a course of thought. Yep I still want an MT-01, but in the meantime until I can pay for a brand spanking new one.......
just bought an R1
Always lusted after the R's ever since my first visual drool years ago. O.K. so it's not the 2009, but an '02. Getting it trucked up from way down south this coming week. Helmet and gear just about all finalised (after too many dirt bike soil samples over the years, I've learned the benefit of wearing the best protection you can get, expensive, no...cheap).
Not exactly a calm reintroduction to road bikes after a couple of decades off, but hopefully my brain has matured like a block of cheese. Gently does it for a wee while. Mind you haven't even seen the bike in the flesh yet. But already the spot in my Toy room has been sorted, nice soft carpet, alongside the YZ and TTR, aint that right lovely :grouphug:
..now even before the bike is in my sweaty hands, time to search online for colourful bangles baubles and beads to make her mine.
Time for a celebratory  , cheers!

Sounds like it might take nearly two weeks to get here from south island  I want it :mega: NOW. How am I supposed to get a good nights sleep for the next two weeks, I now remember what the addiction was all about :Punk:
"Excellent" (Bill & Ted)
I'm a definite Yamaha fan and have been for many years, even my 'toy room' a.k.a carpeted garage (cages are not allowed in :nono: ) has a big Yamaha sign or two by the YZ's (oh and the 4 phase security system, chains, alarm, 12 gauge streetsweeper :ar15: , and ...well if those three don't work the last one sure will, ;) ). Blah blah, my question is about the leathers.....
Matching genuine (blue/white) Yamaha leathers, or something like Alpinestars or Rev-it?
Helmet is Arai Chaser in blue (Pedrosa?)
Boots...the Alpinestars Stella S-MX 5 seemed to fit nicely..
What, what,...what ???

Matching genuine (blue/white) Yamaha leathers,
Nothing screams homosexual like matching leathers - unless your bike happens to be black.

Aw sheez, I've a black Honda and I have matching black leathers. I do have a red/black/silver helmet though!
I always thought that itchy feeling in the bum was hemorrhoids, but are you telling me it's like an anus boner?
Please share your experience in these matters - I'm now worried.
