KTM Supermoto T

Hi There,

I dont acually know where this bike sits on this forum, but KTM say its a "Travel/Long Distance Supermoto", which kind of puts in the Touring category?

Anyway... i have been looking for a bike of this style for me and the misses for two up touring. I guess the Triumph Tiger is similar?

The issue is is that there are only 10 of these in NZ at the moment and you cant test ride one for love or money!

Has anyone managed to acually ride one of these? If so, can they share their thoughts ta?

Ive taken the Superduke R for a good buz and that was amazing! Concidering this bike shares many similar things (such as that V cool v-Twin), I would expect it to be fun to ride as well...

I didnt realise that they where here, yes aimed at touring however I note MCN regard it as the most versitile bike on the market ie a trackday weapon to long distance tourer.
Frankly bro, throw caution to the wind and buy the freckin thing I doubt you will regret it mate !

Yep - got to take a look at one at the KTM dealer in Hamiton. The guy there said there are only 10 in NZ with more coming in Oct this year... which is about when i want to buy a bike like this. Its 23k plus accessories so its rather pricy, but i think you are right. Tally ho!

Read a couple of reviews, sound like a really good bike, yes they are very much in the same vein as the Triumph Tiger 1050 but I believe things like the suspension, wheels and brakes to be of a higher standard supposedly. Good all round bike for NZ roads IMHO as is the Tiger 1050. I have to say though the KTM does appeal to me a little more though.
AFC Motorcycles have one in stock (as of last weekend) and they said they probably would'nt be "demo"ing it at this stage but as you say if it's anything like the SuperDuke it would be a riot to ride.
I think it would be an ideal bike if you're considering some off the beaten paths such as the odd metal road and the like, otherwise strictly speaking there would be better touring options.

Yes i could agree with you about the better touring options.... but as you say, if its anything like the Superduke R to actually ride, then you just could not go past it. Heh.. mind the pun.

Horses for courses I reckon dude, keeping on the tarseal and reasonably close to civilization then I, myself personally would widen my search particularly if you are going to be two up most of the time. But if "I" was looking for a bike for me alone to be riding then I really would fancy a ride on this bike.
A bunch of us went for a tour up the island at the beginning of they year and believe me I was particularly impressed by my ZX14 in it's role as a sports tourer, there are a lot of bikes out there that can slip into that role quite easily. Check out the Yamaha FZ1 Fazer too dude, not quiet the fun bike to ride at slow speeds as the SuperDuke is but fun to ride all the same.
If you do end up with one of the KTM SMT's let us know what you think of it via a review here on KB, would be interested to hear.
EDIT: Oh and by the way, ditch the Conti RoadAttack's in favor of Michelin Road 2's, far superior tyre IMHO.

Wait... KTM put RoadAttacks on? :crazy: The Pirelli Scorpion Syncs, while expensive, are the best tyre I have ever ridden on!

Yesh, I has a 990SM. Apart from exhaust shrouds, suspension settings (and travel), front fairing, etc, the bikes are identical. Best bike I have ever owned :banana:

I'm obviously biased, but I've custom fitted some givi pannier racks etc, and I reckon its better than the SMT, being more capable of gravel roads etc having the longer travel suspension.

Other than that, probably check space for a pillion. While physically a very large bike, I did shift the top box mounting as far forward as possible, meaning pillions have to be on the small side for sure (not so bad coz I'm single :lol:) and this space is even worse if I'm pulling wheelies.

A hooligan toy that you can still travel serious distances on. Done a SI tour (6300km in 13 days), Grand Challenge (1600km in < 24 hours) and so on. 8 months later I have done 22,000km.

The SM definitely isn't smooth like an inline, but ride it how its meant to be ridden, and she comes alive. Messing with mapping, pipes, and I haven't got it economical yet. Wheelies don't ruin fuel consumption do they? :rolleyes:

Yeah I was looking lustfully at the SM-T. Apparently KTM say that the "T" stands for travel rather than touring but...

I was a bit concerned about the seat height, but I seem to have scratched my V Twin itch for now :ride:

Think Superior in Chch had 2 of these - dont know about long distance for a pillion thogh -my partner reckons the back of my superduke is bloody uncomfortable and these don't look too different

I'd say just do it, checked it out myself, I'm onto my second Super Duke (70,000 k's combined) & still lovin it. If I wasn't 12wks into the arrival of my 1st child I'd be there with bells on. They just make soo much sense for NZ roads :whistle:
