View Full Version : Nascar: I don't get it.

Just watching Nascar on TV. I don't get it. They just go around and around only making left hand corners, never braking, running at maximum revs without even changing speed, on a perfect track.
I'm sure there must be some driver skill involved. But it just seems to be a race of who has the fastest top speed.
Boring.

Yes, me too. It seems pretty pointless after a short time. Nevertheless NASCAR has a huge public following in the USa so there must be something fascinating about it.
Not my cup of tea.

I think you are failing to appreciate how fast they are actually going and how huge and how often they crash.
And the commentary is as good a slapstick as can be made - not on purpose.

same with ps2, after 10 mins stared going the other way and crashing into the other cars, then that got boring quick too. think they have to much money. ha ha. would give it a go if had the chance. i use to pit crew for a super saloon, thats about the same.

You can't see them sliding, but they are on the limit all the time.Try balancing a car on the edge of traction at 180mph (whatever they do) with another car almost touching....and see if it's a little thrilling or not.I admit it's not visually exciting, and don't know why the big crowds, but from a drivers point of view I think it takes big balls.
My brother used to go to Charlotte every year,as his Bro in law was a team mechanic - he got a pit pass and could spend the whole weekend there. He became a NASCAR fan overnight - to be there and see it,to be in the pits and see it all happen, all the American hype flag waving....just over powering.
The recession has seen his Bro in law layed off as they downsized,so no more NASCAR.

Yeah I see them riiiiiiiiiiiiiite on the edge of traction, but do they use meatballs for tires or something? 180mph aint that quick.

PS2 takes away the risk factor.
All the cars in NACAR are built to a formula as you well know.
Those circular tracks are not smooth or as round as you may think.
PS 2 does not allow for the many things that happen in real life racing.
A touch by another car at 180mph+ on PS2 does nothing,
In real life it can spell disaster.
PS2 engines dont wear out, of drop pistons, or blow cluthes
Real life has so many improbable events that can and do happen which makes the racing a challenge.
Have you ever driven a car around a corner at 180mph+ with a car on each side of you only inches apart, then one eith the same distance in front of you or behind?
Not a skill?
PS2 may be an electronics engineers idea of what it is like, but not really that close to reality.
Pluss it is not only the driver that is being teated to the max, its also the chassis builderm the engine builder, the suspension set up, so many variables that only skilled people ever succeed.
Race 500 mile down a sratight road at full speed, see how far you get.
No skill you say? then you have never driven or riden fast enough to know how much skill is needed.

Did you know: That the right hand tyres are larger than the left hand tyres? Simply because of the going around in one direction all the time.

NASCAR is pretty intense, doing 200MPH constantly and so close to one another etc.
Granted it can be a bit like "wow, they're going in a oval", but when you think about it, isn't most racing going around in a loop for a few laps?

I 'get it'. And they do brake, accelrate, change speed as well so you're a little uninformed. With HP so close, it has to come down to driver skill and set up.
I quite enjoy a bit of Nascar on a rainy day. I find it very relaxing.
I also think maintaining that level of concentration for that long is pretty impressive.
My nana thinks bike racing is boring cause they just go round and round the track. Go nana's of the world eh lol

Credit to them.
Some of the drivers are in their 40s and fat and not the stereotype driver 'athletes'.
And to get those tanks which I think are over 3000lbs over 200mph with old tech, as in pushrod V8s with carb, yes carb, restrictors is very impressive.

I don't mind NASCAR, there's a lot more to it than you think. Sure they turn left all the time but it's just about always in a controlled drift at some crazy speed. Marcus Ambrose hasn't exactly set the world on fire since going over so it's obviously not easy.
Being trackside would be somethin' else I reckon. Huge packs of cars hammering past at maximum revs would be fuggin' impressive, like turn 1 in a V8 Supercar race repeated at every turn. The tech side is pretty interesting. On the face of it the machines are throwbacks to mechanical dark ages but they are developed to the Nth degree. Deliberately inducing valve float to get around maximum lift limitations on camshafts is no mean feat when your engine has to last 100's of miles at redline.
If you don't like NASCAR you have obviously got the volume too low....ya gotta play it LOUD!

Friends of mine (mum dad and 2 kids) went to the USA for a motor racing holiday a couple of years ago - went to IRL, NASCAR and NHRA. This family have an apartment in Surfers and go there for the IRL/V8s every year, so they know what motor racing is all about.
Mum's order of 'exciting racing' - 1 = NHRA, 2 = NASCAR, 3 = IRL. 100000 people at the NHRA in Vegas, 130000 at NASCAR.......
It's all big, brash and loud. Pretty much like America really.

The fastest recorded speed is 212.809mph set by Bill Elliot at Talladega in 1987, I think since the restrictor plates came as a result of a 200+ mph crash by Bobby Allison the top speeds on the superspeedway are now around the 190- 200mph mark
some of the short tracks they're only around the 100-120mph mark

the difference between football and rugby is that in rugby.. most times the distance run with the ball is 5 yards before it is passed backwards.. players on either side do not have much room to accelerate to full speed..
in football.. it is passed forwards and the big 340 pound padded up linesmen have enough room to reach a decent speed before contact
ever been hit by a cement mixer?.. try that without padding ( i played uni football for a number of years.. trust me .. the hits are WAY bigger)

It's appealing on TV because death is always close... if you're on the wrong part of the track, you can easily get sucked into a wall at 180mph and spend the next 20 seconds tumbling and flipping down the straight, all the while other cars are trying not to ream you.
It's appealing at the track because the Yanks know how to entertain, if NZ motorcycle racing could do half as well...

There is plenty of opportunity for full speed collision in the Rugby Codes.
The bigger difference is because the player has to be 'held' after the collision - rather than just contact the ground.
Ironic the rest of the padding is to protect them from the Helmets too.

The guys can drive bloody well in nascar.
About 20yrs ago the speedway fraternity arranged for a few yanks to come over driving sprintcars, one such young guy was 16yr old Jeff Gordon who was pretty much near the top in speedway, but wanted to drive nascar and saw speedway sprintcars as the way to this, also figured if he could operate a 700hp car on dirt sideways would help on tarmac, how bloody right he was.
Can remember being at Stratford speedway after a meeting he was at,he left the guys for dead skill wise, and in the clubrooms was a great guy to talk to,very approachable and down to earth, not big headed at all,his attitude may have changed now but the talk we had about stockcars and hitting on dirt,he thought the guys were nuts he couldn't work out why hit guys at speed(they did then)in 1400kg cars at 90km into corners.
Similar to us kiwis into V8 supercars, once you've endured a weekend at Bathurst, you understand the hype the yanks get off on the atmosphere, the tingle going up your spine as you stand on top of the mountain when the balloons go,the cars take off, then suddenly you hear the noise, then the cars fly over the top is majic.
