View Full Version : Nelson Bays: Shed night

...a motorcycle support group...

It's simple, really. We all congregate at someone's shed, fiddle with bikes, down some bevvies, and talk shite. Not just a social night, but a chance to get some help with skills or equipment to maintain your bike.

For new riders, it's a great opportunity to learn from the more experienced.

If you have any specific jobs you would like assistance with, post here and ppl can offer to help. Ditto if you need some extra tools to get something done.

Dates and sheds to be arranged herein.

All care and no responsibility!

Right, first one: Calendar event here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2065&day=2009-7-2&c=1)

Where: Warewolf's shed (PM for address)
When: Thursday 2nd July, 7:00pm onwards

So far we have the following jobs to do:

<del>Check the valve clearances on Padmei's KLR650 (shim over bucket... fun), plus tap a new footpeg bolt hole.</del><br>Padmei can't make it now.
Get Willdat?'s newly acquired DR250 running, and possibly Warewolf's similar.
Check/set the sag on Warewolf's 640A.
CrazyFrog will change a tyre on his bike, timed to set the benchmark. :Punk:
No doubt there'll be more, I've always got a long list of jobs to be done.

I have a motorcycle trailer which ppl can borrow if necessary, but Willdat? has first dibs this time.

I'll put the kettle on...

Can I be so bold as to profer a suggestion for the tyre changing?

It must be done with the tools you usually carry on your bike with you.

Thats all.

Will have to do the tyre change another time because if i take me wheel off the bike will fall off the stand and then when I go to buy another broken part I will have to lie about how I did it.

I'll bring the DR and valve adjustment kit.

And 15mm ring spanner.
Seems Warewolf has a 15mm ring that needs adjusting...

warewolf
3rd July 2009, 08:35
Well I'd call that a success, despite Willdat's bike refusing to do much apart from backfire in an enclosed space, thereby making us all deaf.

Thanks Nordie but Woodman beat you to it and adjusted it. He also offered the useful advice of loosening it before tightening it again.

ZK-Awesome's GB250 has the RFVC head with screw and locknut adjusters. The screws have the small square top like a DR. They were all 0.05+mm so can stay that way until we get a) the correct spec and b) the chance to do them with the bike fully cold. At least we know what we are faced with now.

Bring on the next one!

Dodgy stator maybe?
'Bout the only electrical bit we didn't get to.

Had the same problem on the DRZ, but on mine the problem was a burnt out coil on the stator. The simptoms of this is weak spark, which makes it n bugger to start and idle in the cold. you can test this by taking out your sparkplug and holding it close to the cylinder head. you should be able to get a spark of about 10mm if all is still good.

Now the bike is at the shop being made reliable (Morleys this time, as far as I could get the bike under its own steam)...possible top end rebuild. A guy Richard is working on it, he's currently working on a 1979 DR370 VMX bike so I figured he was qualified enough. Suspension set up woul be great to play with, I'll definitely be there, bike or no bike.

With 5mm less preload on the front, it is noticeably more supple so probably a good thing. Will be interesting to test again at Waimea.

The numbers show that the springs are definitely too soft but some of the harshness should be gone.

Hey! I just found the owner's manual for my CBX250  I was fairly sure I'd made a copy.

You are welcome to have a look and/or copy. Valve clearances are IN: 0.05mm and EX: 0.08mm, cold. Use the "T" mark on the generator rotor. Doesn't list fork oil height, but IIRC when I bought fork oil, the shop had a book from the oil ppl listing the number.

Morleys just rang me...new piston, new rings, oversize rebore, new valves, new valve seats, new gudgeon pin and the bike still has the same problem it had when I took it in there, 7 weeks ago :argue:

Dieing as soon as the throttle is opened up, he reckons new CDI. I think I'll probably just pick it up and take it home, rewire the bike, and pick up a second hand CDI when I find one?

NordieBoy
27th August 2009, 16:13
With all that done it should go quite nicely once it's running.

Borrow Warewolf's CDI and take it around to them to test in the bike...

Warewolf's CDI, same problem...bugger.

Willdat?
29th August 2009, 12:23
I think I'm going to pay the bill, bring it home and rewire it slowly, carefully and neatly.

Unless anyone has any other ideas why it will run with the choke on when cold (not perfectly, but enough to get you 500m down the road or so). Once the choke is off and warm it will start fine, but die as soon as the throttle is opened up. That and check that the stator is all good...

NordieBoy
29th August 2009, 15:26
That to me feels carbish.

Does it rev ok with the choke on?

JATZ
29th August 2009, 17:16
That to me feels carbish.

Does it rev ok with the choke on?

I'm thinking it's fuel issues too, might be worth trying werewolfs carb aswell

warewolf
30th August 2009, 14:31
Yep, sounds to me like a carb issue. Some thoughts:

If you had a weak spark, it would run better at idle when warm than cold, as it takes a stronger spark to ignite the cold rich mixture. Weak spark is the only (electrical) reason it would misfire when revved, as more revs requires better spark. That's assuming the CDI takes care of advance, which in this case it does.

There's a few places you could try for more info; thumpertalk.com, dsn_dr or similar DR-specific list, or even advrider.com (thumpers or a tech forum). There's some pretty clued-up ppl on those, in amongst all the noise.

Willdat?
31st August 2009, 08:20

It does when cold (with a little coughing and spluttering to expected from a cold bike being revved out with the choke on). But once warm it won't rev even with the choke.

Mine did that the other day after raising the needle. it was the diaphragm not seated proper when I put the top back on the carb. Possible vacuum issues??

Talked to Morleys, they pulled the side off the engine, its farked. Apparently the big end bearing has collapsed. And just as warm weather was rolling around!

So now I have to put in a transplant engine if it's economical, or scrap the bike. Has anyone been through this before? I'm determined not to follow the path of a certain DR250 owner...

Any idea how much I'd get for the bike if I were to sell it as is...?

Fit stronger fork springs, included as part of fork oil change
swap EXC front end on to the 640
Fit knobbly tyre to the 950S
Check/set sag
... anything else??

We will be doing a short ride on Saturday which may take some time - fiddling with suspension setup. Probably find a 5-10minute loop in Sharlands that has a bit of everything, to test the suspension. Ride, change, ride, change, repeat.

We could have races to see who can pump the 950S rear tyre (140/80-18 or 120/100-18) up to 30psi with a MTB pump the fastest. Good for the arms ;)

Oh dear, of course us mature boys never picked that up...no bottom end fiddling this time but I wouldn't mind having a go at sorting the front brake on the XLR, if I can get the spline arounda little further I'll get some adjustment back. At the moment it's very lowtech ABS like...

Yeah, but I don't need any more excuses for falling off...brake lever is touching the bars as is.

Ullrich will only sell me a 1200x600 sheet of 3mm Aluminium $56+GST, anyone else have any uses for it? I only need 400 x 200 for my bashplate...I'll happily go halvesies if someone else wants the rest?

I'd be up for half for the DR400F but I think I may be needing 6mm to keep the headers under the engine in 4 pieces.

Do you want to try my 50k sign?
2.5mm with plastic on top.
Zip tie it on and it'll stop any flying rocks.
Cut it with a jigsaw.
Bash it back into shape with a rubber mallet.

I've got some 3 or maybe 4mm checker plate that I'll donate. I'll try and get it down to a small enough piece to transport up this weekend.
