GoGal has just heard she's been successful in applying for 2 year contract teaching at their new Polytechnic. 6 figure salary, 1% tax, apartment supplied, very pleasant winters very hot summers! So in 6 weeks or so we're off! :wari: This fits in perfectly with our life plan, with the goal to bring back a suitcase fill of cash with which to travel for the following number of years...
FYI Bahrain is an Island in the United Arab Emirates, connected to Saudi Arabia by causeway, measures about 10 miles wide by maybe 40 miles long, has 2768 km's of paved road (NZ has 61544 km) - so a dual purpose bike may be in order. At this stage it seems that Bahraini law will prohibit me from working so I am looking at a 2 year stint as kitchen bitch! GoGal suggests I dissappear on a bike during the week, coming home at weekends - she's a KEEPER!
Anyhoo - I'm trying to identify "the" Classified Web Site equiv to TradeMe that Bahraini's use - does anyone have any Kiwi connection with Bahrain they could ask?
Anyway - bring it on!! Cheers for reading :sunny:

Good for her. My school is losing teachers to overseas contracts. Just can't beat the money they're offering. Often it's work in military schools for British soldiers' kids etc. Also, depending on the school, teaching here can be a bloody battle. Thankfully the kids at my school are generally great.
Excuse my ignorance but is alcohol legal where you're going?

I spent 2 yrs working in Riyadh, and a quite a few w/e's taking full advantage of just that loophole. Got sick of the bloody long waits at the checkpoints as the hordes of Saudis did exactly the same!

"D" day is now known................ 17 August, packing has started! Seems funny pulling out all the summer clothes so early. One curved ball is, I live in shorts in summer (and most of winter) but if you wear shorts in the street I'm told EVERYONE will stare at you - not culturally cool!

Bahrain isn't a great place to be a woman. Especially if you're an ex-pat.
Be prepared for some low-level harassment.

August 1st now, 17th is coming up scary quick.
How is the list of things to sort going?
You'll have to get yourself some of those Arab robe things since wearing shorts isn't the done thing.

Me and the wife were talking about this thread. Figured next time we feel we're in a rut we'll look for teaching / nursing jobs out that way ourselves. How did you find the job?
