The Tarawera 100 has rolled around once again. The date is July the 11th. It should be a good event with a few changes to try and avoid the problems experienced last year.

Yeah I'm not going for it this year. Next year I might give it another crack. I need to start hitting the gym again to get ready for any form of racing.

This year I'd say it will be sorted, the main issues were sign on, and people cheating.

I'm of the same irk (strange word that).
I'm sure they will get it sorted this year. Too unfit, fat, and bizzy (unfortunately) this year.

For all the noobis to this its worth doing though just to get to start with about 350 other hoons all at once. If they have about 20 starts I'd go for the adrenalin rush!!:Punk:

Don't worry to much about the $50 late fee, as long as the entries don't turn up to late next week. Or you could go to the trail ride this sunday and enter.

See on their site :
Hi all. An important note for those of you thinking about entering the Tony Rees Motorcycles 2009 Tarawera 100. We will be accepting race entries this Sunday (our July 5th trail ride after sign on) without late fees. That's good news for those of you that haven't quite gotten round to entering yet... we still have some room for more entries. Incidentally, the Tarawera 100 page has been updated with race entries. We've had a whole heap more arrive over the last two days, so keep checking back to see if you're entered.

See you there!

Shit mate you're going to be like me and learn it the hard way.

Tips - carbo load. Eat like a pig with good food before the race so you got energy.

Hydrate yourself - when you dehydrate you will make mistakes, feel jaded and crash. so make sure you make yourself drink through the race.

To be honest the start is a massive rush, but then its like a giant trail ride. you get caught in massive bottle necks and you have to quick to get past. takes about 5km to sort out the bottle necks and the fortunate ones that got a good start. Last year they gave you some options on the start of a easy and hard route, I took easy and got caught in the massive pile up. Take the hard option!!

Try to get on the front line for the start.

Also alot of the track is flat out straights, gear your bike up. I needed a bit more on my CR with standard gear ratios.

2nd July 2009, 21:53
After the race leader starts on the last lap, you have 30 mins to start your last lap. So that might be your 3rd of 4th depending how you go. Those guys leading are fucking quick too!!

how did thay cheat

B0000M
2nd July 2009, 23:54
well it got shortened down to a tarawera 75 last year due to poor weather.

about 5-10 km into lap 3 there was a cunty chewed out uphill section which due to the wetness on the pumice ground was in a state where once 1 bike had gone up any particular line, that line was fucked. when i got to this mass hold up there were at least a hundred bikes qued up behind. me and all the other non cheaters practicly carried our bikes up this hill as the ruts were impossible to ride through and there was no room for more.

after that point i got passed by about 2 other riders. however i was nearly last to finish.

the reason why- everyone else had shortcut'ed along the train tracks cutting out nearly 30km of the track... the same 30km that myself and all the other non cheaters battled our way through to get to the finish.

and allthough it sounds like fuck all, its pretty gutting to slog your guts our for hours in a race and carry your bike up a hill, only to find that all the people who cheated got a better result.

Having seen and ridden alot of the track I wouldn't say that there are alot of straights and you gearing would be fine as long as it is not to short for most trailrides.

Yeah i bet Aaron by 15 mins and 16 places. I managed to bin my bike in an amazing flip over the bars crash, twist my forks and hurt my wrist pretty badly that was sore for about 6 months. It was funny as i didn't realise how bad my wrist was till teh end of the race. I stopped about 5km from the end on the last lap I did (only got 2 in) and choc bar and go for a piss. I was so fucking knackered.

Funniest thing was watching Aarons car leave. Check it out on youtube, I try to snap Aaron's spoiler off, then we used Sam van and there is a point where Sam's van is drifting with a trailer next to a big fuck of ditch. Nuts.

all of that was like riding in wet concrete corners that looked like they had good burms you just blew through as they had nothing holdin them together makes for some interesting exit lines of some corners. (When as wet as last year)

If the weather stays right it will be heaps better this time .
Rider numbers seem down according to the website , probably 250 or so which will also be better than last year's 350 riders ....less bottlenecks:yes:

yip. the turn off will be the corner "in the town center" where the old gas station was that is burnt down. its now just a blank section with concrete walls or something there.

if its same as last year, you'll go down there a 1km or 2 and its on the right hand side of the road

there was one guy who didnt even make it past the first ditch which you had to jump and cause a massive pile up just after the shotgun, and there was a bottleneck at the first big hill. but other wise it was pretty free flowing, yea the rain stayed away, and in my opinion the track surface was perfect.

Great result for Karl's debut run at this event and considering that the Kings were pre running the course this week (according to one of my customers that was also racing this event) a minute and a half behind the winner, plus setting the fastest lap times I'm guessing he was one of the riders to take a wrong turn. Guess I'll hear for myself shortly.

Cheers for the link Camchain.

Karl will be chuffed with his result 1st go at it. Fastest lap a feather in cap. (No Chris there though?). Don't think I've heard of Barry Morris, good on 'im though!

Can't see what the story is with the DNFs, eg how can you do 3 laps and DNF when 2 lappers get on the race sheet? Very interesting re the 'royal' preview danger - but I see even DK DNFed!?
Sounds like a bit of trouble with leaders finding the course on 1st lap. Maybe some DNFers got pinged for missing some track?

DK crashed on the MX track, wrecking a radiator.
Karl got the lead when the Kings overshot a corner.
As for the Kings pre-running the track, definately not. In fact 1st pit stop they were complaining that they had geared their bikes too high for the track which was making it hard work in the tight sections.

Good on the guys who did the race - you're several thousand places ahead of the likes of me who stayed home!

Don't miss checking out the laps page, click on a name and it colour codes up with race position for every lap, hell that's a very cool way to review race info. Rory fought hard to only just miss out on a podium.

3 1/2 hours is a long time. People that haven't raced think it isn't, but to go hard for that long with out stopping to wait for your mates etc, fucks you.

Good effort, would have been some quick boys out there.

yea, botton third is were i thought i would be, after not having ridden for 3 months. there were some fast guys alright even on the third lap they just blew past like it was their first, being stuck behind some of the slower riders through the single track stuff was a bit frustrating,

looking forward to the 2-man and the suzuki 4 hour.:niceone:

The numbers in the table are rider's race numbers. Click on a name and you'll see colour highlighted what race position he was in each lap. Gives excellent picture of riders progress during race. You were actually about 10 places ahead of jt119 on lap 3. He nearly did the biz clawing you back on lap 4 though. Last laps are killers alright, over 3 hours racing is brutal work. Huge difference to trail riding with lots of little rest breaks.
---------------------

In the 'my other bike is a zimmer frame' class, I liked the fact there were 51 riders over 40 yrs old. 15 of those were over 50. Good to see plenty of life in the old dogs. (Just say no to golf)

Looks like if any rider started a lap but didn't finish it = DNF

NZ - MOTOREX KTM RACE REPORT – TARAWERA 100

Karl Power secures first in class and second outright

EVENT INFORMATION

- Event: Tarawera 100 - annual event

- Location: Te Teko, Bay Of Plenty

- Date: 11th July 2009

- Racing Format: 100 Mile Cross-country

MOTOREX KTM RIDER’S DESCRIPTION OF CONDITIONS

- Cold and overcast weather

- The track was rough at the end, and the dirt was soft

POINTS OF INTEREST

Karl Power

- Was third off the line to the holeshot

- Grabbed the lead ten minutes into the first lap

- Put down the fastest lap on lap three

RIDER QUOTES

Karl Power

“I headed to the event on Friday, and set up our pit area, then walked some of the track for familiarity,” said Power. “I was up early on Saturday morning to get a good pick on the start line. It paid off, as I was third into the first corner. It was a big field of about 240 riders.

“About ten minutes into the race the lead pack I was following took a wrong turn, and I dived into the fresh tail, and tried to make a little gap. Coming into the motocross track towards the end of the first lap the commentator thought I was a marshal, because I looked orange with my KTM and had a good lead. I quickly gassed up, and went onto the second lap of four.

“Half way through the second lap, Damien King passed me in a fast part of the track. I tried to follow, but he was going too fast, and I was wasting too much energy. I was only 25 seconds behind.

“On my third lap, I put down the fastest lap time of the day over everyone. As I came around to the fourth lap, I was very tired, and still looking good for second place. Into my fourth lap, I started to get cramps in my legs, but kept riding.

“As I came into the finish I knew I put in a good race, because I picked up the pace when I had to and held a good position. I am very happy to get my KTM up in second on podium at this Yamaha sponsored event. It’s equally rewarding that I was riding the KTM 250 EXC-E, while first and third place were both on 450 machines.

“I knew it was important to get KTM up there, as my team mate Chris Birch and Jason Davies are both overseas racing.

“This was my first time at this event, and I knew it would be hard to challenge for the win as Damien won it last year, and he also rides full time, and I still have to work to pay for my riding. It was a very cool event, and I will be back next year to give a go.”

I didn't ride this year but all respect to those who did.

The start of this event is the biggest rush you can have on a bike.

I know how it feels to complete this event, my first time I managed 4 laps and it took me 4h:26m, my hands were torn to bits and I was so dehydrated I was cramping for days after.

This is an event all off road riders must have a go at some stage during their riding career.

I was up there helping on Thursday and Friday and the Kings were certainly not up there. Also the track was only fully marked on Thursday.
