View Full Version : Working from home - BRILLIANT!

ManDownUnder
1st July 2009, 10:16
I am now full time working from home... it takes me 23 seconds (literally) from the front door to be sitting in my office... the weather doesn't worry me, no wear and tear on the bike daily and I work the hours that best suit me.

No need to shave, iron shirts, pay for gas, tires, piss around in traffic... all in all I get back about 75 mins/day! That's a lot of time and I'm loving it.

... and anyone with my home address is welcome to pop by for a coffee if/when it suits. Not too long as I still am on the clock, but I can make up the time easy enough.

Anyone else working from home/have similar experiences?

yeah it'd be ok it if was my business - it's a home office of someone else's private company. But any suggestions on maximising my tax position are very welcome...

I worked largely from home for a couple of years. While it was OK when I was programming as the house was nice and quiet, otherwise I hated it.

It's OK if you are a fairly disciplined sort of person, and have a designated work area, so when you're 'at work' you're in your work area, and can put on your work hat. Otherwise, it's easy to piss around and procrastinate and not do what you should be.

In theory, I'm supposed to be able to 'telecommute' in my current job, but choose not to. Apart from anything else, I'd miss the two daily rides.

I hear entertainment is a legit expense, but not sure which room in the house you would claim on for that...:innocent:

I work from home when i can't get things done in the office. Today I am sitting and filing shit from my email (citrix) ... loving in ... hot milo .. true blood playing on one monitor while working on the other doing mundane stuff ... haven't really dressed for work yet .. have to go in this pm ... but figure dressing can wait till I need to get motivated!

Otherwise, it's easy to piss around and procrastinate and not do what you should be.

That would be me, I would do everything else bar what I should be doing. There is no way in hell I would be disciplined enough. And I think I need my head read when I say this but....I would miss the people contact and start singing ....... I ronery, so ronery!

There are always down sides to doing that too - you don't shave, or look after yourself properly..... , cause you don't need to and no one gets to see you sitting there in your p.j's cause you're too lazy to go get dressed.....

You have no associates to join in for smoko's - no shouts (unless you pay someone on the quiet), imagine your work functions - or lack of it - LOL

And it would be very lonely working from home. Yip, I love going out to work and have fun with the people I work with. Each to their own. Only advantage to me would be staying by the fire on cold days, or being able to ride on fine days as you are obviously your own boss.

Interesting topic. I am a freelance contractor (Public relations/ communications / writing) and I have mixed feelings about the whole working from home thing.

I work from one of my clients' offices in Glenfield for 14 hours a week (2 short days). I actually enjoy getting dressed up a bit 'corporate' on those days (under my bike gear) and heading out of the house. I also really enjoy the half-hour ride to work and half hour (or more) ride home each day. I have also been known to get on the motorway and just keep on riding and end up in Orewa or somewhere drinking coffee because it was just a great day for a ride! As long as I make up the total hours (and don't miss any meetings!) it's all fine.

On the other hand, I also love the days when I work for other clients and work from home. It gives me the flexibility to pop out for a hair cut, or do some grocery shopping, or whatever I need to do during the day without having to make excuses to anyone.

BUT (and it's a big but) you absolutely have to have self discipline. I was earning a huge amount more when I was working a standard 40 hour week for another consultancy. Being perfectly honest, I rarely work a full 40 hour week when I'm working from home. And sometimes I procrastinate badly and have to work half the night to meet a deadline - purely self-inflicted.

My ideal situation would be either:
- Work for someone else 4 days a week and have a day just for myself, or
- Work from a shared office space so I would actually leave home, go to the office and work, then go home at the end of the day. If there were shared areas (lunch rooms, meeting rooms etc) I could fulfil my 'social' needs, while also having a private office space to go and work hard.

Well done Nigel, hope that you continue to enjoy it!

Since I retired and started consulting back to my old company, I've largely worked from home too, but have found that apart from missing general office banter, you do lose touch a bit by missing out on some of the "nuances" that float around a business. Hopefully, they won't need me much longer so I can do stuff I want to do, when I want to do it!

Anyway, I thought I'd share my first week of consulting from home with you and hope you don't have similar experiences. I was bunkered down in what passes for my office, concentrating hard on some legal documents when I heard muffled cries upstairs from my wife. She'd been stripping wallpaper in a bedroom, had cracked open a window and the aluminium frame had parted from the hinges - the pop rivets had let go! She was leaning out of the window, hanging onto the handle to stop it dropping onto the concrete below whilst calling for help . Managed to lean over her and retrieve it, but then had to get a ladder and pop rivet it back on in steady drizzle. No more paid work that day, concentration shot and totally pissed off!

But wait, there's more.....

Two days later, Jennie comes into the "office", saying she needed me urgently. Wasn't a happy camper at being disturbed again but why she needed me defied belief - her grey psychopath of a cat had caught a live and extremely agitated pheasant in the bush behind our place and dragged it through the cat flap whereupon it proceeded to thrash its way round the dining room and lounge, shitting everywhere and knocking things over. That caused a fairly sharp exchange but we both saw the funny side (eventually).

May you continue to work uninterrupted mate!:Punk:

LOL nothing so exciting for me I'm afraid. I got the back room of the Garage lined, cleaned out and set up as the office (which is where I sit right now). No pheasants, no broken windows (no windows at all in fact) but there's a dae mouse on the path outside if that counts?

The banter continues on the phone - video and VoIP so that's all good, but the problem I'm finding is leaving the office. Too easy to just pop out for 5 emails or whatever.

Overall - very positive.

I have been working from home for about 11 yrs now.
The saving in cost and time is huge.
Interestingly I found the problem was the opposite. I didn't piss around or procrastinate and worked looooong hours because it was so easy to do so.
It took about 6 years and a lot of discipline to get to the stage I am now where I will skive off.

Mate My advice for what its worth. Make a CLEAR line. THIS is my work and This is home. You have your office which is great so ok that office is WORK. Its not so much for you --although it does help with your personal setup-- its more for the little people around you.
I made it really clear to my guys.--Daddy n mummy in the office are at WORK. if you need us then we will come HOME to help with homework n stuff. Yea like you home is 20 feet or so from work.

I love working from home. I get 2 for the price of one for each hour I spend working at home. I don't usually do more than one day per week because I like to keep across the buzz in the office.

Been working in Wellington so much recently that working from hotel and remote office has taken over.

I guess it depends on how involving the work is - sometimes when I was programming I'd get heaps done.

If our Computer Dude would give me the proper instructions for remote desktop access, or the company makes my new PC a laptop, I'd work from home whenever I have 'serious thinking' work to do, as the orofice is too noisy with people talking to each other.

I'll be able to work from home soon. We've done a bit of an emergency preparedness exercise at work and something that has come out is the ability to do the payroll in the event of a 'critical event'. The outcome is that they're buying me a laptop to live at my house with which I can dial into our server and work away quite merrily. Apart from emergencies though, I'll be able to stay at home and work on normal work or projects when I can justify it. (I'm sure Ii can find a way to justify it when there's bike racing on Sky in the mornings.)

There are some great plusses to working at home but also some downsides. I have a home office for my company but found you have to have self-discipline. If you are a daydreamer then forget it.

I love going to different work sites but I find I am way more productive at home. It took me a long time to learn to ease off. I was working crazy hours and earning 3 times what I was on in my last job. I took on way too much work, I couldn't refuse a thing and it was slowly crushing me.

Taking advice I now have a good workflow, trustworthy contractors and more manageable work hours.

For example I worked until midnight last night, did some banking and business this morning and this arvo did the Coro Loop on EMPTY roads. Bliss.

Yeah, pros and cons...

Mobile is on 24/7 for problems, advantage is that I often don't need to go anywhere to sort a problem (being the IT, remote access isn't a problem ) meaning the fix is faster than the travel time etc. PC at home has 3 screens (like work) and can dial into pretty much anything I need, plus I always have my laptop handy as backup.

The downside... you can work evenings (and into mornings), weekends, etc. Handy for maintenance, as users don't usually appreciate taking things offline during business hours, but that work-life balance thing becomes rather mythical.

Still, normally at least an hour saved every day (so I can work more ), the mileage, etc. Keep thinking that hey, if things get quiet, I can shoot off for a couple of hours, clear my head, enjoy the flipside of working on weekends. Well, in 3 years, I have done it once, on one Friday afternoon... <_<
