View Full Version : Telecom's new un-capped data plan "Big Time"

Slicksta
1st July 2009, 14:04
Go Large will be turned off. Users will be offered an option to move to other plans - including "Big Time".
"Big Time" is full speed up and down, Go Large is full speed down only.

Data shaping only peak times from 3pm through 10pm.

Normal Internet traffic will not be shapped at all - only large files and some types.

Shaping works on a cache based rule. If you are the first one to download a large Apple update then you will be shapped. Once the file is cached, then it's full speed for everyone else.

Edit: cost is $59 a month

nbr link doesn't work for me.
You don't mention cost for big time. Let me guess, for the extra "benefit" I will pay handsomely?

Sorry $59 a month link seems to work for me mmmm

Telecom to offer $59 a month all-you-can-eat data plan - but with throttling

Go Large will be turned off.

Will be turned off?? This says it already has, but I'm still on Go Large.

Two years ago, its Go Large plan was taken offline after the Commerce Commission said Telecom had failed to highlight the fine print.

Taken off for people to sign up to it.
But with the event of this new plan telecom will turn off golarge for good.

The big change is the full-speed uploads.

Should make Big Time usable for people who upload to sites like Flickr/YouTube etc.

I saw rumors on Geekzone that it can be an upgrade option (I assume for $10) for those on Total Home as well so all good.

Will be interesting to see how it compares as I average about 160GB/month on Go Large.

Anyone know if they're able to target a delay onto Skype yet?

Yes, me to. I can up the throttle for my "linux distro" downloads :p

I might be able to stop paying for a seedbox just to seed all my linux isos.. LOL.

Then again with a possible replacement for Section 92 on the agenda still, maybe the seedbox and the privacy it brings is still a good idea.

Totally. I like to download rare unsigned bands and shorts by indie film makers. Gigs and gigs and gigs of 'em.

Resonable offer, how much is the Go Large? $49? or $59? If it's $59 would make sense for people on Go Large to switch.

Will have to wait and see what Telecom does to existing Go Large customers. Bulk migration or change at will.

Interesting OECD stats last in Data Caps but still up there in penetration. The Koreans seem to be getting a good deal.

So, Go Big is uncapped just like Go Large right?

There is no such thing as a free lunch, if Telecom can help it. Don't expect a great service, just real tight management of bandwidth. This new plan is probably how go large was meant to work in the first place. Go large failed because Telecom obviously didn't stress test before launch and the technology couldn't handle the design with so many users on it.

Go large is only great because so many people ditched it for dial up. Now that Telecom have a similar plan to Go large they can move the go large customers onto the new one.

Back to dail up speeds again.

Go large has always worked fine for me. I can torrent peak times at 100+ kbps. They answer there phones with in a min of calling. If you want an isp that cant handel there clients that would be xnet esp between 2am to 8am with there torrent plans

It's the cap you wear on your nob when it's up to make sure your load doesn't go in when you're down with her.

You wouldn't get much of that in Tokyo.

yeh xnet is fucking ridiculous, bought a megashares account to download linux distros fast as, and tween 2 and 8am it downloads at like 40k, wtf, national torrents go at 400k during the same time, and they didnt tell me when they changed free time from 12-8 to 2-8 so i payed for heaps of xtra data, a very good chance ill be switching to go big, as long as its still possible to browse the net during peak times.

THis better not mean I _have_ to switch from Go Large.

Just when downloading 400GB a month was fun.
