I just had the sad news that celtics bike was destroyed by fire in his garage this afternoon. A series of bits of bad luck has caused the entire garage to be gutted and the fzr is no more.
He would have posted this himself but has had problems with KB

Jeez, do you know what started the fire yet?

if celtic was in f3 i would be suspicious of Frosty trying to get the upper hand the under handed way :msn-wink:

hopefully everything is replaced under insurance Celtic

Hey all. Yup. Its gone.

This afternoon I decided to do some work on the bike pre-warrant time.

I had partially stripped in so I could do some work. I had the gargre lights on and I had disconnected the fuel hoses from the bike as I wanted to replace them with new ones. I had a few problems with my reserve/main switch so I had dismantled it to take it around to pete376403's place for a couple of ideas on how to fix it.

While I was there he commented on the noise from fire engines and we laughed about how fires could happen on a rainy day.

Well I got home and there's fire engines, and Gini, Tim and Nick are outside the house.

The garage is destroyed. Everything inside is burned up.

Six bicycles, a fridge, heaps of our stuff that just wouldn't fit in the house, all my tools, and, of course, one 1980s Yamaha Superbike.

Damn. Bikeless for a while...

But we are all alive and okay.

We can replace it all. We're insured up to the eyeballs. Never more will I complain about how much it costs.

So, when the money comes through, I'll be looking for another bike. I'd like 600cc+, 17 inch wheels at both ends, and ability to commute and do the takas with ease. I'll only have $4000 to spend so it will be an interesting search.

Cheers for your thoughts.

Oh, btw I managed to save the full-hp CDI from the bike so any of you who have Japanese-spec 2LM FZR750R's and want an extra 25+ HP send me a pm ...

Bugger sorry to hear that. Guy in rotorua put his four wheeler in the shed the other night within 2 minutes his shed was ablaze. He lost bikes stockcars tools everything and his insurance is not gonna pay because he used his four wheeler to pull a harrow round the paddock and the bike got to hot and they say the bike is not meant to be used for that. Bastards.

That is bad news. You seem quite philosophical about it, or is that 'resigned'? Sure it was just 'stuff' that can be replaced, but it's the finality of having no choice that hurts. Condolences from Napier mate.

You know, if there's one thing I learned this weekend, its that at the end of the day, its the riding, not the ride that's really important ...

Much as I loved my bike, it still needed work. As I guess all 17-year-old sports bikes do.

As for the pre-shopping, its a work in progress. There's such a huge list of stuff to try and sort out. There wasn't just a motorcycle in the garage. There was also two adults mountain bikes, a 20 inch bmx, a 16 inch girls bike and 2 12 inch bikes. And a pile of camping gear, all my tools, a chainsaw, weedeater, a fridge, all of Gini's clothes she'd put aside until she'd lost the pregnancy weight (including designer clothes and all her work clothes), a number of bags containing the next year or two's worth of Nicholas' clothes, at least 30 pairs of Gini's shoes, computer gear, and a whole pile of stuff I haven't even looked into yet.

We've just shut the gargre door at the moment. The assessor needs to come and see it as it is, so I can't start picking through to make a list.

In the meantime we had a look at new bicycles today. I'd like to replace my Avanti Atomic, but the new Atomic's a bit expensive and Tim has his heart set on a Raleigh 20 inch mountain bike with V-brakes, suspension forks and gears so I might just set my sights a bit lower...

As for motorcycles, yeah it looks a lot like I'm joining the gixxer crowd. But its still a few weeks until I get a payout so anything could happen.

But at the moment I've got my sights set on a rather tasty GSX-R750K (1991) model ... but I may have to settle for a J. Always wanted one of these anyway.

Give me a call at work Jim. I'll see if I can get out one day this week.

Guess I'm going to have to get used to the train again. Oh well, I need to read a few more books again. I've got an Anne Rice one lying about I haven't finished since I got the bike fixed up last July.

I've taken pics on a friend's digital camera of the gargre and damage. I'll try and post some in the next couple of days.

well glad its all slowly getting back together - And I thought I was unlucky.

Glad no body was hurt though, good luck and take care - life throws everyone a curveball but they normally are hittable, in this case a new MB... A blessing in disguise?

But I suposed you wouldnt be as self centered as me :P I'd be off to get a bike ASAP lol.

Cheers Logan.

Fire Dept were not exactly sure, but they believe it was an electrical short in the lighting in the roof which started a fire in the front right of the garage. There was a fair bit of stuff in the gargre as Gini and I put two families together three and a half years ago and moved from a five bedroom two storey house to this smaller one a couple of years back so we had to store stuff in the gargre.

Anyway, the flames started in the upper front corner, and quickly spread to the back of the gargre and set all the bags of stuff alight. Then it went around the other side of the gargre and hit all my cleaning fluids, oils, and petrol canisters. Which exploded. Then the flames really started.

Interestingly though, from the underneath of the seat down, there's almost no damage at all to the bike.

Can't say the same for above the seat though. Its all melted. The tank's ruined and has buckled from the heat of the fire. The windscreen's melted over the tank. The airbox has melted (underneath the tank!) into and over the carbs. The fairings have melted. The seat's ruined. The handlebar controls are melted.

Amazingly, there's still 3/4 of a tank of gas left... the tank didn't explode. The tyres and wheels are okay, the forks are fine, and the motor is okay.

The bike seems to be the thing that is least affected, as it was in the centre of the gargre. But its still a write-off.

erik

The tank buckled from the heat, and it's still got gas in it!?! :gob:

That's pretty bloody amazing.

From what you were saying about working on the reserve tap/fuel lines in your first post, I was wondering if the fire had started due to something related to the bike. I dunno if it's less or more worrying that it started just due to a fault in the lighting.

Good luck with finding a new bike and getting the other stuff sorted!

Yeah, I thought that of that too. However, fire dept guys ruled that out pretty early, as it was not the source of the fire. If it had have been, the tank would have exploded and the bike would have been more damaged, they say. In fact, apart from all the plastics being melted over everything, the bike's come out pretty unscathed.

I was verrrry careful to ensure I had drained all the petrol out of the lines and stuff. The garage door was open.

I have asked fire dept guys if there is anything we could have done to ensure this did not happen. Their response - no - it's just one of those things. :(

Sounds like shit to me. Perhaps he should go to the insurance ombudsman.
Normally, if the insurance company have a beef with something like this (say an electrical appliance is faulty and shorts out, causing a fire), then they pay for everything apart from the item that caused the fire.
It's not like he deliberately caused the fire by using his quad as a tractor. :spudwhat:

Don't forget to kick the cat occasionally. The little bastards deserve it. I reckon it was the cat.
Hear, hear! It's almost always the cat. Probably caused the quad fire too.

Has anyone got a pyromaniac cat they can lend us? I'd like our house to burn down....

Still, glad it was a garage fire and not a house one, and you are all ok.
