Hey guys. ive been lookin to purchase a shoei lately and i came across a second hand xr1000 for a good price.
when i went to view it, it was cosmetically in as new cond. can there be hairline fractures or anything along those lines that effect the safety of the lid even though its in perfect cond and the owner insists on it being lovingly treated all its life?
would you buy a second hand helmet? opinions appreciated, ta

What about the internal lining of the shell having been moulded to the person's head, and not yours?
No... I buy brand new helmets. The XR1000 in plain black is only $650 odd anyway...

That may as well be a billion dollars to some people.......
I think a very new/hardly worn one which genuinely has'nt been dropped etc should be fine if it's tried on and fits well, hell if it fits it fits.....
I know what you mean new is always best......if you can afford it
But I really believe there is nothing wrong with second hand, if it's in good condition, and fitting you well.
Hell i'd take that second hand Shoei if it fit and was reasonably tidy over a brand new HJC

Someone who uses the word 'only' & '$650' in the same sentence has far too much money. Gimme some.:crybaby:

I looked at second hand helmets a while back for a spare.
The ones in really good condition were more expensive than the price I could buy new ones for on ebay importing from the USA.
FWIW: If you like the A1 condition one you've seen and it fits well, buy it.

If there's absolutely no sign of any impact to the outer shell and the helmet fits you comfortably, I don't see any reason not to buy it.

I have two helmets - a Shoei and an Arai. I switched to the Arai after six months with the Shoei because it fitted me better than did the Shoei. The Shoei had proven to be one size too big.
Were I to sell the Shoei, it would be in as new condition. It has never been "used" or dropped. I would have worn it for another three to four years in perfect safety had the fit not become an issue. The internal padding may well have moulded to my specific head shape (wonky) but that is easily fixed with new pads. They are replaceable as we all know.
All of which goes to show that not all second hand helmets are dodgy.

Personally I'd buy any cheap helmet that met NZ safety standards over any 2nd hand helmet, There is no way of knowing the history of the helmet.
depends what a good price is too I guess - new XR1000's (RF1000's) can still be had from the US for under NZ$400 all up (eBay is a good place to start).
I bought a helmet from cash converters for $75,and used it for 8 years until the foam liner started to disintegrate.
They say if you have a $10 head, then buy a $10 helmet.Fortunately I have a $5 head, which saves me heaps of money in the long run.

How old is the helmet? Remember they only have a lifetime of 2 to 5 years. It might not have much life left in it ...

I've came off on the track, had my head bounce off the grass HARD twice and if I'd been devious enough to change the visor then the helmet would have had no visible damage....not even a scratch.
Buy a cheap new helmet if you can't afford the Shoei.

Wouldn't make any difference to me, I'd take the new option no matter who was selling or what they had to say.
My heads worth extra precautions.
Though keep in mind thats my personal stance, not telling anyone else what to do. Their head, they can stick it in whatever they like.....
And I have been using a helmet I got off my oldboy......Lmfao.

The Shoei XR-1000 only has a three star SHARP safety rating. I wouldn't buy the helmet for this one reason alone. Try and buy a helmet that is at least a 4 or 5 star rated helmet.

Indeed.
I bought an AGV X-Vent from a KBer, who'd bought it for his girlfriend to wear. It was in as-new condition, and served me happily for several years.
As long as it fits, and looks well looked after (no obvious chips or scratches), it's going to serve you better than some of the brand new el cheapo helmets on the market.
While we're talking about helmets, I was standing outside on Wednesday evening talking to a work colleague, and holding my helmet, gloves and tankbag. I dropped my Shoei XR1000 on the concrete, from a height of about 500mm.
Not a mark on it, but it made a horrible sound. :shit:
I was not happy. :crybaby:

I done a similar cunning move, Placed my brand new helmet over the mirror on my handlebars, It immediately fell off, dropped to the ground and landed with a loud crack.
Not a mark on her.
So I ripped out the interior padding and threw away the helmet.

ok thats a heap to go on. didnt really think of possible heavy impacts with no marks on the surface
i think ill hold out for a new one and pass on the second hand market. i suppose a few hundy more is worth the peace of mind alone.
ta for all your opinions, could well have saved me a head!!

My Suomy vandal is'nt even on the list......i'm, pretty sure it'll save my ass.
with top brand helmets these days I would'nt even bother looking at the "safety rating" they're all good, I think the rider reviews on overall comfort, wind noise etc are more important, the way helmets are regulated these days unless your like that guy off the LTNZ testing station ads and mr overkill safety man they're all much the same....yes some score more highly than others........there is nothing wrong with a shoei helmet.

Negative. There are some $1000+ helmets with only a 3 star rating. There is no correlation between price and safety.

Sharp=meh.
Personally I buy new but I use them till they are no longer comfortable or falling apart. I don't buy just for fashion.
I'd have no problem buying 2nd hand so long as it was in excellent un scratched condition & i would look VERY closely for marks, impacts etc.

I think the testing program they use is very good (as explained on their web site). It provides an easy way to compare the safety of different helmets, and is done by an independent body.
Would you care to comment on why you don't think it is very good?
Do you look at one of the alternative programs? The problem with standards like NZS/AS and the DOT system is they merely set a minimum standard. The helmet either passes or fails. SHARP has no pass/fail, it just says how safe the helmet is.
There are some very cheap helmets with 4 or 5 star ratings, and some expensive helmets with very poor ratings. They would all comply with NZS. Personally, I'd take a cheaper 5 star rated helmet than a $1000 2 star helmet.

Feel similar Headbanger, though I seem to be collecting good helmets!

I've done the same with slight cosmetic damage. Claimed insurance and replaced it, though I've watched that Arai video since and apparently that helmet would've been good as gold.
