View Full Version : South Auckland gravel bash

Crisis management
3rd July 2009, 17:26
Ride cancelled due to crap weather.

Latte Riders and Fat Pig racing wish to announce the next carefully organised and professhinally run event on the gravel roads between Auckland and whatever's south west of here....Masport-boy, you listening???

Treat this as a warm up for the MMMMM and the last chance for me to use up this balding Pirelli before getting a new tyre. :woohoo: remind me not to ride on the grass this time, eh Al?

Date: Sunday 12th July, thats next week....

Meeting point: The Autobahn cafe on the southern motorway just south of Papakura (and chez Bass) at 0900 or 9am if you have a 12 hour clock.

Ride: South of there, towards Port Waikato avoiding grumpy farmers and towards Raglan stopping at the Nikau caves cafe (maybe, judging by the amount of not stopping we did last weekend) then maybe down to Kawhia and back in a sort of loopish direction. About 350kms, so a good days riding at a reasonable pace, it's all on gravel and seal, at a wild guess about 70% gravel, but don't hold me to it.... and suitable for anyone willing to make an arse of themselves in public.

Plenty of options for doing bits of the ride if you haven't got all day but don't overcomplicate my life or I'll ignore you, ok? Hamiltonians, Limestone Downs looks good....

The coffees good, the gravel varied and interesting but you have to bring your own entertainment (and visas to visit the rest of Nu Zild if you're a Jaffa).

Due to techological incompetence I don't do calendar thingies so post stuff on here.

In answer to any of your questions, choose from the following;

Yes.
No.
Quite possibly.
Do I look like your mother?

OK, See you next week then.

The BFTP guys are riding up north on the roads you did last week. Now I can choose gravel rides, classic rides....or just ride by myself.

Whats this "hope" stuff, DRs can go anywhere. Be good to meet you.

Right, thats a quorum anyway so it looks like its officially organised then, must be a record 37 minutes (Edit, 2hours 37 minutes..too much wine last night!) to organise a ride....:wari::wari:

Cheers

Tuakau bridge is on the cards...I haven't really sorted the route yet but I am planning, Autobahn, Tuakau bridge, Onewhero, Waimarama, Ponganui road, Nikau caves, Richardsno road, Dixon road, Waimai valley, then either Raglan north head or straight to Raglan.
This bit is where we decide whether or not Kawhia is on the cards...so its either back north to port waikato via the coast or south around Mount Kario to Kawhia.
Return route again is a bit time and weather dependant, either up the coast or SH22.

Looks like thats the route sorted then. Where's me Zumo? :scooter:

Jokes aside - route looks acceptable :woohoo:

Thats a bloody long day.
Last time I looked Waimarama was in the middle of the South Island and popular with gliding fans.
There is a little place called Wairamarama out past Wunfero.............

So why can't you come on Sunday then?
It's just not acceptable you know!
If I can take 2 months to go and play in Oz with just a snotty old DR, you should be able to afford a single Sunday to come and play with a nice shiny Beemer.
It's not bloody good enough!
(The GS is just fine though)

Weekend after this one I might ride up to fletchers bay though (top of coro) again.

My penance is to work all through the coming weekend, so I'll miss this ride.

The penance is for PJay Son #2 and I spending 2 days last week up at FB, fishing off the kayaks. Some good snapper about, nabbed by softbaits. We each caught a couple over 70cm (approx 6kg). Windy on Wednesday, just glorious on Thursday.

But... are we having an Adv group explore of the Coro gravel again later this year, folks?

(Sorry about the threadjack, Iain).

In a vain attempt to get back on track, I will bring up the weather!

Looks a touch damp and, as per last time, if it's only showery or clearing I'm still going, if it's really tipping down I'm staying in bed.
My decision will be posted on saturday avo, any discussion welcome.

Suppose if it's that wet we're all heading for Fletchers Bay the following weekend?? :Pokey:

:

There is a difference from last time.
Back then, the weather started "Indifferent" and went to "Oh Shit".
It looks like it will be the other way round this time.
In as much as forecasts can be trusted in Orks, (about on a par with politician's promises), it looks like the weather will fall to bits late tomorrow and recover on Sunday.
Making the right call on Saturday won't be easy.

OK, latest weather shows heavy rain in the morning continuing until around lunchtime with strong southerlies, wet and cold.

With that in mind I am bravely staying in bed and watching the rain from the luxury of my house.

This ride is cancelled.

Well I managed to get the bike running, but it needs a bit of tuning. And the weather here is rapidly turning to crap. Has warmed up a bit, but looks like rain setting in, and getting windy.

May need to go for a short ride to adjust the carb if it clears later tomorrow.
