Top Of the South 1,000 km Adventure ride.
Formerly the DB1k...

As the DB has moved darn sarf for next year, what would the interest level be in a 2-day run over the Top of the South DB1k route?

Possible dates are anything from Dec 2009 to Feb 2010.

Maybe a month earlier or later than the DB to allow wallet recovery?

What say ye?

TOS DB1k ...so if a group of us do the ride, does that make us all a bunch of tossers?

I was sort of vainly hoping to do the yamaha safari in the sounds then the DB1K so can you fit in the couple of days inbetween.....

Otherwise it looks like the molesworth and rainbow roads all by myself.

I'd be keen, how 'bout in dates in December, longest daylight hours just before Xmas, and generally not so hot as January.
I can't make it further south for the real DBK01, childcare and work commitments in January. :crybaby: I do have most of Feb off tho, have already told her indoors a road trip is on my agenda..... a 1000km road trip in one day springs to mind:yes:.

So we talking about a one dayer or one & two dayer again? I'd be into a 2 dayer again - one day is prob too much enjoyment for me so I'd like to spread it out.
I prob won't go down south so pretty flexible with dates.

If there are any 2 dayers wanting to do it but not too serious, I'm not that fussed on having to do 1K but would rather have a good ride with others & rock up at the accom about 4-5pm instead of 9pm to socialise & kick back. The following day just cruise back to Nelson

Are we looking at options for this you think Nordie or will it start complicating things.

Please disregard half of my ravings as I just reread the initial post & the idea is for 2 days.
Getting accom at the Lake again shouldn't be a problem (unlike trying to get the smurf up at an early hour)

I was intially hoping to do the DB1K before it got moved south, so could be interested in this depending on what dates you decide on.

Was just talking about this last night with a few KBers and i had decided that the official DB ride was too far south for me, so would definately be keen for this one :woohoo: :woohoo: where do i sign :scooter:

Would vote for a January or February date

OK then.

I think it'd be too much to work it in date-wise (and finance-wise) with the DB1K and Safari so how does a Feb ride sound?

Also........

Extending it to 3 days and bringing in Golden Bay?
Cob, Mangarakau, Aorererere Gold Fields etc...

Maybe???

Sounds like a plan from my side. Feb would work well. And keen on the extended ride to make a sojourn south worthwhile

Sounds fan fran (oh gosh I am really really funny)
I think 3 day option is excellent. Maybe try & pick up accom over Golden bay somewhere (got a friend with a farm but unsure about fire risk etc)

So is this gonna change from a 1K to a 2-3 day adv ride based on the DB? There is a lot of riding over the hill I haven't done yet so would be good.

Perhaps instead of heading down to Springs we could cruise across towards Golden Bay instead, doing the Cobb & then maybe Anatori or as far as we can go on the 3rd day.
Remembering the Reefton ride, the larger no of riders the more lost time.

Sounds good to me too, but remind me closer to the time cos long term planning is not a forte' of mine.

3 dayer (makes ferry costs more justifiable) in either Dec or Feb and I'm in.

could we squeeze in Anatori?

I was also thinking about that Yamaha safari - keep in touch on that one. Its rides like this that prompted my bike change.
When do you have to register for that ride by?

Can anyone please tell me what the season opening dates are for the Molesworth and Rainbow roads. Cheers

Would there be any interest in doing it in early November? - contemplating a trip then ending up in Whangarei for a NZGA conference. Could maybe meet up at Hamner and then ride the rainbow together on way back up to Nelson??

I could be in so long as it doesn't clash with the southern DB1k.

I'm certainly interested in the idea mooted by Nordie Boy and commented on by Padmei and other Top of the South folks - ciao Aslan

Molesworth & Rainbow are just a good days ride out for Tots riders. No real need to organise rides for it - just post up a week or two before anyone wants to ride it & there'll be someone ready to join ya. There's always traffic through in Summer so it's not really like being in Mongolia.

Maybe we Nelsonites can get together for a ride (or blow someones bike up at shed nite) sometime & talk about options.

3 dayer (makes ferry costs more justifiable) .

Think that 3 day option would be the best for us Northerners and weather is likely to be better in Feb.:sunny::sunny::sunny:

The only problem with an early run thru Rainbow/Molesworth is gaining access before they officially open the road for the summer season. Usually it opens between Xmas and New Year which counts out early December unless someone can arrange a key for the gates.

Both the Rainbow and the Molesworth open on the 28th December now (Rainbow use to open early Dec). You can get access to the Rainbow before this if you arrange the key but never tried to get access to the Molesworth early/late.

I reckon if you are going to do this as a 2 or 3 day tour you should drop the Murch south section and loop from Murch (still do Porika/Breaburn) back north to Golden Bay.

Yep. Would make it a lot more relaxed over in The Bay and probably get to Mangarakau in time to overnight at the old schoolhouse (just have to make sure we can book it) and 100m back up the road to the Nugget Cafe for dinner...

I am also keen for a two or maybe a three day ride. Waitangi day is a Friday (5.2.10?) so that would be a good time to have it to save a days leave.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as the 6/2/10 i.e. Waitangi Day is on a Saturday this year we don't get a day off i.e. no long weekend. All my searching suggest this is the case but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Correct, Waitangi is no long weekend next year (2010).
Nelson anniversary weekend is a long one for us TOS'ers tho, weekend of 30,31 Jan and 01 Feb.
Might not work out as easy for out of towners.
