Was taking a holiday with the missus in Sydney and came across something pretty encouraging..

After hearing about overzealous traffic wardens and removal of bike parking in the 'nanny state' UK and the more or less grudging acceptance of bikes in NZ its nice to see someone doing it right. Not sure what local cops are like to bikers there though, I rented a car :woohoo:

Yeah I think its great and I've posted before about parking in Melbourne in particular - bikes own the footpath http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=39491 and this earlier thread too http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=297

Whoa! Sweet! It's cos owning a car in Sydney is retardedly expensive. Insurance is huge! Parking is madness, both with the amount of traffic and the cost. How'd you find driving your rental? Esp with the give way when turning right thingy?

Yeah - good call - imagine how much room 60 cars would take up - plus it's great eye candy :sunny::sunny::sunny:

Parking on the sidewalk over here is actually illegal, however in some areas you are allowed to park a bike in the paid parking for free.

Also, owning any kind of vehicle over here is expensive compared to NZ with regard to insurance and such. Bikes are actually more expensive than cars in that respect too. Plus there is no system like ACC, and I'm yet to find out the best way to cover costs of personal injury in an at fault crash.

Baddog, where abouts was that pic taken?

It's illegal in every state except Victoria.

Bikes are kinda similar I found...

You looking on TradingPost.com.au, bikesales.com.au and ebay.com.au I hope at private sales?

I think your medicare card covers a lot of costs. The only thing I paid was AU$540 for the ambo ride from the far end of Putty Road to Nepean Hospital when I spilt some milk.

Indeed. I should have been more clear by where i meant by here.

They are also very adverse to lane splitting and filtering too. Takes away all the fun of commuting on a bike.

I've checked out ebay and bikesales. Will have to have a look at tradingpost. The biggest killer in cost I've seen is the CTP for larger bikes. Though being under 25, getting comprehensive insurance is not something i'm looking forward to either.

I did wonder if medicare would cover injuries. I haven't got my card yet since i don't have a job yet.

Thanks for those

Staying in Kings Cross I actually gave up on no-right turn craziness when trying to fill up with petrol, issues going both ways. All I'm going to say is I can pull a damn smart U-turn when I have to. Also ended up parking overnight after negotiating rush hour tunnel traffic made us late.

Needless to say it took a little while to tear myself away :sweatdrop
Apparently i'm 'cute' around bikes... Obsessed is more accurate IMO.

At Uni I park inside the building grounds, I checked with a parking warden and they have no jurisdiction as its private property, so towing is at AUT's discretion. For me this is only when the local bike park is full/WOF is due on a weekday. Also manouvering around Com students makes me feel like a stud :wari:

Not 100% but I think pic was taken at darling harbour, possibly harbour street.

Yeah man - I paid AU$400(ish) CTP for my bike and was quoted around $AU3000 to insure it - for an agreed Au$10,000 value. AMI Insurance.

That was reduced to AU$930 after I transfer my NZ history.

Back then (2007) I was 25 and the bike was a K4 1000 with every performance extra, except engine internals.

Which isn't too bad, apart from the CTP. I paid around NZ$800 for my 636 here with Star.

Some people think it strange when I stop what I'm saying mid sentence and look around for the bike I just heard coming down the road.
