View Full Version : Why no hazard lights on bikes?
Timber020

I had to make a quick stop the other day and was thinking of all the bikes that break down, run out of gas or get in general strife. Why dont bikes have hazard lights? I cant think of a good reason.

Both normajeanes and my Harley do.
Press both indicator switches at the same time and viola! Instant hazard lights.

Small enough to not be a major hazard? Dunno... laziness and cost cutting?

Mine does.
Well the BMW does, the other three we have don't.

Suzuki road bikes have had them since 2003

Hazzards shouldn't be a big deal. LED ones would be better and less likely to drain the battery.
On the few times that I have been stuck, I have always pushed the bike off the road.
A fair comment would be that it would be much safer puching it off the road with hazzard lights flashing!

My Z1000 had them.

All my Hinckley Triumphs have had 'em.
None of my dirty bikes do. Reason: cost, complexity, lack of battery capacity maybe?

My Volty has them, and she was made in 1995!
Can't be anything to do with cost or complexity if they can be installed on a Volty.

I use them a fair bit too. Like if I'm stopped at a red light and there's a car coming up behind me and I'm not sure if they've seen me, or sometimes when I'm lane splitting, or when it's dark and I leave my bike in front of the garage door while I go in to open it and I'm terrified one of the neighbours will come racing down the (shared) driveway and scuttle it! :gob:
Now that I know some bikes don't have them, I'm going to use them as my special 'wave' to other bikes... just because I can!

I though of this as going down the motorway today looking at broken down cars.....if bikes had hazard lights my mother would put them on through round abouts

Triumph Tigers have got hazard lights but most cagers ignore them, especially when you are negotiating ice, bastards!
I really hate to agree with anyone on the site....but every bike I've had since 2000 has had hazards.(before 2000 none of my bikes ever had indicators...'cept the C50)

So now the question is "Do you really have no hazard lights or is it that you just don't know how to work 'em?"
Last post like this I saw it was they had 'em but didn't know how to turn them on.

Rear fog light would be more useful but you guys too daft to even require them on cars. Hell, what would be the point tho...over half the dumbasses here don't even put their lights on when its foggy

The ones with fog lights will turn them on when it isn't foggy as well. Just what everyone needs, bright unidirectional light.

I have riden with a two different people who use the hazard to warn riders behind them of hazards (gravel etc on road), this is espially useful if someon enew to road and other person more experniced.
Suzuki has them, the aprilia does not.

I HATE the euro cages that have a blindingly bright rear fog light... all the eejits that have their fog lights on when there's not an ounce of fog about piss me off :argh: plus it's technically illegal. Luckily most boyracers drive Jap cars which don't have them :woohoo:

My ZRX1200R, ST1300, FJR1300 and SL750 have all had hazard lights. Ditto for Mrs H's two Marauders and how her Bandit.
Perhaps a better question is which bikes don't have hazard lights?

No point in having hazard lights on a GSXR1000, because the rear ones are always pointing into the ground, and the forward ones always point toward the sky, so unless you're signalling to airplanes there's really no point.
I don't plan on breaking down so they aren't needed.....yet
They're not there just for when you break down. My Harley has them and I use them when going through twisties so big 4WD's towing caravans don't rear end me.

"airplane" if you're American... "aeroplane" for the rest of the world.
I suppose you say "ass" instead of the correct "arse"?

You do understand what vernacular means right?? Colloquialisms are part of the vernacular. I dare you to find any New Zealander in the street that doesn't know what an 'airplane' is. I'm not saying whether it's in the dictionary or not but that it's a word that the majority of people know. In saying this, if they can put words like TXT into the Oxford English Dictionary in 2009, I'm sure it'll have Airplane ;)

No different to clowns who drive their bikes on full beam during daylight. Don't blame the cars...blame the gormless 'so that's what that button does' idiots who drive them. I honestly wonder about people who must drive 100's of km's without so much as looking at the pretty lights on their instrument cluster.

I have hazard lights on my scooter and have used them a couple of times to warn approaching cars at the scene of a biker mishap (not me).
I would assume that a Goldwing would most likely not only have hazard lights but also a reversing beeper.
