just looking for info on this area. is it rideable in winter?
also the erua forest? found some posts made in 2005 and was just wondering about current access. looking to make a weekend of it

I've not ridden it in winter but I tend to be riding bigger bikes throught there anyway (KTM990) but I would have thought it was passable to any trailbike all year, just watch the river levels as they are fed off some big catchment areas and can get deep. I have always rung DOC at National park for updates on track conditions.

Have ridden it in winter and it has been fine.....just a note the 42nd you do share with 4x4,horses,hunters and mountain bikers but its well worth the ride through and there is alot of extra tracks that lead of it....and they are worth the look but use common sense be prepared and give yourself plenty of time

Volcanic Plateau...it's named after State forest 42 that it traverses', the tracks about 46kms of neat countryside, nothing technical as it is a 4x4 track but a great ride.
Runs between Highway47 (National Park to Turangi) and starts about 10kms from National park and ends at Owhango. Best way to ride it is from National park to Owhango, lunch & beer at the pub then back again. There's about 5 stream crossings in it and it's awesome scenery, lots of side tracks to explore as well.
Have a search of the Adventure bike forum and you may find some photos from there, we certainly have had a ball in there with big bikes at times.
Also look out for Fishers track in National Park.
