Primary reason fior starting this thread is to have a discussion on Boundaries, but we can also use this thread for other discussions,re Welly Tag o rama.I think we should try to keep the main thread as "clean" as possible cos sometimes its hard to find the new tag post!
I have thought we could go as far north as Palmerston north and Masterton?

We have to be very careful as that lot up norf (HB) may take it into their heads to steal it.
As long as it stays in the Welly crews range, I'm happy with that.
We can make a call that if it gets 'stolen', then we will just take the previous tag and carry on from there.
Because as much as I like road trips, I would hate to use a tank of gas to go get the tag only to find it has been taken further afield and out of reach.
That would kill the game.

I would prefer to keep it slightly closer, say Otaki or even Waikanae, until the weather improves and the nights get a little lighter. There ARE a few of us prepared to face the elements for a short blast to get the tag, but I for one am not prepared to do a 2hr round trip after work, in the dark and cold just to find that someone more local has already grabbed it. (sorry you guy's up the Kapati coast). I also don't think my other half would be very amused!

I know it has stayed very local to Welly in the last couple of weeks but that has been just to keep it rolling along. Maybe we 'locals' need to move it slightly further afield up the coast to give the Kapati lot a chance.

Once the summer arrives (if it ever does) and the nights get lighter (and warmer), then we can revise the boundaries.

Just my thoughts....

Im happy not to take it too far North, I think Palmy would be fine in the summer months but not so much right now perhaps Waikanae, Te Horo or Otaki. Being from Waikanae Myself I would like to be able to post within my own district so I can utilise some of the landscape features that I am a little more familar with. I made the effort for the Porirua tag yesterday and had a tag worked out in my own stomping ground, but decided to keep it further south so that the Late nighters ( the NUTS, as I think it was put ) could still keep the game alive, Would like some clarification on the Boundaries, because I think the Effort thing swings both ways.
Im with Hawkeye on the resolution to a stolen tag, we just continue the game from the last legit tag - that would soon take the Wind out of any Jaffa's sails.
Perhaps - in the long term a game of "Capture the Flag" between North Central and South, where members from different districts try to move the flag(tag) closer and closer to a Predetirmined Host point in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch where team play is encouraged for players to pass the parcel toward their districts host destination while those further afield try to claim it back.

I don't see any problems with the game so far - other than myself not getting as many tags as I'd like! But perhaps we could impose a km radius limit from the last tag for example.

7th July 2009, 10:30
I'd say its contained itself nicely at the moment, I know sin would be happy to extend things further north but until daylight savings kicks in I think the distances covered so far are spot on, once we've got more daylight hours I agree though, Imho i think a line across the country from fielding to dannevirke is a good option

7th July 2009, 10:47
Yeah put a limit on the radius before it does get snatched and taken north !
You guys are working it nicely and its fun to watch !
recognise the odd one but ya wont get me coming out when i know there are three of ya after it that are more local, but i'll keep watching and waiting to snatch the odd one !
Happy to work within boundaries !

FWIW i have edited the rules to show that the tag has to be dropped in the local area.
This is how the Yanks play it,so each game stays within the original State or area it was started in.
Its a cool idea to steal a tag,but whilst the theif can claim it we just continue to play otherwise we will be in a holding pattern till we can get it back, and thats no fun.I guess a side game could start where tags are stolen and retreived, but the main games have to go on I reckon.

That sounds like an awesome idea. Our game is very close to home at the moment but this would be good way of getting some BIG rides in.

i reckon we start a game called steal the tag where say the Auckland guys do steal our tag. They post the steal on the "steal our tag thread"The main game continues as normal. However the Auckland guys post up OUR new tag which coincides with a certain Auckland Tag.our task is to then follow the auckland game from that point until we can steal our tag back. The new Auckland tag which coincides with a normal Auckland tag is posted in the auckland game AND on the "steal our tag" thread. When we steal the tag back its posted on the auckland game thread AND the steal our tag thread. The normal Aucklaners ignore this grab however and the the first normal Aucklander to grab the tag continues the Auckland game as normal.Does this make sense.I have confused myself a little!

Then the Welly crew could be tasked to steal it back and pass it back up the country.

How about this then:

We could start a 'lets pass the tag around the country'. Start in Welly, post it close enough so that the HB crew can reach it. They then pass it up Norf and we see if we can get it right around the country.
We could even have an actual KB flag which is dropped and picked up with photo's to show the drop/pickup. (must have the flag and the bike in the picture).

And when it get towards summer, it can go back around with drop offs in more extreme places like the bottom of the ski lifts on the ski fields etc.

I like that idea of the KB flag thingie as well. But how would you stop the flag getting stolen by Joe Public? It needs to be hidden somewhere.
Geocaching follow a similar principle but on a worldwide scale, they use "travel bugs" and "geo coins" instead which are a lot smaller and easier to hide than a flag.

As for the actual boundaries of the current game:
I reckon limit it at the Otaki township up the coast and perhaps Greytown, Martinborough in the Wairarapa.
There are quite a few KB'ers up the coast and there seem to be a handfull at least on the Rapa side of the hill.
Could make for a couple of nice trips over the hills in the weekends.

OK, I'm discussing it in THIS thread :bleh:. I understand the concerns about remote posting, but I reckon we may be in danger of introducing too many rules to the game.

I don't think we need to try too hard to create a level playing field since we all probably have our own advantages. Like local knowledge, a bike that runs, lack of sanity etc.

Perhaps we just keep an eye on things - let's not pretend we don't watch the tag thread like hawks - cause for the moment it appears to be self moderating. Less is more.

Hawkeye, I interpreted "no file photos" to mean just that, meaning the new tag should be shot on the day as well.
I have missed two tags( both to you I think ) by stopping to get the new tag on the way home before posting up the claimed tag.
maybe this needs to be clarified

I think you should be able to get a new tag after coming home from getting a tag. If the rules were that you had to get the new tag before claiming and posting the tag you just got, the possibility would be that the new tag would not move far from the old one, as most guys would grab a spot near the old tag or a spot on the way home.

BMWST?
12th July 2009, 12:28
i think you interpret the rules correctly cloggy. In the beginning it was ok to grab the tag and take an hour or so to get a new tag picture but the game has become so fast that if you take a detour to get a new tag you can miss out.I am not organised enough to get file pics to use as new tags. The whole idea is to get out and about IMHO.I think its relatively important to use fresh pics as many little clues can help you figure out where a place is.If its a pic from a few weeks or even months the whole vegetation, lighting, can change.

I think we each make the call around heading home to claim the tag first and then going for the next one, or getting the next tag on the way home and risking being beaten to the claim. That's everyone's own choice. It just means that there may be a delay between a tag being claimed and the next one being posted should we post first then go get the next one.

Using 'Filed' tags: Obviously when the vegetation in the background is a clue then it must be VERY recent. But as a lot of the tags are of landmarks where the surrounding vegetation has no bearing (memorials are the prime example), then I have no issues with RECENT 'file' shots. It helps to keep the game moving.

But at the end of the day and for the sake of the game, we don't need to debate every little thing. BMWST, you started the thread and put up the original rules, so I have no problem with you making the call on this one. I'm sure everyone will just go with the flow.

rules as posted page 1 of welly tagorama thread

Tag o rama!
Welly TAG O RAMA

Rules are easy...

#1 - Find the tag and reproduce the photo (as best as possible). The first person to post a found tag gets to place the next tag. If you get a tag, but somebody else posts their picture first, you lose.

#2 - Take the tag to a new location(location to remain in "host area"), get the photo and post it here. Give a few hints so the next person can figure out where the tag is located. Try to place the tags in interesting locations, maybe a bit of history that can be found down some nice twisties.

#3 - Tag must be a) findable and b) may be placed on a dirt road if a street bike can make it. Maintained gravel is OK, but make sure to let folks know that gravel is required to get to your tag. We don't want to exclude those who don't like to get dirty.

#4 - File photos are NOT permitted. You gotta ride to play this game.

#5 - Your bike has to be in the TAG picture

rule no 4 looks pretty plain to me.
not trying to be a wouser, and I am having a ball playing the game, but if the rules are going to be changed mid game, then it should be made clear to all the players.

Good to see your game down there going strong. Ours hit a major snag when the tag ventured out onto an island lol. That sat for like 2-3 weeks. Now people aren't happy with the tag going afar. Ya can't please everyone can ya?

We have had a similar debate about moving to a thread from the social group. The only problem I see with the social group is adding in the photos and the air time it gets with the rest of KB. If KB did make a separate Tag-o-rama sub forum that would be awesome. Would be all in one place and easy to use.

Another good thing about the social group is you can see how many players you have. We have 59 members. Not sure how many people keep up with the game. about 20 of those have got a tag. Not a bad effort I would say.

Have you asked Spankme about making one?

If the bike has to be in the pic then can we also state that the identifying object is also capable of being in the pic. 2 bikes on full beam couldn't give enough light to get the building lit up enough. It was 25mtrs away from the road.
As I said to aero, both of us being there is confirmation that we did actually try to get the pic. If we had moved the bikes any closer we would have had to lift them over the fence.

It does make it a little more difficlut though to try now and choose tags that can be identified at night - By camera, now we are suggesting that everyone has to allow for the capabilities of the camera and photographer as well.
At least half of the TAGs placed so far would have been null and void because they could not be accurately recorded at night. I think that a little give and take needs to be allowed in these situations - at the end of the day shouldnt the guy who placed the last tag be able to judge whether or not the retrieval effort and evidence is valid ??? I for one stated that Hawkeye and Aero's effort was perfectly legit, and had I not had that tag as an option last night then the new one would have remained unposted untill i got home after work tonight - and the coasties would still hold the prize :first:

its all been done and gone now,but the rules state quite clearly the bike must be in the pic and its been agreed on this ocassion that its not feasible.
But from now on the bike must be in the pic. That is the rule.If it means a tag cant be got ,thats part of the game, its the same for everybody.Personally half the game for me is the actual pic.I have chosen(like last night)NOT to go for a tag cos i dont think the pic will do it justice, but hey thats me.Any night time tags have to be able to be reproduced.Lets not get bogged down in this we have done nearly 100 tags with only one blip,so it can be done!

What has me concearned is the thought that now I cant place a tag with a backdrop - Say Kapiti Island during the day, becuase if someone decides to track it down at night they wont be able to capture the island in the Pic.

The whole point of this is :

1. Playing the game

2. Getting out for a ride

3. HAVING FUN.

If we get too wrapped up in rules and regulations, it's a sure fire way to kill the game.

Also if integrity comes into question - that's another nail in the coffin.:Playnice:

Lets just play the game with honesty and integrity or we will all be losers.:(

Using that logic, the tag would still be in Kapiti. Twice I have went to get it in the middle of the night but failed due to locals. I am now in work during daylight hours, so therefore have to wait until next Saturday for a chance to get it back.
Like I said in my previous post, that's the easiest way to kill the game.

I think you summed it up in your previouspost H/E
If you look at the original rules, they are fairly basic and easy to follow, lets keep it simple and honest.
My reference to waiting for morn would only apply in a situation where reproduction was impossibble. Normaly there is a distinguishing feature in the original that can be replicated

i dont know why every one is getting worked up.Up until now the game has worked very well and i am sure will continue to do so.Remember we have nearly 100 tags with only one hiccup. There are only 5 friggen rules. The bike in the pic is the crux of the game!
The night time tags have been good, and the twighlight ones as well!we doing good!
Lets drop this and move on,I am sorry if have called anyone out.The enhanced pic and the fact that two players were there and the qe2 sign puts it beyond doubt, but lets try to keep on as we have ie 90 something tags with bikes in the picture!

The boys in Kapiti are all well aware that the best place for the Tag to be during the week was within reach of the Welly Lads, there are a lot more of you than us, and you will keep the game hot during the week, so it was my intention when I shifted Sketchy's Paek BP tag that it be in any easily recognisable place for the Welly boys to lay there hands on if they wanted it back - unfortunately Traffic meant that I could not fuss around with the landmarks too much and had to get a tag in before the light failed.
I am with you, too many rules and regulations are going to screw the game completely, but I think if we try to rule that the locations are limited to only those that CAN be photographed at night then that is going to screw things up too.
Truth be told - we all know each others characters on line reasonably well, and we know that Nobody is going to out and out "cheat" others out of a fair game, so i dont really think anyones integrity will ever be questioned ...... I just hate the Idea that Hawkeye and Aero were standing out on the side of SH1 in the cold and dark last night cursing that a coastie had deliberately diddled them out of a night time tag - as that was never the intention .........so there :bleh: LOL.

i was just thinking about what could have been done about last nights tag... sorry i dont want to drag anything out again but just have a suggestion.

if your camera allows for it, have a look at changing the shutter speed so you can leave it open a bit longer, this will allow for better photos in the dark as its open longer and letting more light in..

if your not sure if your camera has this setting look for a "TV" this allows you to set it to shutter speed priority

lemmie know if your camera has this and you want more info on how to use it

Quasi is right, and I think it is plain to see here that we have a good bunch of guys all playing a game, whom never meant one another harm. I for one should have dropped it ages ago but felt some guilt as it was the tag I placed that started this one rolling and just wanted everyone involved to know that we kapiti boys had had a ball, and just wanted to hand over the reigns once again. How about this - make the 100th a "communal" tag. See how many of us can get it and then meet up in the weekend or something. So basically everyone gets tag #100 and it's not disclosed/"got" till the meet. What say yous all?

In a nutshell, make every 100th tag a milestone of sorts where everyone gets a chance to nab it for say, a week after it's posted or within the week it's posted.

I was thinking about doing a treasure hunt to find the place. If I get sorted in time, I'll organise some clues to find and I'll drop off some tags to be picked up at each location. A bit like the Amazing Race but you will get the clues to each location up front. They will be able to be picked up in any order which means that we all do a similar distance but not all in the same order.
You can then plan your route to pick them up (after decifering the clues).

The final location will be the meeting point.

How does that sound to everyone?

May still be able to make the meet, trying to arrange someone to cover on call, but wont be able to chase tags, am still working my way through Hawkeyes list - have a couple that are confusing people already sorted, might have to team up with the kapiti boys.

Maybe - Scout (Jeff)

I like the current map. It's a bit slow, but it helps finding spots that have already been tags or areas that have been neglected.

Nah! I didn't do the tags to make a big deal out of it. It was just a bit of fun. Like I said in post #1, If you don't want to get the tags, just turn up for the meet. Doing the tags was just a bonus for the crazies among us.

makes sense i spose, you three are a bit more central to all areas, another statistic to get out the of sheet!

BMWST?
11th August 2009, 22:58
Can all taggers please go to the stats sheet and add a "home" location next to thir name on the overall tags claimed table...you can be as accurate as you wish ie Mirimar,or Wellington,Lower Hutt or Maungaraki,as long as the suburb/locality you choose is recognised by Google maps.....kapiti for example is no good,it looks down near dunedin!.I will use this location to do some work on distances.....The stats sheet is editable by everyone at the moment just follow teh link below or on cloggys sig......once this is done i will hide that column....

Im a newbie but heres my take-

My first TAG -taken at Upper Hutt- placed in T-Bay and I live on cold side of Mt Wainui - nice arvo's riding thanks to TAG Orama

Made my 'herculean effort'- treatment plant at the Bay
Thought it was the bomb- tricky shot- outside fringe of map- 5.10 pm i took the pic and road home to place post- went to dinner with wifey and kids smug that 'my' tag was gonna twist some nungs....

THEN some crazy ass gixxer owner went out in the wet/black and nailed it! :Oi:
I was hoping the council gates would keep it safe overnight- sigh

Issue with too many riders from Hutt-
Hutt just has a big rider population I guess-
:niceone:
Someone said to me I was mad owning a bike in WOA with 'that' hill in my daily path- hell it adds to the rush to be honest, 12 fast off camber tight gravity fed corners each way, every day, brekky and dinner - YEEEHAAAA!
(sorry I digress)

Could a rule be made that riders placing tags must place at least xx-km from home base etc?
Force some inter area/suburb movement?
:chase:

Well, maybe as opposed to a dedicated 'taggers' group maybe just a wellington group predominately started by the core players- we could use that group for just organising rides- picnics- beer runs- etc-

When in the group you get notifications of posting in the group room it seems so tracking group activity/posts is real easy

As you can tell Paul, we dish out the crap while we wait for new tag's. It's all in good harmless fun so don't take offence.

Now when the bloody hell are we going to get a new tag?:bleh:

If you need a tag to help you, I have a pic of my bike on my front lawn.....I promise not to go get it...:blip:
