View Full Version : DR650, doing the dynojet and tank job .. Got a spare hose?

So, I carefully remove the tank after draining it and removing the fuel line and vacuum line.
All is cool so I walk around to the right hand side of the bike and there is a hose, not connected to anything and doesn't look like it has been connected to anything, no other outlets on the tank so WTF does it do and where does it go?
This is the traitor below, just it just hang wild and free??

Breather (Air vent).

Thanks gents, I will tuck it somewhere safe, seems bizarre ... to not even have a filter.
DJ ket in and the Jesse mod complete.
Will swing the tank on now.
For those who have fitted the DJ kit is it better remove the backfire mesh or leave it in??

My breather vent ends in a filter and is secured on top of the airbox.
I leave the mesh in as if you want to race it will stop grit getting in if you remove the filter completely.
To get the best of the jet you have to do some opening up of the breathing. The first jet is for standard breathing. You can cut out the top of the airbox. Grind out the restricting weld at the header or if you well off get a big bore header and a free flow can. Check out Nordi boys thread as him and others talk about the mods there.

I thought that hose was an overflow ?
The breather with the filter on the end is the one above with the elbow coming out of the carburetor.

The overflow is a smaller diameter line from the top of the float bowl, from memory there are two carb breathers that disappear under the tank but if IIRC they are connected together via a 90 degree fitting. I recall it being somewhat puzzling but seemed to work.
I don't recall having a hose with an open end floating around, shit loads of dirt will go down there if it is left open.
General caution, I sold the DR almost a year ago so I'm working off memory here.

Not that one, I have that and it is cool, this is just a clingon doing and going nowhere, I have strapped it up.

Overflow for petrol?, maybe a air balance hose but seems unusual not to be protected or fitered.

I could not see a another hose connection or any other fitting and nothing attached to the frame etc, will have a look in the light of day and see cos it does worry me being open like that for the dirt reasons

Yes I will be doing a bit of fun racing for sure, do you take your air filter out for the track?
Is the backfire screen restrictive at all for the 99% of the riding? if ther is no reakk difference I will leave it but if there is a restriction it can go.
I am still running the stock foam filter ..assuming it is stock, an open pipe, 160 DJ main and I drilled the slide.
Not too worried about extracting the last little bit of hp out but wanted to make her run smoother etc rather than lean that she was.
Will be cutting the airbox top tonight and that will do I think, as long as she runs better than prrvious then sweet.

No filter or connection.
Presumably the location is to minimise the ingress of foreign matter. If it is just a vent it won't have any air flow as such.
The vent above it and the similar one at the rear are above/below the slide. They need filters. The 640 has some to stop boulders getting in there; one of the mods is to replace them with small 3cm pod filters.

Heya warewolf, cheers for that.
I was thinking along similar lines, I will place a dome cap over it which will still allow it to breath easy but should help prevent getting anything firing in directly.

That sounds great. When will you be heading for the track? I will be at Teretonga this Sunday 12th July and Levels Saturday 18th July. You will love levels on the DR especially. I take the airfilter out for the track but for memory am running a 165 main??? If you run without an airfilter I really recommend a tethered kill switch as when someone bins at Levels there is always a huge cloud of dust and dirt, also why I keep the mesh screen. I didn't drill the slide, I am probably wrong but thought that gained low speed responsiveness rather than power. You will be on full open throttle or brakes most of the time anyway. Rout the carb overflow into a small pillbottle or similar as it does spit out petrol a bit and is currently in line with your rear tyre. Give me a yell if you need anything, I got tyres etc you can borrow until you get sorted.
As far as fun racing goes you will be safer in the Motard class than the "Have a go" class so will need an MNZ Race license sorted.

Thanks , really appreciate your help eh, nice getting stuff done without the big mistakes and redos.
Will ring tonight, did try last time but ISP trouble dropped that.

Doesn't the yankee bikes have a whole extra bunch of plumbing for emission control stuff? Which would be blocked off / hanging spare on an Aussie-spec bike? I vaguely recall having had something similar to that before on a bike which turned out to be green ozone-sensitive additions ...?
just muy 2c - could be waaaaay off here

I checked that line today while swapping carbs.
Call it a vent line if you like but turn the carb on its side and fuel pours out of it given the large bore.

Well I redirected mine up along the frame last night toward to two rubber tank supports, I had a dried out vivid permanent marker pen which I cut in half and used as a cap, perfect for breathing, tough and the right dia.
I also cut a scollap out of the side of the hose near the end so it would not seal itself at the end of the pen body.
This will stop shit flying in anyway.

Indeed it does,page 17 - 7 of the manual.
Whoops,I had the one on my bike at the rear of the cases (not sure how long though) but not sure that might have gone well if submerged.
It must have been along the frame before but wonder what happens if the bike is dropped on that side and fuel came out of it,into the sidecover then perhaps onto the exhaust when stood up.
