From the Statistics NZ website (http://www.stats.govt.nz/products-and-services/hot-off-the-press/balance-of-payments-intl-investment-position/balance-of-payments-and-international-investment-position-mar09qtr-hotp.htm):

Net international liabilities were $176.6 billion (98.2 percent of GDP) at 31 March 2009, compared with $167.4 billion (93.2 percent of GDP) at 31 December 2008.

That's about $41,000 per person and it is mostly private debt (http://www.stats.govt.nz/NR/rdonlyres/697F3C87-17AE-40C4-B4D4-A17A54D032A4/0/balanceofpaymentsandinternationalinvestmentpositio nmar09qtrhotp.pdf) rather than government debt.

Not too flash! I can remember the shock-horror many years ago when it was announced that it was $3,500 per person! (Okay, that was many years ago...)
