These theives are getting the better of us...one too many times...
This could be the databse that Cheese's angle grinder shooting, Bedford driving, theif nabbing A Team works off...:sherlock:
Thinking of a simple db, or just an online dump holding any information regarding bike theives, appearences, dodgy vehicles, fake plate numbers, areas etc...Pictures would be ideal, as it would help if everyone had a visual in their heads rather than just a description to match with what they're looking out for...
What are your thoughts? Think it would help? Think it would be a waste of time, effort and online parking space?
If I get positive feedback, then its something I could work on and get done, else we could just wait for the threads to come up and look at the descriptions there...

It's probably illegal, or at least potentially subject to legal action from people who could be named on such a list.
New Zealand has a justice system for dealing with things like theft and willful damage.
I would strongly recommend leaving this matter well alone.

I see your point and it is an extremely valid one...
Did you read the thread about the theives in the Waitakere's? Where andy101 saw the guy lurking around and when he spoke to the cops they said they couldnt have done anything? He was driving a vehicle with fake plates FFS...its just frustrating that between seeing the fucksticks and up until the justice system comes into play...there's a big gap..

There is no fairness in the justice system. Everything gets lost in mountains of paperwork, departmental protocol and petty rivalry. The seriousness of a crime and how it affects the victim doesn't get translated into the system.

Does crime pay? Well in New Zealand it does! :shifty:

Yes, too bloody many of them!
That's the reason for the first quote on this post! :Pokey: Criminals feel safe because of them! :brick: (IMHO)

I think it is a great idea. Would be beneficial to talk to a lawyer if you are really worried but I would think that as long as you are not putting up their real name, unless they have been convicted, then it is just a photo or description of something dodgy looking/happening.
Would also consider a place to put up stolen bikes and VINS/frame/engine numbers, then people could search before they buy a "good deal"
Give me a yell if you want a hand, have been known to design a few database programs in my short life. But get in quick before I'm out of here.

100% agree with that sentiment Hemex. Things need to change. Boils me up reading about stolen bikes and the poor bastards who've had their lives violated. You'd likely have big probs doing anything beyond a basic list of bike details/where stolen from etc unfortunately. The police should be doing this though, they are collecting all this info anyway and it should be online for little trouble or expense. WTF?
I got rozzer stopped, pulling onto Motorway on way to Sandpit last weekend. Several cops stopping everyone doing wof/reg check. Same old frustrating story, checking paper labels on cars. A pity they weren't going around their crim list looking in a few likely garages. The cops know who a lot of these scumbags are.

What about a database of bike serial numbers?
have to be very secure or it would be a shopping list for bike thieves!!

I would just do it, a couple of reasons to support..
1. its a photo or description of SUSPICIOUS behavior being posted
2. If they are involved in criminal involvement they are hardly going to pursue legal avenues against a neighborhood watch type db.

The cops in South Africa account for part of the crime as well!! Stopping innocent cars and asking for payment to not arrest them on a jumped up charge is pretty common practise over there!!! It happens!!

Yeah the security could be worked upon fairly easily...
How would this help though? Everyone SHOULD know their serial numbers, not at their finger tips but somewhere handy...
It would help when buying a bike and checking the serial number against this databse...we could backtrack from there...
Much like doing an online check for cars/road bikes...

Exactly what I was thinking...its like a neighbourhood watch...just for the whole of the country ;)... Pictures, descriptions should be alright as long as no names are mentioned....

Sad thing is, they could bring 20 of their cousins and come storm my house, but the minute I fire up the grinder gun and launch the thing into their fat asses, I'd get done and sent to jail... Don't want jail, my friends dad said the inmates there would beat me up every day and turn me into a lesbian!! :(

That's by far the lesser of the evils. What I mean is, would you rather be charged a small cash fee every now and then, or have no bike, or more likely, be dead?
The database thing sounds like a fine idea, apart from legal issues that is, and how the fucked up "justice" system has something of a soft spot for scumbags.

Interesting that any suggestion of contacting the authorities is dismissed.
We collectively have faith that the police will tax us out of existence should we put a foot wrong on the road, however expecting them to find our stolen motorcycles is met with dismissive scepticism.

Pictures and descriptions would need to be done by me and not a free upload I guess? If it were free, that would allow ANYONE to chuck whatever they wanted on... WOuld it be a problem if the faces and plates were recognised?

Okay if you are not familiar with the concept of server-side creation of dynamic images then like you suggested what you could have is a clientside WYSIWYG webpage with editing features so the dobber can mask out areas before s/he uploaded them. In this way you have nothing to do with it and like someone else said it is then like a forum. But remember the trouble Google maps had with paranoid people requesting their letterboxes removed. Of course you have no way of qualifying/verifying each uploaded image and posting as per the example (and reason) for the image I posted at the start of this thread. So yeah it might just be back to the manual and tedious process for some data input jockey to do. At least you might have a pretty skirt sitting in your office with you?
