Saw just why it is good to have your lights on this morning.
Out for a pre-work blat this cold and frosty morning. Sun was just over the horizon. Reasonable amount of traffic on SH3, just south of The Tron.
Rounding a LH bend and coming the other way is a GN or somesuch without any lights. Well he was pretty much invisible - I only saw the reflector of his headlight for a split second as he rounded towards me. Against the background of hedges bordering the road etc in the early morning light, he was very well camouflaged.
I'd rather be seen meself...

Later noticed a different bike parked beside the roundabout at Ohaupo Rd, Tomin Rd roundabout...attended by LEO's and an ambo...bike didn't look too badly damaged. Hope the same can be said for the rider...

My headlight can't be turned off. Has lead to a habit of driving with headlights on too...

Seems to work! Don't get cut off nearly as much.

I think that many road bikes have their headlights permanently on now.

Not see a bike without lights on in a long time.

Lights off = blown bulb .

I often see tractor (harley)riders without lights on down this way....still believe it should be compulsory for all road user's to have lights on

Yer, well my lights are hard wired...

My lights are wired to go on with the ignition, which is good, as though i was pretty diligent at checking when i had my 250 that they were on, the odd occasion especially early morning riding i would forget. I think it is better to ride with a light on, I try and be considerate to other road users and give them a chance to see me.

Mine are permanently on too, although I think in my case it's because the lever has been broken off

Ever thought that running with lights on encourages people to look ONLY for lights - and then say that because you didn't have lights on - they couldn't see you:mad:

DRL's have been proven to work - but only when used by most/all.

Well, you main brightest light is in the front of your bike - so people would only see it in there rear view mirror. And if you hit them from behind ...

some countries have made it compulsory to have DRL's.
theres a reason so many motorcyclist and scooter riders are advocates for DRL's, they increase your visibility greatly, if they didn't work, why would we harp on about it?

That would seem to be a problem only for the people who don't have their lights on. I am not one of those people. :innocent:

I find as I'm riding along I tend to notice cagers who have their lights on (during the day) more often. It could be some subconsious thing that associates headlights during the day with bikes, so I'm always on the lookout.

My headlights are permanently on.

I always ride with my lights on and even on occasions during the day, especially low sun behind me, will ride with my High Beam on. Not when following other vehicles closely but I figure that it will be more obvious to other drivers and if it irritates them, at least they can see me!!!

A sort of "double blind" effect for the cager huh..?

i think alot of bikes/scooters have there light permanantly on now because its becoming a safety feature but i think drivers could get annoyed by lights being on not sure what do you guys think

Afew years ago I did a "Petes Postie: run around Tauranga for a few months. The Hi Viz vests we had to wear made us stand out far more than the scooter lights ( which are usually mounted quite low on scooters anyway). Logic would suggest that Hiz Visibility coloured helmets would stand out like dogs balls, but who would wear one??

I have always ridden with my lights on so it has never worried me.

We noticed around the Raglan area on holiday last week that there are signs everywhere along the lines of "lights on - at all times" - not a legal sign but more of a suggestion. I might chuck the job in and by me an automotive battery shop up there... kah-ching!:niceone:
