I'm getting really sick and tired of riding/driving down motorways in good weather conditions when the road is in good order with cagers driving 80kmh in front of me. Or being in an 80 zone behind someone doing 65kmh, and these selfish bastards think they own the roads and refuse to let traffic past. If people have an old car that can't reach 100kmh, or towing a trailer, then that's fine if they want to travel at 80kmh as long as they pull over and let people past. I wonder how many crashes can be attributed to people overtaking dangerously because they were fed up with being stuck behind a slow driver. And the cops don't seem to want to target these idiots.

Splitting or filtering at any speed is dangerous enough let alone at 80+ kph

Its not always possible, and depends on situation and experience of the rider to where he is comfortable spliting.

He is also right slow drivers that purposely drive that slow are a hazard.

It's not that they don't know you're there... The other week I was driving back from Auckland and got stuck behind someone doing about 70 in the 100 zone coming down past the Te Kauwhata turn off. I patiently drove a reasonable distance behind but when we got to the two lane expressway part, he drove right in the middle of the two lanes so I couldn't use either lane to get past :angry2: I flicked my headlights at him to ask him to choose a lane and he jams on the brakes! Far out! He eventually moved to the left so I drove past with my hand on the horn. The cars behind me saw what happened so did the same
Grrrr... sorry, that was just a vent post

I call these people the Self-Appointed Speed Nazis.

I think their thought process goes like this:

"Tra la la what a lovely day.
I feel that the safest speed on this road is 80km/h.
Road engineers who have decided that the limit should be 100 are clearly homicidal maniacs.
Hmm, a vehicle is approaching me quickly from behind. I wonder if that person is aware of the "safe" limit on this road?
He appears to be in a hurry. That's a sure-fire way to cause an accident on this road.
Well, he wont learn if I just move out of his way. He needs a firm controling hand to guide him to the error of his ways."

What pisses me off is people with 'sportscars' that can't take a corner without braking and then fail to accelerate to 100kmh by the end of an onramp. Just like the poser in the Porsche GT3 that took exception to me passing him on two lane onramp, when i wasn't really making an effort to get to merging speed. He then accelerated up behind me and tailgated me with high beams. Funnily enough his efforst to piss me off just made me laugh which in turn made him more angry. I found it hard to believe that my 1.8L 4speed automatic Volvo S40, out cornered and out accelerated a Porsche GT3. Kinda like having a hot missus and not fucking her.

PAH!!! I call poo on that one... I've had 4 people in the last year pull into my lane when i've been along side them... and the Prila and it's open cans ain't exactly quiet...

Totally agree, I usually give people a break over the weekend as they maybe train it during the week, but during the week it's a different story... and it's usually because the people in the cage are chatting or on phones or eating breakfast or putting on makeup and generally just aren't paying attention to driving...

Yes pass maybe... but for fark sake think before you do it, do it in a safe manner, (not just pass and just do it)... there is usually a reason it is a 50 or 80 k zone... hidden drive ways or connecting roads with blind corners for those that are pulling out (in front of you)... kids chasing the ball onto the road... what ever...

It is the idiots who keep changing lane without warning that fark me off.

An indicator is designed to provide an indication to other road users as to the drivers intentions.

It is a NOT facility to inform on what the driver is actually already doing.

Time you went back under your bridge like a good troll...

I drive a 30 year old classic car, not only does it take 10 minutes to get up to speed but the speedo is so old it can vary by up to 30km on any given day. Generally I avoid the motorway - however my car will normally only manage 80-90 kmph, even less when going up a hill.

I always use the left lane UNLESS I need use another due to exit/mway split etc.

I often get cars and bikes tailgating me - my response? Well I slam on my brakes. How dare they endanger ME by tailgating. They are perfectly capable of overtaking me in a safe manner but most choose to display their lack of testicles by overtaking dangerously close, fast and normally exceeding the speed limit.

Remember - it is a LIMIT not a f*cking TARGET. If I want to travel at 80kmph on the mway it is MY RIGHT as a fellow road user to do so.

As a motorcyclist - you should be more than able to overtake safely. Unless your on a GN or an idiot. I've yet to decide which.

What on earth are you doing rolling a cigarette and drinking tea while driving?? Woah, did you take your "exaggeration pills" today? Flames? Really? Weaving? Hardly. I know how to drive in a safe manner - I also know how to brake quickly and effectively in a vehicle with only drum brakes. I hope you can.

The varied attitudes - particularly young vs old regarding 'safe' driving and 'courteous' driving are clearly different. What is not clear is why you and 99% of drivers seemingly think you have 'more right' to be on the road than anyone else. It is an inherent flaw in NZ driving culture which has been compounded by such posts as yours and several others in this thread.

If you wish to travel faster than I am... feel free to make use of the other 3 f*cking lanes that usually make up a mway and overtake.

I think you will find that the majority of these road slugs are the ones that crow aboiut never having had an accident in 40 years of driving. I have said it before but I believe that the defacto speed limit on the open road in NZ is 80kph. Not often you get to travel legally at 100 these days.

Case in point. Last week I had to take my daughter to hospital in Hamilton, we had to be there before 7:30am. As I live in Warkworth I had an early start, I left home at 4:10am. After driving the 8 ks to the start of the northern motorway I set my cruise control for the sedate pace of 107, GPS tested to actually be 100 kph and headed south. The cruise control came off when I came to the 80kph area on the outskirts of Gordonton, just north of Hamilton. There was almost no other cars on the road, and all the trucks were heading to Auckland, I got there in under 2 hours. Did not exceed the speed limit once.

Coming home, left at 6pm. Travelled the same route home. Did not even get to 80 kph until I got onto SH1 at Taupiri, tried to set the cruise again, but it was impossible as the very light traffic at that time of night down there was creeping along at 80. I expected to be slower throught the city and I was a little bit, but once throught the traffic areas I did expect to stay at 100 again, nope. The trip home took a tad over 2.5 hours.

Well said. 10 years of driving for me - not a single accident (as long as you dont count a couple of mbike accidents involving no other people).

Overtaking a car and zooming along far to quickly and often exceeding the speed limit will not actually get you there any quicker. Perhaps 10-20 seconds at the most... really not worth the life of another or yourself.

If your running late - why should others be put at risk because you was too disorganized?

I am not sure why you directed this at me mate. However as you have, I dont as a rule ever zoom along far too quickly, and rarely exceed the speed limit. I dont think I am particularly disorganised either, remember my time frames, had to be there 7:30, left at 4:10. Now even allowing for my failed maths skills I left 3.75 hours to make a 2.5 hour trip.

I have a huge tolerance for other road users and their ancient, smokey old bombs and have never, ever tailgated them or made an unsafe passing manouver either.

I can however, see that some might get really frustrated and do that. Meh, dont drive on main arterial routes at 20 or better kph under the speed limit is my response. Find another route, or upgrade your vehicle. If you can do neither, then get up to speed and drive.

No you don't. You drive an old BMC Mini.

But, a clapped out one apparently

Top speed of the very first Issigonis Mini (with a breathtaking 33bhp ) was 70mph. That's around 115kph. Mini Cooper 1275S , 97 mph (155kph).

Indeed, however at that speed the engine is not near it's redline (you cannot reach redline in top gear due to aerodynamics limiting the top speed). What does limit the speed is the amount of oil that begins to pass through the rings creating a rather nasty smoke cloud behind me.. I would much prefer to have a working engine than one that has blown up because of it's age.

Generally when you go fast you tend to catch up with other traffic so you have to slow down..speed up later and so on so you are right Mum you generally don't get there much quicker.

Back in UK is used to visit my mate in Wolverhampton..I used to leave for London about 2am on the Monday..after 4 pints of coke...what I found was that if I cruised at 90mph I got tired quicker (in a car) - due to concentration levels so I decided to cruise at 75/80 moph so I was overtaking pulling back in etc and it took me not a lot longer to get home..even going through London and I was not feeling sleepy

there is usually a reason it is a 50 or 80 k zone... ..

The 80km/h ones are there to catch people speeding. For instance, from Orewa to Matakana. No reason at all for it to be an 80 on the open parts, apart from the ginga cop to nick people above the artificially low limit.

The most incredibly frustrating thing happened today.

Headed to Glenfield via Kaipatiki, and managed to get stuck behind some cum-fart doing 30-35k's the whole way. This street being notoriously hilarious to drive past, because there are often boi-racer cars parked there with noone in them, I decided not overtaking would be smart.

Lo and behold, there was a policeman just pulling out of the timber place just before the bridge. Putting along, thinking 'Hot damn, this guy better get the woopwoops!'
Sure enough "WOOP WOOP", and there is me pulling to the side to let him pass. Pulls up right behind me! THE FUCK!

"Hey, just thought I'd let you know you were following the gentleman in front a bit too closely."
'No disrespect intended, but he was doing about 30k's in a 50k area. Shouldn't he be in trouble for impeding traffic?'
"My concern is the safety of you, who happened to be traveling too close."
'Well, thanks.'

And YES it does cause people to overtake and take risks.

GOOD JOB - But have you learnt your lesson? I doubt it by the looks of your post.

Remember - if a small child ran out in front the car in front will brake hard, if your too close you could not only hit the car in front but cause both of you to hit the child...

Keep your distance - oh and not everyone has brake lights that work 100% of the time either ;)

What pisses me off are people that do 80kms in a 100km zone then get to a passing lane and speed up to 120kms!!!!! very frustrating!!! If i have to drive slow for some reason, ie: towing trailor etc I always find the next pull over area to let people past if i'm holding up traffic. Its not hard to be courteous to other road users.

Bloody oath to that. Also if the older drivers(over 70)want to drive on highways the testing people should take them to an open road/highway and see if they can drive comfortably at 100km os close to it,not 65km and go to 95km on passing lanes.

But with the camber on our main roads if towing a trailer/caravan or in a truck, the ability to pull over safely isn't always easy.

If someone has a half decent car which is clearly capable of safely travelling at 100kmh for a sustained length of time, and road and weather conditions are good, but that driver is uncomfortable travelling at 100kmh, then they shouldn't really be driving should they?

If I get the chance to safely overtake someone who is doing something like 80kmh in a 100 zone for no apparent justifiable reason, then I go 60kmh in front of them so they can see how it feels. And then they always seem to tailgate me for some reason.Example 1.

I often get cars and bikes tailgating me - my response? Well I slam on my brakes.Example 2.

I'm getting really sick and tired of riding/driving down motorways in good weather conditions when the road is in good order with cagers driving 80kmh in front of me. Or being in an 80 zone behind someone doing 65kmh, and these selfish bastards think they own the roads and refuse to let traffic past.Example 3.

What is the common theme? Really, the examples don't need to be numbered do they. The issue is peoples belief sets, and consequently their emotional state becoming out of order and then taking deliberate and violent action against some other individual, on the basis that they have just cause.

It would be no different if someone pushed through a car through in a dangerous fashion - their actions put everyone at risk, simply on the basis of their emotional state.

The most dangerous of people, are the ones who believe, that when they feel angry can take some violent action against another human being. There is a large difference between feeling impatient and passing, and feeling angry and ramming someone with a car.

I've driven commercially for tens of thousands of hours, and quite seriously I am thoroughly bored with it.. All I want on the road in a car, is to be left the fuck alone. I keep my distance, adjust my music, and sit back well below the speed limit and relax. Any clown who wants to pass can go for it - I don't care - I move over for them and let them go. If they want to follow too closely well that doesn't ACTUALLY affect me.

Biking is different, little gaps are useful ways ahead. I use them. Boo hoo hoo.

I would be seriously impressed if the "authorities" abandoned the SPEED KILLS nonsense and heavily promoted KEEP LEFT!
QFT
I drive between North Shore and Ellerslie a few times a week and it amazes me how many people just sit in the right hand lane 10kmh below the speed limit. Actually managed to sit on the left lane and overtake about 10 cars over about 5 k's because NO ONE was using it.

Enforcing the use of indicators and changing lanes when there is space would also be good. Although the number of times I've had cars actually speed up to cut me off when I start indicating is worrying.

There just seems to be a general mentality that sloppy driving is OK if I'm doing it, but if some sod wants to get in my lane/overtake/use the same road then it's time to get all angry and agressive with nascar tactics. The sad thing is it's catching. Everyone hates it when other people do it but take a minute and think, do you tailgate? Indicate for three seconds (or even 2)? speed around blind corners? Essentially do anything we are harrassing car drivers for in this thread?

Oh and I have a thirty year old 998 mini city, it's a neat little thing and the engines been tough as nails, BUT I make sure I'm matching the speed of traffic on those occasions I take it on the motorway. If I can't do the speed limit up a mild hill on a single lane road I know it's time to get out the spanner!

When caging, I regard myself as a very poor driver. I keep thinking "what can I do better". I keep left, indicate, etc... unlike 99% of kiwi drivers who think they are shit-hot drivers who would put Schumacher or Brock to shame.

It very nice of you to ask if I had learned my lesson, then proceed to tell me that I haven't. :niceone:

Remember - If a 1500kg car can brake hard enough for a motorbike 10m back doing 30k's (If I did not slow down at all) to hit his ass, my inertia is going to do diddly squat to him. There are situations where a bike WOULD do diddly squat, but I'm assuming speed was a large part of it.

If their cars do not have working brake lights, they are driving in a vehicle unfit for the road, whether or not they are aware.

You boring old farts (even the young ones)

Coming home, left at 6pm. Travelled the same route home. Did not even get to 80 kph until I got onto SH1 at Taupiri, tried to set the cruise again, but it was impossible as the very light traffic at that time of night down there was creeping along at 80. I expected to be slower throught the city and I was a little bit, but once throught the traffic areas I did expect to stay at 100 again, nope. The trip home took a tad over 2.5 hours.

2.5 hours isn't too bad

It takes me that long to get to KKK from Hamilton - but I avoid the main routes wherever possible because I have a problem with falling asleep from the tedium.:zzzz:

The levels of sanctimony in NZ should probably be measured like smog in LA.

It can't be good for us

You are the sweet, generous, emphatetic kind of guy woman always want, eh?

I think we've recently established that women do not, at least no always, want what they say they want. ...anyway, what you are suggesting certainly isn't it.

There just isn't enough of me to go around.

I guess people, unlike motorcyclists, will just need to learn how to queue.

Oh yes, someone please make a virus that will kill all these slow fuckers!

And the cops don't seem to want to target these idiots.

i was comming home from racing in the tarawera 100 on saturday and we got stuck behind a motorhome doing 55K/H. they never used the slow vehicle lanes, they didnt pull over and let the huge line of backed up traffic pass. you could see them looking in their mirror so they knew what was happening. now i dont usually get road rage but that really pissed me off. a few swears out the winndow, highbeam lights, and honks of the horn later and we finally got passed:spanking::spanking::Pokey:
