View Full Version : Getting the rear wheel off the ground

So I'm rapidly discovering the downsides to not having a centrestand, after spending a fair amount of time cleaning the GB250's chain (though having the 2nd exhaust in the way doesn't help). Being a 250 single it requires a fair bit of chain maintenance.
So basically I need a way of getting the rear wheel of the ground so that I can spin it when needed. Chain maintenance needs to be much less of a chore.
Paddock stand? Jack? Cheaper option?

paddock stand is gonna be the best idea. if the bike is light and you got a tiedown and a rafter in the shed then.................
paddock stands are fairly cheap nowadays
Cheaper option?
A mate to tip it off the rear wheel while it is on the side stand?

You pretty much already listed the best options. Paddock stand is the best idea, wish some bikes you can slip a jack under the swingarm on the opposite side to the sidestand and get the wheel up without anything jamming. Or lift under the bottom of the shock (if she's a mono-shock).
Do you have a carport or garage? Block & tackle from the ceiling around the swingarm on the right-hand side, put her on the centre stand and gently lift the wheel off the ground. Not too high, just enough that you can turn the wheel.
Or maybe a really big stoppie? ;)
very nice pic of a propped bike
Did you have to pay heaps to get that special tool made?

Do them deck stand things come in different sizes ? think my bike might be slightly heavier so i think a slightly heavier guage of material might be the go !
mmmm now all i need is the right decking timber to wedge it into !

Sounds like a paddock stand is the best idea (with the piece of wood coming a close second), hopefully the bike shop have them when I'm there next. I don't want to get one off the internet as I think my rear (drum) brake might get in the way of the stand. How thick are the rubber bits that the swingarm sits on?
