OK here's a thread (maybe a sticky if it takes off?) for people to use when ordering bits and pieces from O'seas. It might save freight (which lets face it can be pretty a big part of the cost) if a couple others were wanting to get bits too.
Websites like Electrex World, Thumpertalk, Wemoto etc etc...(all of which I recently used and thought in hindsight I should have asked around).
The idea is that you post if you're looking to order and are willing to have somone piggyback your order. PM's can sort out freight / costs sharing etc. Not a thread for gasbagging and high fives, just cutting deals.

Not too sure if the postage\shipping is that prohibitive.
Recently I broke my gear lever. Suzuki GS 1200 SS
Went to Suzuki dealer and was quoted $125 for a replacement.
Went online and found a UK site willing to supply both gear and brake levers, anodised and posted for $100.
So I wait a week longer for the parts.

Now I might be miles out here....isn't there a $ value above which GST is charged on imported goods, something like $400? I have done little importing myself but recall something about this when I brought in a gas tank which got close to this value. It would be well worth checking before going to far.
Other than that, it sounds a great idea but watch the money so no one "forgets" to pay.

The $400 figure is correct, and freight or postage is included in the valuation. However it seems to depend on the mood in customs, as I have had several things with a value higher than this through with no problem, but I do sometimes have to pay. No big hassle though. I just figure the best way is to not sweat it, and pay when you need to. Still works out way cheaper, even with the GST at times.
Even better is to fill your bags when you travel. The US is great for selection and price!
However. When you need something urgently from your dealer, it is better to know him. I try and support them when they do good deals, but often overseas is very hard to turn away. Less than half usually gets my attention pretty fast.
Lots more second hand parts available overseas as well, and pretty easy to fudge the value if needed.

Here's a tip:
I use http://www.buyusa.co.nz/
You pay a small annual fee and they give you an address in the USA. You have the goods shipped to the USA (very good for those annoying restricted items) and then pay your bill.
Buy USA will consolidate your order into a shipment to NZ, arrange the Customs clearance if required and bill you what is due. Then they courier the item/s to your address in NZ.
I've found it useful if you get a few items together with friends and as mentioned, many of those used items on eBay etc that will only ship to the USA can now be bought.
Give it a try
That said though, don't ignore your local suppliers. use this as a last resort and support NZ jobs.

Be careful with Buyusa. Their shipping costs are very high.
The last time I was going to import a part, I ended up buying locally as the small saving was not worth the hassle.

yep, shipping costs CAN be high and that's why it still pays to combine orders if you can.
Good Idea. I recently got some wolfman stuff from Australia.......
(Waits for Robert Taylor to chime in about NZ jobs......)

Nice one Nordie, I already have his ignition guard but at the time of purshase Perry didn't have the clutch one yet.
Looks like I'll be making another order with him soonish.
He delivered within a week on my first purshase IIRC.

I have a number of good contacts in the US and can get stuff sent on no worries, have done it a number of times now.
Something to keep in mind anyway, I am nearly done buying goodies, gunna make my own bash plate and wonna buy a set of structural bark buster with designa yello guards, pretty much set then.

Yeah, I'm quite fortunate to have family over there so occasionally forward goods to them and once enough has been collected they stuff into a box and send via the slow boat. Huge savings, and if they clip tags and remove packaging, can come through as gifts or used goods. Pain in the butt just needing one or two small items and being charged US$35 for sending via a mailer (like a doohickey kit...). Effen robbery.

When I got my panniers etc thru the States I had no problems with GST.
The last stuff I bought, which was when I realised I might have to be careful about GST, I asked them to put a lower dollar value on the invoice, which they did! (I had already paid for the goods)

I will be placing an order this week from USA for a Garmin GPS Ram mount....from an outfit called MountGuys.com. (Sounds very gay, but they offer good international service).
These will be half the price of getting them here in NZ, and I don't want to risk losing/breaking my GPS by scrimping using an aftermarket or homemade mount that don't do the job proper like. The biggest problem seems to be excessive vibration with homemade jobs.
As an example, for my GPSMap 60CSX, the complete mount and cradle is $50 USD including post.... at the current exchange rate this works out to be around $80 NZD, very cheap. They also have all the good accessories, like power hardwires, various mount styles, (handlebar, clutch reservior, or steering stem).
Here's a couple of sample pics....
Let me know if anyone wants to combine an order.
Cheers

Placed my order last week, the GPS Ram mount arrived in 6 days from USA. Cost $44 USD incl post (with a 10% promo discount), so that's $64 NZD!
Tried it out on the bike already, it's rock solid and worth every penny.
I highly recommend these guys.

FYI
There are usually no GST charges from goods with invoice < $400 NZ.
There may be more charges laid on you if the goods invoice > $1000 NZ.
I just imported some bits from the USA, around 5kg worth and value under $1000 NZ. Ended up paying 38% of the cost price in freight/GST/Customs Fees e.t.c.
Still worked out being about half the price of what I'd have to pay to buy similar goods locally. The other advantage is that the USA has an amazing range of parts to choose from, especially for cruisers.

I'm placing an order tonight at WEMOTO. PM me if you want to piggyback any stuff onto it. Placing by 8pm tonight. New seat cover for the AT, roller headbearing set to replace the antique ball and cup. and a couple of speedo drive cogs...f*cken plastic bits of rubbish they are...and expensive at that.
I will pay up front and split out the parts plus NZ freight for anyone who wants to piggy back. Amount payable will be confirmed when I get the final invoice on arrival and match it against my visa conversion, then adding your NZ freight to it. and being KB'ers we all know we don't screw each other.

There are websites in the US that you can set up an account that allows you to ship orders there and then redirect them to NZ. I think it only costs about $10 per year to have it. Can't remember for the life of me the web address, but Dr google might help there

Eddie, I've used www.comgateway.com for a number of US orders. My 18l KTM tank cost about US$360 to send to NZ. All up the tank purchased and delivered to NZ was about $800 vs $1300 to buy locally. Took around a fortnight to arrive after placing my order. Cheers

Yep, comgateway are good. Last time I used them it was US$25 for the first 1/2 kg then US$7 per 1/2 kg after that. (volumetric weights of course) They have no annual charges or subscription or anything, very straightforward, they ship via DHL which is usually pretty quick.
Cheers
