How BIG??????

Or just a small pecker of a quake :2guns:

oldrider

Well, things were swinging wildly around in the house, like hanging plants etc.

Daughter never felt anything in Temuka though!

I have been in plenty of quakes and this one was quite a good one but not nasty shocks just really swaying about.

Went on for quite a while too, oh well it's all quiet again now. (I hope)

Funny thing is I just said to Mrs O the other day that we haven't had an earthquake for a while, she went apeshit! :shifty::shit::sick: Oh well!

Our house wobbled pretty well with lights swinging about 300 - 400 mm, we got out quickly but no damage to us, be interesting to see what comes out of the woodwork :shit:.

Interesting we couldn't here a thing but it went on for about a minute and a half to two minutes, blind crahcing back and forth etc.

We are prepped for a biggy, fresh water, tent handy and some food etc, not a silly idea if you haven't already got something together.

Wow! Tsunami warning??! I know it's standard procedure for a biggy, but I seriously hope nothing comes of it...that would not be fun.

Still watching the seismic drums at geonet.org.nz and it doesn't look like it has even stopped yet. there is just a continuous band of blue marking with sections of red where the original quake occurred and the "aftershocks" that have come since then. image makes it look like the quake is still going.... in fact on the Wanaka drum you can see the two different lines the current timestamp being partially obscured by previous hour's markings...

Bloody lucky it was centred in a fairly remote area, according to the Richter scale 6-6.9 is classed as 'strong' and can be destructive up to a radius of 160km. :eek5: Apparently fairly shallow too, which I gather is not a good thing either...

Yes, it was pretty strong here in North Otago, oldrider. First thing I noticed was lights in the windows, as if a car had just pulled up outside- but then realised it was the glass flexing in the frames! Stained glass ornaments in the windows swinging, the door moved open about a foot, and the fireplace poker in its stand swung back and forth for quite a while.

Twas merely a gentle rolling motion in Murchison
I was just sitting down to roast Chook, & as with all quakes I wonderd, wether it was going to get worse...
Hope not to much damage

Didn't feel it. but noticed things wobbling in the house in New Plymouth.

I'll second that. Gentle swaying for a minute or so in the Naki at 9.28pm, so it took 6 minutes for it to travel up here.

Been out checked the garage (Tiger purring contentedly) , thought there was a bump during quake but nothing untoward anywhere. :ride: OK

The Tiger said just as well Ruralmans KTM had gone home, it was a bit of a sook and would have been afraid! :blip:

They've now upgraded it to a 7.8 from the 6.6 originally reported - more than 10 times stronger. At 5km deep that's a real grunter.

On the news they are taking flight over Fiordland to see the damage, it will have left some big scares you would think.

One thing about living near a sandy beach is it all goes like jelly in a good quake. The old house did some fairly loud creaks and cracks last night, depite the fact we are over 900km from the epicentre!

Interesting comments by Ken Ring of PredictWeather.com this morning in that the current lunar and planetary alignments are conducive to earthquake activity worldwide for the next week or so.
In short some significant lunar event that happened yesterday will be followed by continued contributing planetary events up until a lunar eclipse on July 22nd which will maximise gravitational influences (and earthquake likelyhood) at that time.

Lunacy or reason for caution?:corn:
