was changing the oil last night and before i done it i took the bike for a spin to heat her up.
when i came back it was about 7pm
the bike was still running and my boy came out and wanted to rev it he twisted the throttle big time and flames came out the muffler its a neptune muffler.
is this normal.
or did i just notice it because it was getting dark and i was looking at the muffler end?
its an 86 jappa import and had 96 in it

yeah its just unburned fuel finding ignition in the exhaust system, might go into my garage now and see if it does the same.......

yeah i have to admit i did get a bit excited.
i felt like riding in new plymouth or a set of lights and rev the shite out of it in front of the cars.
the flames were pretty cool, came out a fair way.

Oh,way cool man! You gunna do the main street of Opunake tonight?
That's what baffles are for - could be a tad rich with an air leak,or a tad lean. Most bikes of that era were set up real lean to pass emission tests, things get worn and they go even leaner (your mixture screw is only a fine adjustment, not full control) Put open pipes on these and they snap crackle and pop all over the place.

so do i need to make it run richer or leave it.
havn't had any trouble from the ol pig yet.

I liked the "bang bang" as the GSXs and Katanas backed off for sweeper at the end of Puke front straight.

If it's rich it will need a supply of oxygen to burn (no oxygen left, that's why it's rich and has unburnt fuel),so check for air leaks first, then move onto mixtures.Trouble is it's a multi cyl multi carbed bike - so one cyl may be rich, another lean,so supplying the oxy, really a carb sync is in order.

Flames are COOL - Fact.
My TL used to blow 12inch flames out both mufflers when she hit the limiter, farkin kick arse at night, amused many a boy racer, but alas i held the limiter a little too often and it dropped the valves on the front head.
Dosen't explain the second time it happened :spudwhat:

My bike does it to! Our garage is under the living room, very thin floor, flatmates thought bike was a little loud.... :ride:

When I was developing a bucket motor it used to have visible flames down the throat of the carb at about 6000rpm on the dyno. Needless to say it wasn't running too well at that speed. Something to do with piston relief around the gudgeon pin and a really wide exhaust port and not much ignition advance.

Sounds like there must be unburnt fuel getting through. Might be needing a tune...
