Been feeling pretty sick for the last week with a cold/flu thing but been soldiering through it - as ya do.
Finally went to the doctors this morning, doctor took one listen to my lungs & promptly gave me a huge telling off for not coming in sooner and for potentially spreading the oink flu by taking the Harden Up approach to being sick.
Result: some pretty awesome drugs and a doctors note keeping me off work until at least Monday

While I can understand people doing this, it's dumb. (Having said that, you're often very infectious before your symptoms become bad enough for you to decide you're sick).
My last boss would go to work unless he was actually unable to get out of bed. One of our managers is SO important he went to Oz despite being quite sick, and took panadol and splashed his face with cold water on the plane to try to avoid the heat scanners in Melbourne airport picking him out, so he wouldn't get quarantined for a week. Then he came to work and spread his lurgy around.
Charming.
And selfish.
Anyway - I hope you get more betterer young Miss L., so being sick doesn't mess up your weekend too badly.

I understand what you are saying. However, sometimes you just can't afford (financially) to take the time off. With a family - you don't always have time left for yourself to use. Sick days used to look after sick kids, holidays gone etc. Taking a week of to get better with no pay can be pretty devastating to some families.

I generally try and fight my way through the first flu of the season. Its mostly pretty mild and I don't get sick again for the rest of the year!
But with this oink flu around I'd probably get it checked if I got sick around now!

Exactly. I'm a normally healthy person so I figured no big deal, just take some cold&flu pills, plenty of water & rest and I'd get over it quickly

The head chef at the restaurant I've been working at as a kitchen hand had a go at me for not coming in to work when I was sick, despite having a medical certificate saying that I shouldn't be at work for at least two days.
An hour after I got home from work on Friday I was really sore in all my joints, had a killer headache which was making me feel drunk, and I had a really bad cough. Apparently it's ok to work in a kitchen coughing and spluttering over the food, and also in a condition where you can barely walk straight in the first place. His opinion was 'you just need to be stronger, NZ doctors only make you more sick'... He's Albanian and has been working with a sore throat/cough since I started there.

I think there need so be a culture change to sickness in New Zealand, first increase in number of sick days (no good for self-employed and small business, I know).
If you come into work to soldier on and get two people sick who go off then it was all for nothing.
There have been studies done that if you do go in you stay sick for longer and as you are less productive when your there, overall you actually contirbute less, plus there's the possibility of the above.

There also needs to be a change in culture with seeing "sick leave" as needing to be taken every year.
I scratch my head when employees come to me asking "how many sick days they have left". WTF you going to be sick tomorrow then ah?
Get well soon Miss.L.

What's the point of being sick if I can't come to work and infect everyone here? Who's gonna cough into the air conditioning vents if not me?

I hate taking sick leave, but both me and my wife have been really unwell for the last 2 weeks - it is not like us to be like this. I am still going to my main job, but my second job (flying) is not happening as I can't handle the g loadings and rapid altitude changes.
she works at a large hospital, and visits rural hospitals, i work in an industry that moves the great unwashed, (and people who refuse to stay at home when they have infectious illnesses) around the world.......
3 guys at my work are at home with confirmed swine flu. one was in hospital. most of the guys on the floor are carrying some kind of bug at the moment. only mitigating factor is that we work outside, not in confined offices

Funny you should mention this but...
I believe we share the same bug, I thought I was doing ok, but have gone down hill over the past 48 hours. I rang my doctors this morning and tried to make an appointment, fully book today, fully booked tomorrow, unless it was urgent.
Define urgent you stupid female? I am not in the habit of ringing to see a doctor unless I am sick! I got an appointment for 4:40 tomorrow afternoon. Friggen joke, by then the bugs will have a much better hold and no doubt I will feel shit loads worse.
Hope you feel better soon Miss L. I am picking I will start feel hunky dory again about Sunday evening.

I used to think when sore throat hit,ah well only throat, tried to talk myself out of the lurgi, another lady at work would be oh I have a wretched throat, would tell the boss looks like I'll be at the other shop tomorrow,he would say sore throat.
I never took sickleave unless really bad,a couple times the boss escorted me home, mind you my first job we had to have medical cert if we wanted to be paid,so also think my parents outlook on sickies even at school were part of it,noway would my brother and I take Friday off,as we weren't allowed to play sport Saturday, mind you come Monday we usually were crook as,and taken to nanas for rest which was great.Never took a sickie from over endulging on a Thursday night,or from a hard weekend.Even after work socials on Thursday nights, the boss leaving pissed at 1.30am and we're still going at it till 3am,the look when we turn up on time, vaguely awake was priceless.Him with shakes dry horrors,us spending heaps of time with Lion Red/Brown after effects, but saying why stay home and not get paid for 4hours(usually lunch finish),might as well be at work pissing off supervisor by all going at 1/4 speed, but getting paid for it.Then hitting piss again about 3pm Friday to talk about useless sad sack supervisor who was never allowed to party,he always had to go home.

I have the flu bad at the moment.
Thursday a week and half ago I wasn't to well so took day off work.
Friday was last day and drinky. Had to attend so hardened up and did the minimum 12hr drinking session (all free)
Think I might have made things worse. 10 days later still sick. Throat, temperatures and very tired.
The worst thing is its during my annual leave. GRR
Maybe I should get some meds next week.

Whooping cough is not funny. You will never forget it if you have it in your house. I did 1 child with it. Horrible times.
Before I get hammered about immunisation, we have an authentic reason to not immunise against Pertussis. There is nothing funny about hearing a kid cough, and cough and cough and wheeze and cough, and cough and wheeze and wheeze and gulp, and cough and cough and WHOOP some air, then vomit...
Daily, many times daily. For weeks, and weeks and months.
Get well Matt! Take your time and recover fully.
Much love to Mel and the rest of your lovely family.

Not sure which is worst. The coughing till you "whoop" and spew or the constant flu symptoms. Haven't been a whole day without a headache or sinus pain since the first week of August. Fevers in summer suck.
As an adult it's just wait six months and it will get better.
On the bright side neither of the girls have it. Not does Mel.
