cbr fuel tank/reserve tank

Hi,

Have only had the cbr250rr for about a month or maybe a bit more now, have run out of fuel twice on it - once was on the northern motorway - hit the reserve tank going 100kmph, flicked it over, and it lasted another 5km before running out (thankfully someone stopped:-P) Second time juts happened two days ago - ran out doing 60kmph, flicked to reserve and it did only another 2km!!! on the reserve tank before conking out. Thankfully I was 10m from a gas station...

Still...the reserve on a cbr250 is listed at 1.6L - I was keeping the revs about 7krpm so it shouldn't have run out that fast...Any ideas?
There is another fuel filter between the tank and the carbs that isn't standard, also there always seems to be a drip of petrol coming out of the bottom of the tank fuel tap? watching there's about one drip a minute..it seems to do about 16-17km/l which is a little low given I don't thrash it..
Any ideas why I could be running out so fast?

My understanding is that on Honda's the reserve kicks in at 80% capacity, so I think you should get more distance than that.

I had a CBR250RR that did that on me once. Turned out to be a leak in the fuel line from the tank. Are there any damp patches near the tank or along the fuel line?

Like I was saying there's that drip, and you can see it on the rear shock...haven't had a good look further since the tank is such a mish to get off...guess it could poss be leaking from around the fuel filter in the middle of the line?but wouldn't be able to check without undoing it when i take the tank off...

have you ever pulled apart the fuel tap bit? wondering if/how to stop the little dripping there...

I think you have found your own answer. You have to pull it apart and find the leak.

Yes take the tank off and have a look. Those fuel lines do rapture after a long time. There might be alot of gunk at the bottom of the tank.

I took the tank off, appears that the leak is coming from the seals (old o-rings) and the diaphragm in the fuel tap don't look so good. george the mc doctor says you can't get them any more, I tried some stuff from repco that they said (and the packet said) doesn't degrade in petrol...now its mostly all gone, some is stiting on the outside of my rear shock :-P.
While i was there I emptied the tank, sprayed some brake cleaner in and gave it a good shake till most of the liquid inside was out (???it was pretty much impossible to get everything out, even with the fuel tap off, just the tall bit that sits inside the tank still in there.

Any recommendations on what to do from here?still got a leak, haven't tested the reserve tank as of yet :-P

Try a bike wrecker.

Failing that, surely you could get another fuel tap fitted to the tank. After all, it is only a tap.

I've called atomic and corsa with no luck as of yet, any idea what ther kind of tap can be fitted?

What about getting a tap from a current model? Surely it can't have changed that much that it can't be fitted to the bike?

A current model? like a cbr600 or something? yeah I don't see why I have to have the standard mc22 tap if another one would fit - i asked the guy at tomic if it was possible to put another tap on and he didn't know...?

Hey , while your fluffing around with the tap, you might want to pull the wee filter tube out that sticks up into the tank itself.....you will be surprised at the ammout of gunk stuck to it.
You should be able to find an O-ring that'd work thats not OEM from someone that services Diesel pumps,alot of Diesels pre when they changed the mix,need the pumps pulled apart & O-rings replaced 'cause they fall to bits with the new recipe diesel.

I vaguely attempted to pull it out, gave up and just sprayed some brake cleaner down it before I drained it...hopefully that would have cleared any crap out?

I have an RR too and can do about 200km on a full tank (plus/minus depending on use ;)) without using the reserve, but I've heard the reserve is good for about 10-20km.
