What?

I know this has been answered on here before, but stuffed if I can find it;
Precisely what frequency Ka is used in NZ?
What other band frequency ranges are / have been used here??

Ka band is almost exclusively used, although I have detected the odd hawk (K band) around Te Kuiti and Thames a year or so back.
MOT and local body cops used to use X band.
There is a Ku band used in Europe, I'd be surprised if we see it here.

are you asking exactly what the frequency of ka is?

3rd one down

and...

Ka 33.4 - 36.0 GHz 0.35 - 0.33 in
9 - 8.3 mm 13 channels; 200 MHz/ch

thats it right? :niceone:

Oh I think X K KA and one more I forget.
Dick Smith sell them with X K KA and the saftey radar thingimyjig that doesnt work in NZ yet.

If you've ever got a mysterious K band signal that disappears as you pass a tractor, that's the safety warning system. John Deeres have it.

Cheers guys.
So I wrote to a few places, including Escort Radar, and made a few discoveries that back up what Lou and I have both said before - the NZ Pleece use exactly the same gear as do the US Pleece. There is no NZ spec Escort radar detector, and probably not any other brand either. The "official" importers are full of it...
And there is no "official" Escort distributor in NZ, as Escort tell me they only sell to US and legal Candian state markets.

Yeah...my 8500 X50 came straight from the States and works very well.:2thumbsup Only difference is that screen is angled to the left. Untill you come across a cop who is using Laser properly! Then just kiss ya arse goodbye.:angry2:

Possibly diffraction of light hitting the sensor. I was getting false alarms between hawea and Wanaka, I finally worked out that it was the sunlight hitting condensation on the bag I had over my detector.
The harbour bridge electronic signs also trigger mine.

Never had Ka alert off a tractor, are you sure it wasn't a Police tractor?

If Spud had one he could harvest his back paddock.

I knew it! Conspiracy!! Speeding fines really are being used to help cops harvest their kumaras. I'm gonna ring Paul Holmes about this, just you wait...

Many modulated light sources can cause false laser warnings:
Led warning signs on the motorway;neon signs etc

The NZ police were given SWS equipment free of charge by the manufacturer for use at accident scenes etc.(according to Donald Sawicki, author of the Traffic Radar Handbook,CopRadar.com)
Iwonder why they never used it?
Could it be that it would legitimise the use of radar detectors?
Most U.S. manufactured agricultural and earth moving equipment have SWS
transmitters
I got some useful warning of a tractor on the road around a bend prior to seeing it,recently via SWS.

Departing slightly off topic, I have often wondered if there would be any problems if a cop misdirected his laser gun thingy and got the laser beam in a riders eye(s).

Presumably OK in a cage (windscreen will filter it); and maybe a full face lid with visor. But an open face you could the laser right in the optics.

Eye damage ? temporary blindness causing crash ? or laser not powerful enough to have any effect ?

Anyone know ?

"SWS transmits any of 64 short text messages to SWS capable receivers(radar detectors)
Transmitters function in both mobile(emergency vehicles, school buses,slow/oversize vehicles)and stationary modes(Construction areas, dangerous stretches of road or area information)
SWS Transmitter
24.1 GHz, 50 mW, 23 degrees beamwidth
Non SWS capable radar detectors receive SWS messages as K band radar

Georga Tech Reseach Institute developed the system specifications as part of the Smart Highway Plan .
Safety Warning System,L.C. Is an organisation formed to develop and promote the system, and has donated transmitters to local and state governments and at least 3 countries (Russia,New Zealand and The Netherlands) as of 1998 "

Why don't they use this free equipement in N.Z.?
Road safety...BULLSHIT

Cop LADAR (Laser guns) use near infra-red lasers

correct.... so why does my escort with SWS not give the short txt when I pass a tractor... but instead get a k/ka signal???
Now I do remember reading these txt mesages some were (may be in hand book... buggered if I know where thats gone)

Doh..... found it, silly place to keep the hand book... in the detector case
64 SWS txt messages.... which one should a tractor be... slow moving vehicle ???

Bloody great idea...... why isent it in use? if fact you would think car manufactures would have it built into cars.

maybe your SWS is turned off? N.Z. spec detector?
the system is used in U.S.
Maybe N.Z. police haven't figured a way tom make money out of it.

P.S.
when local retailers say their radar detector are N.Z. spec,it usually means that they have turned off X-band, and to do this they entered a button sequence via the power switch and mute switch.
For this they justify their inflated prices.

If you prefer it, go for it.
I do not agree, however.

+1

They do the job! When we bought ours the guy at the shop disabled all other bands except the Ka band - he said that is the only band the police use for speeding enforcement. Enabling the other bands will just give false alerts.
