View Full Version : Dry crack and pain.

Hehe, not quite as bad as it sounds, really.
Everytime I do stuff on my bike, especially mixing pre-mix or other petrol related activities I end up with really dry hands and little cuts on my fingers..... Really sore!
Anyway I know I should wear gloves but never remember until it's too late. So does anyone have any suggestions of good hand cremes or other magic solution that can ease the pain of my dry cracks? Cheers.

I'd give up the pre-mix on the Hornet ..... its a 4 stroke !
Other than that, industrial gloves maybe the ticket :)

edit .. ok I guess u'r bucket maybe a 2stroker!! I'd still go withe the industrial gloves. Should be able to pick some up from NZ Safety :)

bunnings sell cheap latex gloves, bit pervy, but also good when cleaning ya harley, since wash/wax/cleaner/wd40 is all hard on girly hands. i know because i get paper cuts easy as well....

Buy a decent barrier cream and some lanolin based moisturiser. Now you'll be smelling like a sheeps bum, but your crack wont be sore.

You're welcome :msn-wink:

Yep the premix is for the bucket although I like getting my hands into all the dirty crap.... So looks like I need to buy some latex gloves and put the box somewhere I'll see them and actually use them! Lanolin.... Sheeps bum.... I like it! So maybe I could put some of that on my hands and then put a pair of gloves on and then I can moisturise while I work?! ;)

Best hand cream by miles is that Neutrogena stuff, at least as far as repairing dry, damaged hands:

I agree with madness....its comon to get dry cracked hands when milking cows.
getting hands consitantly wet and dry is really bad for them...and nomal garden variety hand moisturisers are shit..infact...I reckon they make them worse!

Totally agree, unfortunately I get occasional dry/cracked hands as part of an allergy that harrasses me from time to time and I've found that most hand moisturisers do aggravate the problem, that stuff above is the only thing I have found that works and actually helps to heal the cracking.

I have a similar problem at work (Jet A1 fuel, and fertilisers)
I have found stuff called "Lipobase" works quite well

Aqueous cream. You can get big tubs of it from the pharmacy for next to nothing.

Good thread Trudes.

I suffer from the same complaint myself. Well actually I don't suffer, I just fix it.

What I've found helps is to use a nail file to file the cracked skin smooth, and then use the hemp cream from the Body Shop on the smoothed out skin. Works for me.

Thanks guys, some good suggestions! I will have to investigate some of these creams while I'm buying some gloves! I'll have to wear gloves while the cream is on my hands so I don't grease out everything else in the house!

(BTW my hubby thinks it's halirious that I managed to get a bunch of bikers to talk about the type of hand cream they use.... it's ok, he doesn't understand, he has baby bottom smooth hands (not enough hard work I say!))

It's good shit - and cheap. Plus it's a good barrier cream for kids faces if you are face painting them.

It's also a good barrier cream to prevent Boardie rash in the summer and probably boob rubbage as well

My supermarket has the latex and a non latex glove in a ten pack, cheap - I find the latex ones give my hands a bit of a itch so the others are a good alternative.

Crack, latex & cream - all excellent words to use in a sentence :devil2:

...ease the pain of my dry cracks? Cheers.

I just logged on and saw the title of this thread, and immediately knew I had to share this little gem. Many years ago now, I took the kids up to Cape Reinga. We went down the Te Paki stream and the kids played silly buggers on the sand dunes. A great time was had by all, by the time they had enough, they resembled creatures from the black swamp :D

I was planning on taking them to the Houhora Pub for food after but they were so disgustingly dirty I couldn't. A partial strip was required before they could even get in the car

My youngest daughter announced gleefully before she got in the car...

"Mom, I have got sand in my crack!"

Just had to share :sunny:

Don't buy latex gloves!!! Fuel will dissolve them in seconds. Get either "Nitrile" of preferably "High Risk Blue" gloves. Both will still swell, but they are designed for use with solvents. They should be available at any auto-refinish supply store and they're not expensive.

If you have a rural supply store (CRT) nearby, Henrietta's make a great cream called Farmers Hand Repair Cream. Works well, a little goes along way. 600ml pottle about $18- economical and pleasant to use.

At least with nitrile or blue you get more than 10 seconds before they dissolve and they don't rip as easily.

Yup right on, latex will just dissolve and the resultant jelly will do ugly things to skin, most "safety" shops will sell solvent resistant gloves. Also barrier cream is fantastic stuff if your going to get dirty, most stuff will wash off with little effort if it is applied before you start work, also available from most safety shops.

Aqueous cream. You can get big tubs of it from the pharmacy for next to nothing.

Aqueous cream is quite good, but it doesn't contain either silicone or lanolin. So use it as a preventative not a repair. Better than aqueous , for that purpose, get emulsifying ointment from the same chemist, also cheap. It's a greasy ointment , rub a little into the hands before working on whatever. Afterward , wash hands under hot tap. The hot water turns the emulsifying ointment on the hands into aqueous cream. (I used to make the stuff).

You know I would but so far away. Can understand the fertilser part, super phos, nitrogen etc and then milking makes hands nice and soft then the small cuts start tickling.

I don't need to beat my chest, but using screwdrivers and other tools for work, helps when haymaking or shovelling dirt, sort of the manual work around the house or on dads farmlet, without using moisturiser helps toughen the palms, thus makes for happy days ahead without blisters.

If that's the case Trudes, may I also suggest a visit to your GP? My GP once told me I may have to find another occupation because of Dermatitis and provided only one option in order to save my job. It worked and has done for over 20 years, but it is prescription only and is called “Nerisone Fatty Ointment”.

Good luck!:niceone:

Thanks for that, I'll ask my GP next time I see her. My hands are normally a little dry (I'm not particularly "girly" and tend to just get stuck in and do shit without thinking about putting gloves on to protect (apart from gloves when riding... I do happen to like some skin on my hands)) but they get really dry and end up with cracks that often bleed after playing with petrol and other nasty harsh on skin stuff... but I'll mention it to the GP. Cheers! :)

Fiber Glass International Trade shops have Nitrile gloves for $12.00/100.

Get Gloves in a Bottle from hardware stores or safety stores. This stuff will protect skin from strong acids.

Go to the chemist and pay 5 times as much

Absolutely! I had some Neutrogena hand creme so I used some of that which helped with the initial pain. Then I tried some Palmer's Olive Butter cream, which was also quite good. So gotta go to the chemist today so will ask about some of the creams that you lovely folks have recommended, so will post up how I get on. :)
