View Full Version : Potential new places to ride

I thought I'd start a thread about possible new places to ride that people may find or hear about that could be worth further research.

Other members can then chime in if they have local knowledge or know where to find out more about ADV access and whether it's a potential location or not.

So first up, here's some I have found while talking to people and trawling the net.

There is 4x4 access to something called Gundies Track which apparently is at or near Otaki forks. I can't find any reference to it on the net except a listing on a 4wd club page of an upcoming trip there.

THe Levin 4wd club does trips to somewhere called Mount Thompson. again I can't find any info on it.

Kahuterawa Tracks, quite a few mentions of 4WD tracks in this area.

From Palmerston North (18km, 20 minutes) Go over Fitzherbert bridge and head past Massey University and along Tennant Drive towards Linton. Take the first left after a 1/2 km straight then follow the road for 100m and turn right into Kahuterawa Road. Follow this to the Domain (approx 4km) and head up to the left, following the gravel road until the car park on your right, 200m short of the road end.

Kohitere Forest, Levin. Agagin quite a few mentions of 4WD tracks in this area.

Drive to Levin, via Shannon, is the most straight forward. Turn left off SH 57 into Queen St East and left into Denton Rd. The road side carpark is about 100 metres along this road.

Done both of those.

Kohuterawa Track. Easy. Used to do that when I lived in PNth. Would be something you'd link with another ride in the area. Domains nice for a picnic too.

The Kohitere Forest was used for the 'That Ride'. Could likely talk to Andy King re guidance through there.

I don't think they would like ADV bikes in there.

This one is abit different. Maybe with permission from the forest owner.
Take North Manakau Road and if with permission can get all the way to Waitohu Quarry. All with this has to be arranged pior as locked gates and pissed off land owners.

And with more help you can get all the way to Otaki Gorge.

All this riding country is quite rough so unless people are very good big bike riders it would be best to use a smaller one.
Now this could end up like a RED RAG to a Bull and some one might give it a go.

It's really not ADV Country, More like trail bike stuff/ enduro

New Zealand is getting hard to find new paddocks to plough.

Good Luck

This Post Eddie?
I am sure it is a good idea...
The Aussie guys have posted something about rating the best 500 roads...
Most of us have GPS or similar and if we just post the road names.
Maybe then the guys can go hunting and find them, do them and any questions will ask?

I myself prefer to explore, when I find something cool I will share it...
Just a thought..

"coonsyer" has a website advroutes.org.nz, mostly SI routes ATM but maybe if you find some good places you could share them there for everyone to access.

Yep, familiar with CooneyR's site, I've contributed a number of tracks to it.

My idea for this thread was not so much to rate roads but to try and find some new places to ride that maybe aren't known by everyone.

Everyone has seen the 4x4 offroading book, knows about the 42nd, the Motu, and the south island tracks. I was hoping to bring out lesser known locations that aren't so publicised and may not be known outside the local area.

For example there's heaps of side tracks off the desert road but has anyone ever tried any of them to see where they go? Not in the military zone but at the north end where the 2 valleys with the 35km corners at the bottom of them are.

The other ones I posted up at the beginning of the thread were found during a few internet searches on the basis that possibly if 4x4's can go there we can go there, pending access approval if required of course. I've never heard of any of them but if they were ridable would be a new day trip from home.

it might be fun riding in the military zone.
