Hey was wondering what a good price for a full rebuild for a FZR400? I hit a false neutral on the way home from work the other night and the poor thing revved out to 16k and now shes not sounding the best. Well it sounds fine while cruising or caning it but at idle its sounding rough and clanky.

I will be interested to hear what has actually happened to it.

I think I may have damaged the valve train but as im no expert, i was gonna give it a oil change first hope for the best and if its still buggered then look at a rebuild. Would love to know how much it'll be though, approx of course.

at a guess, 3-4k for a full rebuild? depends on cost and availability of parts I gues. Mate of mine just got a rebuild done, gearbok, cams, blah blah blah, kept the pistons, conrods etc though. I guess it really depends on exactly what you managed to fuck up, which you wont know till she is in a bazillion pieces?

Paul in NZ did a restoration on one of these. Here is (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=49874) the resto thread he started a couple years back.

sounds like a new engine would be cheaper

Lotsa things can cause em to be rattly at idle - carb balance, rooted timing chain / tensioner etc etc.
Drop the oil and inspect it carefully for metal bits, if all clear give it a leak down test, it might be something simple like a broken ring but.... sorry - it's at least 20 years older than the maker ever intended it to be so it's going to take either some effort on your part or some money and if you buy the parts locally, stand by for a reaming...
Even getting the stuff from the USA, expect to shell out $1500 to $2000 for a top end jobbie much of which will go into the head.
With 4 cylinder power comes 4 of everything costs.
btw, how many kms on it and what condition is the rest of it in????

If its had regular oil n filters the bottom end might be ok but by the time you look at chains, sprockets, plugs and all the other stuff... well you better really love that thing!!!! Its going to cost! Still, nice bikes, people love em...
