View Full Version : U-turning Police Cars

This morning riding along east coast bays at about 7:15 in the wet, there was a row of cars in front of me. A few cars ahead I notice a car on the opossite side doing a share U-Turn in front of oncoming traffic. I had to slow down a bit to let him finish his stunt. But it gets better...

Suddenly the lights come on, its an unmarked cop. He pulls out to over take the some of the cars on the median strip then finds the concrete island in his way, so he pulls completely over to the wrong side of the road to pass the cars and go around the island! :nono: Nothing was coming the other way luckily.

I kept my eye on him, hoping he was going on some urgent life saving mission but alas, he pulled an old clunker off the road - probably for 'speeding'. :Pokey:

What you reckon? A petty infringement I should let slide or something worth complaining about? (http://www.crime.co.nz/c-files.aspx?ID=10284)

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but if you'd managed to get the number of the squad car it could have been fun making a complaint. However, if they wanted to they could find out who was on patrol up there at that hour, but I doubt they'd want to.

Always good to try and get a back-up witness coz your word alone against a cop ain't worth shit.

Mind you, if everybody who saw a cop doing something silly did nothing about it they'd keep doing silly shit and one day some bikers might get taken out in somewhere like the Buller Gorge. Doh! Too late.

Yep, I have his rego, was thinking of posting it up here to shame the pig and ask passers by to key the paintwork as the pass by, but no doubt that would be traceable somehow ;)

It's also unlikely to affect the driver in any way, the taxpayer will just foot the repair bill.

Complain and complain hard.

If he'd seen you doing a dodgey u-turn you'd be in the box quicker than you can say "it wasn't me, officer".

if i were you i would write YOUR account of the situation and send it to HQ... asking for their reply please......

and just see... enough of these and the police may change (tui?) their rules to suit the conditions.. like everyone else has to....

Put in a complaint. They may do nothing with it...this time...but there will be a record. The next time the bozzo does something off, and a member of the public complains...you get the picture.

Hang on..he was only doing his job wasn't he? well, wasn't he??
we all know the police are above the law in their own minds, so what is the advantage of complaining?
Ya better off throwing a grenade at him for some 'instant justice' :nono:

I bet that's what he would say to the complaint. Pitty there are so few of them who don't seem to realise that there's a difference between police doing thier job and police doing thier job safely.

I was watching some "cops" show on telly, and the idiot officer does exactly that, right on camera for the world to see! A car coming up behind him comes completely to a halt facing his drivers' door while he is U turning. :weird:

Don't these people like living or something?

He probably heard he was getting transferred to Edgecumbe and just wanted to end it all.

I think it is commendable that the police officers are willing to put their own lives on the line to stop dangerous criminals.

I really do.

But it would perhaps be a good idea to introduce some guidelines so they are able to distinguish between dangerous criminals and petty offenders (yes, speeding is a petty offense - if even that).

As for going on the "wrong" side of a traffic island. If there is indeed nothing coming the other way it's hardly dangerous now is it?

Yes complain, it is blatant dangerous driving, if a member of the public did the same it would end in a court case...go for it ....

And remember our ACC costs when doing so, for it is mutts like this that "cause" accidents..

What the fucks wrong with this part? Or is it just adding flavour to your little drama?
BTW I do this in nice shiny red trucks also. Cool eh? I know I should really morph through the island but seeing it's clear, and no fucker would ever dream of pulling over for us as it inconveniences them, going around is much easier and more fun......or even making the traffic stop and move over like they're fucken supposed to is even MORE fun again!

Fact is, that clunker may have had someone nasty in it for all you know, could also have just been for a ticket.......

U-turn without lights on I agree was defintely a bad decision

Unless the public get off their arse and voice complaints then you can bet nothing will change. At least putting in a complaint adds to a database. Then if there is a serious accident the database can be accessed (say at a coroners inquest) to show that it is not an isolated incident but an escalating problem that needs to be addressed. It is better than having the cops say at an inquest that it is not an issue as we have had no complaints.
Make sure it is a formal complaint via a letter.
To have a cop do a u turn, in the circumstances and manner in which you describe, is simply unacceptable.

Well firefighter unless you were going to rescue a puddy cat from a tree I think you are quite justified in your actions and I am sure your woo woo siren and flashy lights would be on :)

That's the bit that I really don't like, I would have thought that he should have put his lights on before doing anything else.

Don't bother going whiney and self-righteous down to the equally whiney and self-righteous complaint departments. How bad was this fucken manouvre anyway? Slow down and let the fucken cop do the fucken U-turn. If the road was clear on the other side then let the cop fucking go for it.

Could've been a shifty carload of burglar punks in the clunker. Been down the road trashing someones house and contents. Wouldn't have no fucken drivers licence or any of that shit. Cop could've found himself hassling law-abiding JoeBlow for no reason - clunker could've been rego'd and warranted . Who bloody knows. Go whiney and you'll end up with a down-turned mouth, a caustic look and a "I've been sucking lemons all my life" demeanor.

Agree with the general thoughts here but we don't know all the facts - he could have been pursuing a vehicle from a robbery etc. Make your complaint and see what comes from it.

Ha! what's the fun in that  - Was pretty annoyed this morning, but it doesn't seam like a major, that's why I posted it to get opinions.

I am all for cops doing their jobs and I can understand they need to take calculated risks to get somewhere in a hurry. If it was a simple speeding ticket or expired warrant I think he could have driven is a safer manner than he did.

When he stopped he parked behind the car, not in front of it to block a get away, and he get out with is clip board quite calmly.

It's a requirement to join up. Obey the mantra, nothing else.
