Hey folks I got a ticket from the local council for parking the wrong way on the roadside .
Im going DO WHAT??
What possible difference can it make what end faces traffic.
Can somebody tell me the the law it breaks to park in daylight with the front of the vehicle facing oncoming traffic.
Sounds petty because the fine is only $40 but it annoys me they have nothing better to do.

It's the parking the wrong way law, punishable by $40.

One of the ministry of silly walks laws that i laughed at when i arrived in NZ

Because a nighttime the reflectors around your lights will be facing the wrong way.

Legal in the UK. Illegal in NZ.

I think the 'logic' is that to park on the wrong side you must have driven on the wrong side of the road at some point.

Makes no sense when the road only has room for a single lane of traffic, like the roads around my place

And when you leave the park, you'll have to exit on to the wrong side of the street, or reverse out. This is gonna be especially troublesome when someone is waiting for you to leave your park so they can park there.

From the Road Code section on where not to park (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/about-driving/where-not-to-park.html):

You must not park or stop your vehicle:

* on the right-hand side of the road, except in a one-way street

As Flatcap says, to drive in and out of a car park on the RHS you need to drive on the wrong side of the road for several seconds. There are many places where this increases the risk involved. (OK, and some where it doesn't.) It's a good rule, in my opinion, and I'm glad we didn't follow the UK example.

they made it law in the 30's.
they used to find stupid people stuck in the middle of the road beside cars parked the wrong way, walking round in tight circles.
initially it was not a problem, cars just drove round them on the way to the supermarket etc, the problem arose when the drivers went to pay at the supermarket checkout and found that it was unattended.

YOU LAWLESS HEATHEN!!!

How DARE you park on the wrong side of the road. That's worse than drink-driving, murder, rape and knifing pensioners all rolled into one.

Why won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?

Lock him up, and throw away the key.

I for one am outraged.

I was too fined once for parking my cage the wrong way on a small no centre line road. It was a windy Wellington day, if I parked it the right way the doors would have blown off. Parking wardens just pushing there luck, I wrote to the council to have the fine wavered.

It's not legal in the Uk, you have to park facing the flow of traffic. Nobody takes any notice of it though and I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for it either.

So Frosty was pretty lucky to get away with a $40 fine, then?

It starts with parking the wrong way, then it becomes bank robberies.

Frosty, was the WCC? Tell them to sort their shit out before they go issuing tickets.

Actually, tease them about not existing in a year or so.

I HAVE to park nose in if I'm parked on a sloping street as BB's stand doesn't give a large enough angle to guarantee he doesn't tip over at the slightest gust or touch.

I'd write back stating that you had to park that way to ensure the bike didn't fall over.

Legal in the UK. Illegal in NZ.

It is only legal in UK during daylight hours. At night - the reflectors are (as you said) facing the wrong way and are useless.

Here in NZ it is illegal all hours. There was a couple of cars along my road (quite a posh street) that regularly parked facing the wrong way - one was on a blind hill on a bend. I came driving along, the pillock was just about to pull out and had headlights on, that and an oncoming vehicle also with headlights on - I was literally blind. Very dangerous.

I rang the council about the two cars down my street - no idea what happened but they dont do it very often now. But I still ring the council if I see it.

I've been assuming Frosty got the ticket for a 4-wheeled vehicle.

Bikes are a bit different because you can turn them round before you drive off. I guess the reflector issue still applies at night.

It wasn't a bike, was it, Frosty? Has anyone got a ticket for parking a bike on the wrong side of the road? Or the wrong way on the roadside?

Nope... look to the left to maintain my night vision.

Pretty hard with four high powered head lights pointed at me. Two on each side of the road and me heading down the middle. No idea if there was a car there as my lights are old sealed beams and got lost in the light of the oncoming cars.

Heh, my old man was done in the late 70's for that one as i remember him spitting feathers about it... quite understandable really as we lived in a culdesac and the car was parked outside the house... At the time i believe it was something to do with parking lights facing the wrong way...

Fave law: "Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England, but only in tropical fish stores"... bit iffy as to whether it's a current law...

Hmm. Steep angle and deep storm drains on some of the angle parking around here. Means you can't haul your bike backwards up hill and wot with the angle there's a realistic danger of it falling over if facing downhill (obviously left in gear).

Actually, the world's most stupid law is here :-
http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/about-driving/night-driving.html

"You must turn on your vehicle's headlights:

from 30 minutes after sunset, until 30 minutes before sunrise"

I notice the local dibbles never bother about the following either :-
at any other time when you can't clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away.

The number of halfwits driving around with no lights on in thick fog astonishes me.
