Anyone who's had a hernia op care to comment on recovery time for going adv riding?

Had my pre-op assessment today (possibly gettin my op on Monday 27th) and the nurse reckons 6 weeks rest from offroad riding with no lifting or strenuous activity for definite, and then 3 months before lifting heavy objects like a DR650! Startin to sound a bit of a bummer for someone who regularly drops his DR!

You can leave the bike in my garage mate, I can crash it every so often so it doesn't feel like it's being neglected ;)

Was back MXing my KLX700 after afew months but was fairly careful with what I did . Had key hole surgery so things healed pretty quickly but let things take the time as ya do .

Doctors tend to give you the worst case, you'll heal up faster than the tail-enders.
You will be the best judge of when you are fit.

Depends what/where the hernia is. I had surgery on a Umbilical Hernia earlier in the year and they actually cut me right open. My symptoms dissapeared immeadiately but I wasnt really able to move around comfortably for a month or so as it was right in my abdominal section which you use more than you realise!

Depending on what type of surgery it is will depend on your recovery time. Try and get 'key-hole' surgery. Recovery time is not as long.

Do take it easy after the op. Even though you are feeling ok things do take time to heal properly. My ex busted his foo foo valve and ended up having it surgically reapaired. The doctor was really happy with the way it was healing and told him to resume normal duties but to take it easy. Read get stuck back in. Within a week he had developed what is called a surgical hernia, another loop higher than where the original one was. So do take it easy eh?

Its 3 months total matey so no need to add 6 weeks to the 3 months! Still 3 months is a freakin long time either way!!!

Thx everyone else for the comments/input; its a groin hernia and they are doing keyhole and usin the mesh technique for repair, so I am hoping the recovery will be on the quicker side!

Otherwise Joe or Eddie may well have to take my bike off me to keep me from offroadin too soon! I guess Odlins Road will be off the menu for a good while!

Common sense goes a huge way here!

Yes us medical people will usually give advise that errs on the conservative side but really, you just have to gently see how things heal up for you

Hopefully your recovery time is shortened and you just never know when you can ease back onto the bike:scooter:

All the best!!

that seems to be a good technique,a mate of mine had it and was back chopping firewood in about 3 weeks, although he is a bit of a hard bastard.... good luck!:niceone:

Kind of like hearing the stories about getting the snip - you know people feeling ok then going for a MTB ride the next day - then big black cannonballs sprouting out of their jocks:crybaby:

Keyhole repair with mesh is the way to go. Go for a short walk the day after the op and see how you feel. Do what you're comfortable doing. If it hurts - STOP!!! Take your painkillers regularly for the firts two to three days, even if you're not particularly sore. It's better to stay ahead of the pain than try to catch up. The advice the nurse gave you is ancient. For a one-sided hernia (I presume) you should be able to lift the bike after three to four weeks.
Good luck with the op. Remember that you don't have to shave for keyhole ops!
