You pick the cosiest sounding meeting places... under the old bridge... aren't we supposed to pose outside cafes?

Seriously, as per PM I will decide on the day. Probably bring the TT, methinks. XLR has no front brakes at present  El Scooto, you tempted to bring your wee wasp?

Not this time. Got her fixed up though, bent push rod for the clutch. Straightened it out and better that ever. Am going to make a guide for the chain so hopefully it won't come off so easy.

Taking the big bike so I can play with the others. (Does that sound dodgy?)

I'd take the Transalp, but in a moment of weakness I binned it last time out there, and Mrs B grumped at me. It's f***in' slippery on the main tracks at the moment. That reminds me, the Sth Side was closed for logging about 5km W of the intake when Casualty and I rode up there two weekend ago. I s'pose we can ride around the closed off area.....

Whats this, an actual ride?
Are we gravel only or do I need a road registered bike?
KDX needs a run

Alf and I were up there on Monday having a blast and road was still closed then but it wasn't hard to go around it along the river flats.
Still nursing bruised knee and elbow from a high side ejection while on grass track on North side, weeeee!
Anyone got spare indicator for DRZ400, Suzuki dealer wants $90 + gst for a new one, yeah right!! I guess will replace with after market ones.

I find it's a lot easier navigating traveling west on the south bank.
There are ways around everything and you can go all the way between the gorge and Coutts Island, Belfast without hitting the seal or risking anything on a non plated bike on the South side.
I don't consider there to be anything to worry about except the short sealed bit actually crossing the gorge bridge on the north bank either. In fact no, I'm not actually concerned about that bit.

The bit from the Peg in Belfast to the other side of the Old Waimak bridge is my only concern for non plated bikes.

Don't know If I'm in or not yet, but would like to go... on the CRF. I would be inclined to park up at Coutts Island maybe and somehow sneak the bike to the meeting place, then ride the rest of the lop back to collect the Van again. Never tried that loop in one go before on the CRF, wonder if it has the range.

hey guys, im keen to tag along and come met ya's sometime :scooter:

im mates with zerax and have a road legal 04 xr250 with knobblies, although no licence yet... hopefully sit learners soon haha.

Moved to chch a year ago and have mucked around in the waimak and leifield beach/pub ride and a couple of trail rides. Even took zerax out to mccleans island last weekend for his first ride on his new wee beast :)

riding hard'ish my bike gets 120k before hitting reserve, might be similar for your crf Transalper?

....where do u start the south side track from?If you're going for distance you can go in via Dickeys Rd, Coutts Island Rd, Lorimas Rd where the shingle starts. It's just shingle stop banks and roads for a bit, then Trail and 4x4 options come and go and come and go..... I just remember where the gates are a lot better when going up stream on the south rather than downstream on the south.

Transalper
24th July 2009, 23:04
The Old Waimak Bridge. If you travel up Marshland Rd straight through it becomes the Main North Rd (Not to be confused with the Motorway) past Kaianga over the old Bridge. If you glance left going over the Old Waimak Bridge you can see the Motor Way bridge further over. Hook a left immediatly after the bridge ends and go over the hump toward the boat ramp area.
If you were to miss the turn you'd find yourself going past the garage (i think it's still there) and eventually be in Kaiapoi.

the road is packed hard so you can get along quite quickly - near the end had a black ktm adventurer in front of me and i couldnt catch him - damn he was quick. may need to trade up again

have a great day tomorrow out there - wish i could make it

Took a lot longer to fix than i thought but back into it now.
Make Cynna an offer he can't refuse for that nice looking XR he has!! If i wasn't moving house i might be in for an XR650 myself. Either that or wait for the KTM 690's to start popping up at a reasonable price second hand.

If I was going for something else,it's going to be a DRZ400,bit lighter and more capable for when I do trail riding than the XT.Not that the XT isn't bad offroad, but trying to pull/push 175kgs out of mud and picking it up 5 times in a day isn't much fun.

Camera only came out at a couple of stops so I have basically the same pics as cooneyr, but here they are anyway...
1,2,3 at the meeting before departure.
4 after a play on a hilly loop half way up the north side.
5 cooneyr and El scooto departing from the McLanes Island 'hump in the road' parking area along the south side.
6 my crf while I wait for Lugzy and the rest to arrive at the exit. We had split in to two groups along the south bank where the logging guys were working.

Rapaki, Huntsbury, Worsleys, and the Chch side of the Bridal path are still paper roads. Ifyou want a challange go give Worsleys ago. Will be slippery as a slippery thing. All of these bar the Bridal Path are on my website (www.advroutes.org.nz). Other ones to have ago on if you like a challange are the two purple ones out on Banks Peninsular - Robinsons Bay Stock Track and Takamatua Stock Track.

Not sur if my site has gone haywire (at work) but I can't seem to get the routes anymore for the info??? You should be able to click on the line of the route to get some info and to download GPS route files.

Does anyone know if you are allowed to ride up track behind Kennedys Bush, up behind Halwell Quarry There is a sign saying it is a public road through private land, and there is no lock on the gate. There is nothing saying you are not allowed to drive up it. Anybody know? That could be worth a look when lambing is finished

I'd always understood that one (from the end of Kenneds Bush Road to the Summit Road) to be private property or bits of it anyway. CCC website (http://www.ccc.govt.nz) is a good place to start when trying to find this sort of stuff out.

Meet 8:30am outside Canterbury Rides Shop at 156 Ferry Rd, Christchurch all gassed up and ready to leave about 8:45am.
The ride is expected to finish in Little River around 5pm maybe.
At a guess the whole trip may be around 300km with opportunity to refuel at Little River and Akaroa.

Lunch stop is in Akaroa but I will still pack some snack food and my own lunch anyway.

The ride is big and smallish bike friendly involving lots of winding hilly shingle roads.
I am still thinking of skipping the challenge sections this round and just leaving my road tyres on the DR.

It's a good opportunity to get some Route Sheet navigation experience if you take a moment to download and assemble the routesheet and stick it in your holder then you can navigate for yourself, or just follow us.
Further detail is in recent posts above.

Doh I've not tested it with IE8. Might explain why I was getting odd behaviour at work where I have IE8. Better get investigating then. If bloody Microsoft would stick to the schema rather than fiddling as they have with many of the recent versions of IE all would be well. Thanks for the heads up TA.

Hi Triwi, if you are using IE8 click on the compatibility mode button and the site will work better. I'll get help with fixing this in a couple of weeks - way beyond my level of expertise.

On the front page of cooneyrs website is says "This site works best with Mozilla Firefox which is free to download." and has a button near the bottom to take you to the Firefox download site. Or go straight here (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html?from=getfirefox).
It's true, the site has always worked better when using Firefox instead on Internet Explorer. Why not give it a try.
Go here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/features/easier.aspx) to find out where to find the compatibility button is and how to use it in IE8.

To check you IE version Click the 'Help' menu button up top ob the Internet Explorer Window, drop down to 'About Internet Explorer' and click that. You should now have a little window pop up stating some info including which version of IE you have.
See pic1 attached although there could be several ways to get the help menu up depending upon your configuration.

Pic2 is a bit of IE8 Compatibility Button info.
Cheers
TA.

Put a RAM mount ball on the back of my roll chart holder and wound in the route sheet last night.
Just need to scavenge a RAM handlebar mount from the crf or MTB to complete the setup. Will be interesting to see how good it is compared to the other ways I've mounted that box.

I've started making a few notes too like where the challenge bits and bypass sections re join.

Distances for Saturday: I see 292to 315km total including and depending upon which way we go home from Little River after the end.
Start to Akaroa is 140km, then there is only 100km from Akaroa to the end at Little River after Lunch, but I remember it felt like longer by then. Ride home for me in centre of town could be 52km or up to 75km depending on choices made.

Looking like awesome weather for an awesome ride on Saturday.

It's also going to be another good test of my vibration proofing work done to the guts of the GPS which had become unreliable even mounted through the RAM system. I opened it up and soldered wires between the battery contacts and circuit board as the circuit board had arcing deposits messing it up from the contacts bouncing off the board I presume.
Picture kind of shows the contacts. Should have taken another after the wires were put in but I drew some lines instead. :Offtopic:

The vibration used to break my solder joints from the board to the external connector :D

It's all just tight winding shingle roads on the Banks Pensulia hills.
I'm skipping the challenge sections (#1 up Robsons Bay stock track and #2 down Takamatua Stock Track then along Old Coach Rd) but others can do them if they want and we can regroup at sheet numbers #68 and #99 respectively. We can wait for the energetic ones at those points.

It's also pretty easy to bail back on to sealed roads from most the route if you get tired and want to call it a day.

1,2,3 - From Bossu Rd, Lands End intersection

4 - The Ice that stopped ThePom.

5 - View back toward Akaroa while the others were on the Challenge Section. We could see them but the camera wasn't powerful enough to show them.

6 - Lunch at Akaroa

1 - This pic was uploaded out of order. It's the top of the Challenge section (they only did 1 Challenge while The Pom and I took the bypass.)

2,3 - Approaching Okains Bay.

4 - Another bay somewhere.

5- View near the top of Western Valley Rd back toward Port Levy.

I took the DRZ to the "Have a go track day" at Ruapuna on Saturday, what a blast.
There were 5 other DRZ's there and approx 80 bikes in total.
Smoked a few sports bikes in the corners but had to focus on staying out of the way on the back straight! I Did manage to clock a maximum speed of 152kmph which I thought was pretty respectable for a 400cc dirt bike (with supermoto wheels fitted)

I should have got a matching E-07 for the front and joined you with the 950. I bailed early and came home over the hill (well half the hill - did Harmans track). The 950 goes around corners on the seal like a (good) mad thing  My front D606 tyre is looking a little worse for wear after just that ride back from Akaroa. I dont think I'll have to worry about the back of the middle knobs wearing out - just go for a spin on the seal and it will wear them square again ;) I've no idea how I would have compared for speed against a road bike but it would have been interesting to find out.

There is plenty of paper roads around Canty, you might have to be a bit more specific than that. The CCC (Chch, Cheviot, Culverden) loop is a good day out.

Could probably manage a slightly cut down version in the near future.
Reluctant to use Limestone Rd at the moment in case it's full of Lambs.
There is still a reasonable shingle road there that goes around the propertys Limestone runs through.
Limestone is just a bit greener and a little more technical.

Got no issue with the rest of the loop... although once we did a private extension which we paid for access to which was cool but we was already tired by then.

+1. There was quite a few lambs on Random Spur Rd (southern end) when I went through a few weeks ago as well. Thought I might have to do a bit of sheparding to get mum and one lamb back to the other lamb (twins) but it all turned out OK. I grew up on a farm and spent all the august/september holidays lambing but if your not so confident with the blond ones I'd suggest you leave them alone. (I sold the velcro gloves a few years ago!)

My original plans (Rnd Mt Hutt) for the 3rd of august are a no go. Calving and Lambing are just getting into the swing of things and while one farmer doesn't mind the other would prefer we don't go through. If we all have spark arrestors he is not unhappy about us going through in summer or we could just do early autumn.

Alternative plans then - I'm thinking CCC loop. I know that lambing has been under way in that area for close on a month now so it will be fine to go through. I use to chase lambs on the quad when they were about a month old  and I can play farmer brown if need be.

So 3rd of Oct, 9am at the PEG and be ready for 300kms of riding. Mostly seal and gravel (some tight and windy with gates) but with about 10 kms of reasonably easy grass/dirt/clay and some ruts. This is a scenic trip not a knarly one so bring your camera.

See you all then.

The PEG? As in Belfast Hotel just before the highway north?

300Km? That's hitting the reserve on my DR650's horribly teensy 13l tank about 3 times. Are there refuel points?

What time do you expect to get back? (Here's hoping for lots of rest stops... they don't call DR's The Punishers of the Prostrate for nuthin.)

That's the ride all right.
It goes through Cheviot and Culverden, both have Fuel Stations.

The Peg is indeed the Belfast Tavern.

How long it takes depends upon who turns up.
Allow all day (home around tea time maybe) or bail on the seal half way through, it's up to you.

Will be good to finally meet you.

Hope my daughter's up for it, she's not in town often so it could be a bit hard on her butt as she's not acclimatised to the DR seat either. Back of DR seats aren't great either.

I use to do it no worries on the standard DR tank with one refuel at Cheviot. We dont ride continuously for the 300kms and there are plenty of gates to open etc so you should be fine seat wise. Its a good day out without being overly demanding technically or distance wise. I did it in about 4 hours about a month ago but it is more likely it will take us about 6 hours.

Sigh! I tend to like my adventures with much more rest stops, pauses to contemplate the scenery, and occasionally... I lie back in the soft grass with a glove over my eyes.... and let the Big Warm Sleepy Light tease the snoring noises out of me.

LOL, lost 4x4.
That video looks like the Eyre River ford you cross as you go up along the Waimak.
We crossed it ok on the 15th. Had water in it then but it's usually a dry riverbed.
There's a video of some of our ride with a bit of the Eyre river ford on Peeteeys youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agYOur5gS3A) from the 15th although I see he's got the date wrong on the video titles.

Interesting about the washout.

A small bunch of us went for a play (training session) couple of weekends back. Eyre was up then too.

Had a run through the north side yesterday, played in a few of the 4wd mudholes, but didn't get too adventurous due to being all alone and not wanting to get stuck.Found some decent enduro tracks up past the water race/downs road and chased down 3 2 stroke mx bikes, which seemed to give them a fright.

On the way back I had a look at the crossing above, seems other bikes had been going around the fence, where the people on the left on the video are standing, and going through the paddock and crossing a bit further up in shallower water.

It wasn't that bad, was very glad I was wearing my padded road leathers! :D I'm not planning on doing it again mind you ...

Hey people, got some time to spare on Friday (tomorrow) from about 11:30am to 4pm/5pm ish so thinking about going for a ride.
Like to see how Lees Valley is and the river flow is reported about 2cu mec so should be fine at the moment but it is always nice to have backup so anyone interested or should I save it and get back to my videos?
