alright .. ive take the engine almost as far as i can with the old FJ.. its time for a tart-up..
ive got a client who is a REALLY talented painter and has offered me some wikked ideas...
im staying close to the original paint scheme (blue and white) but Aaron is talking about some of the new matte paint with some pearl shot through the base and matte clearcoat over re-designed decals
while Spooky is stripped .. i am going to be polishing the Alloy and giving it a coat of the matte clear also and stripping and coating the cases with some hi-temp...
also strip the trees and give them a good touch up
the seats (yes .. i have 2) will be given a sculpt and re-skin ( where, i dont know yet but i'm not gonna pay custom seat prices)
also .. gonna incorporate the design below somewhere into the paint scheme...

hmm Matte paint.
Cool on rat rods and old school bobbers, Monsters, Triples and there is a HD in satin black that look good.
But the FJ ...........:sweatdrop
I'd do some serious Internet image research this weekend.

dunno man .. he showed me some nice bits he's painted in it ..looks better than the Kwaka Matte from the factory .. he's rolling FJ Blue Pearl over a candy black to give it a bit of depth and candy white over a silver pearl to make the white 'pop' a bit and running matting clear over it ... ive seen some panels he prepped up for me and it looks awesome .. almost a velour- look to it
still havnt green lighted anything so im open to suggestions

apparently, my painter mate says the clear matte he is using is rugged as a brick.. he whacked it with a spanner and it didnt chip so im not too horribly worried about it

Yeah I'm a bit of a old fart with paint - expect it to shine!
Having said that below is a picture of a flat and gloss combo paint job that I really like - a combo design may work well on the FJ.
Check with your painter if you go flat then decide it's not for you, can it just be clear coated with a gloss to give full shine? I'm pretty sure it could be.

Goodonya for even thinkin' about it Sarge. So many supposed motorcycling "rebels" just stick with OEM paint schemes, it'd be great to see sumthin' a bit more personal.

yea ... thought about going batshit on it ... full custom everything, but its a homage to the bike i think to keep it 'relatively' standard looking and updating it just a touch
they are after all a cult bike like the Vmax, the Z1000 and Katana .. be a shame to make it unrecognizable

Stainless brakes lines, polished fork brace, all visible screws, bolts, nutts changed to stainless, red plug leads.
Just a couple of thoughts for you to personalise your ride for a few dollars

Good to keep it to a vaguely standard sort of scheme - you don't want to give the game away TOO soon, to those unsuspecting squids you gaff, slice and feed through the mincer.........

Hey - it's an FJ, not an XJR.........

brake lines done when the ABS "fell off".. fork brace i am going to wait on till i can get the forks sorted out (EXUP) .. never got into the stainless stuff .. maybe if they were black anodized Torx-head bolts...i can source anything like that through work anyway... i have a set of Taylor 10mm hi energy leads for it but havnt put them on yet
i've already "personalized" the engine ... :innocent::shit:

Wow - just had a read through your blog list of mods to your beast - I now strongly recommend painting the entire bike in the same matte paint used on the stealth bombers - you'll need all the help you can get to avoid radar detection!
Fine work there.
If it's not too vulgar to ask, what kind of $ has gone into the engine?

Hey D...take a squizz at the satin "black" on the '09 R1's.
Comes up looking wicked man.
Oh...still shooting flames? :shifty:

gosh ... lost track of it really .. started right after a muppet cut a corner and went up my headlight while i was sitting at a light a few years ago and i found out that the go-fast bits were cheaper than the OEM.. im guessing about $NZ6k in parts.. $NZ15oo in machining.. did all the spannering myself.. might roll up to Frosty's place this morning and let Shaun tickle the Ohlins up a bit.. nice day for a ride :Punk:

yea .. might do the satin black on the ThunderAce but Spooky needs to stay Retro
only fires flames out when im running the Blue Voodoo Juice :)

I've always thought the colour scheme looked nice. A simple blue/white does look good on most bikes! (the new Daytona 675 SE is a superb example).
Perhaps "lifting" the look with the pearl through the same paint layout/locations, and incorporate your graphics underneath the clearcoat?
Look forward to seeing the final result!

the white on the FJ's already has a pearl shot through it .. with a matte clearcoat should look like polished quartz

I'm sure it'll look mint!
One question though about the polished metal. Is your painter planning to use the same matte clear as the rest of the bike, or is he using specific metal clear coat?

havnt got that far yet .. he's having a tussle with his landlord so the paint may have to be on hold till he gets a new location...
