In a rare fit of enthusiasm, I actually cleaned the boots on Wednesday night. Got the old snoseal out and had a go at them while the room was all toasty from the fire. Left them to soak 24 hours and then buffed em up last night when the room was again toasty. Came up pretty well really...maybe I oughta get offn my arse more often...
Definitely works better when the room is real hot I would hafta say...

Yeah, I did mine the other day, when I Nikwaxed the jacket'n'gloves.
Although I would have to say, you couldn't call it cleaning, as I left the road spooge and brake dust on (strangely, only the right boot had that on), and applied SnoSeal over the top, sealing it in. (If there was sno on the boots, I guess that would've been more betterer to seal in...)
I did my boots outside (because they were grubby), so it was coldish. I <s>remdeied remdiedide</s> fixed that by using the hot air gun to melt the SnoSeal into the leather after I'd given them a good coating, then buffed them up.

Tch tch....I would never do that...:nono:. I rubbed mine with a rag first. At least it took the surface coating of road spooge off...

"I fixed that by using the hot air gun to melt the SnoSeal into the leather after I'd given them a good coating"

Generally not a good idea to heat up boots like that, it affects the glue holding the soles on. Well it does on tramping boots anyway, I have seen a fair few pairs of boots that have fallen apart after people try to dry them too close to the fire...

Well..I thought about that but when I asked her she just said "Fuck off!!!"

Unlike a fire, a hot air gun has a thermostat, so you can control how much heat you apply. Cunning, huh? So I kept the heat to just enough to melt the Bee Zwacks, which is actually 5% of NotVeryMuchAtAll.
Do you really think I'd deliberately sabotage a $450 pair of boots?

Boobs that need cleaning are best avoided.

Bike boots that need cleaning always get a severe brush off to remove all of the crap.

Buff up really nicely once they are completely dry.

I'd have to agree with that. But maintaining their cleanliness can be fun...:devil2:

Thanks, I have a new hot air gun and hadn't thought of that. Come to think of it, I haven't thought of any uses other than removing stickers and (hopefully) house paint.

If I get sufficiently bored during the weekend I just may SnoSeal the boots...

I think I'd be disappointed if you post a thread about cleaning boobs and it turned out to be about cleaning boots.

Bugger. How about a thread about cleaning boobs, that is about cleaning boobs?

yeah, hopefully not :p

i'm quite into my mountaineering, worked part time in a climbing gear shop for the last few years while studying - you would be suprised at the number of people trying to claim warrenty on boots they have dried out in front of a fire and the soles have peeled off :p

sometimes the manufacturers reglue/replace them, sometimes not...

I have a pair of white boots that need a little TLC.

So what should I use to clean/condition the leather?

(bike boots)

When I was in the army we used to stuff our boots with newspaper, wash them down, dry them off, buff them up and apply liberal amounts of boot polish then place newspaper over them and use the iron to smooth it all out and melt the polish into the leather. Once completed an awesome shine can be achieved with a spit polish and lots of elbow grease.

Hmm....what kind of boots are they? (many aren't actually made of leather....) but if they just have some light scuff marks a little Jif on a damp rag works wonders (be careful not to rub too hard though as you risk taking the coloured outer layer off). Otherwise just soap and water or a water based foam type cleaner (like for car seats) is probably the safest.
If they are real leather you need to be very careful what you use to condition them as anything that is wax or oil based like most conventional soloutions will tend to discolour them, which is fine if you want off-white boots...
Might be worth a trip down to ye olde shoe shoppe to see what they have? :)

Umm, yes...is it me or you who's getting around?
I'd try the warm water and soap/detergent then some Jif for any stubborn scuffs (using caution as above), if still looking manky then try the shoe shop for some white polish or even white dye.
Sorry to hear about your previous owner, I'd look after you much better....

Does the same conditioning go for leather clothing - I have a little leather vest that needs a touching up? More of a inside bit of clothing. Don't want to get it all bees waxy, but get it all soft & supple.

So.....let me get this straight, you have a tight fitting leather vest that needs touching up on the inside? Sounds like a challenge, but I'm 'up' for it...

If I didn't know better I would have thought that was some sort of double entendre! Of course as you well know, I was innocently enquiring as to the specific area requiring touching up, so that one could apply the correct solution.... :bleh:

I'm no good at those sort of quick wit jokes. <_<

But thanks for help with boots - will see how the cleaning (edit: touch up) goes. :sunny:
