View Full Version : Do NOT make bike thieves life easier by providing information on here

I had a PM in response to my "How many bikes can you have in your shed?" thread pointing out that the thread made bike thieves life easier.

I would hate if that was true. I have now added a warning in the thread.

But it got me thinking what else are we doing on KB (and other sites) to help asswipes steal our bikes?

Here a few things for us all to consider that I can think of:

- Do you have personal information on your profile that makes it easy to find where you live and where your bikes are?
- Have you in your profile or somewhere else detailed your security arrangements?
- We all are proud of our bikes, and on a site like KB part of it is to tell the world when we have a new toy. Is this making thieves life easier?
- Do you have more detail on your profile that only "Friends" can see? And if so, are you allowing anyone to become a "friend"?
- If you were a bike thief, could you, by using the information that you have provided on KB (and other sites) be able to find where your bike is? In profile, in threads, in PM's?

I am not trying to make you all paranoid, but please keep in mind: Just because someone rides a bike or has a profile on a site like KB does not make them honest...

If only that were true - unfortunately there are not as many honest people in this world as we would all believe.

Good post Conquizitidor

I show my number plate to the world every time i ride my bike, not sure how having it in a photo is any worse.

so what are you suppose to do? not add any friends?
I joined KB for the social asspect (originaly so I knew when the summer rides were), I wouldn't need to if all I ever wanted to do was ride on my own,
some people seem to forget that when it comes down to it their bike is just metal and plastic, sure I take security precautions, but in the end thats why I have it insured

EDIT: also I have noticed on a few cases that I can see the "Friends only" details of members even if they're not on my list

Which is why you should never put your correct details on rego forms.

I generally blank my plates in any picture I put on KB as a matter of habit - only takes a second to do.

And I generally blank out any phone numbers/addresses I put on KB after a week or two, when the thread is no longer relevant.

All you have to do is make your bike harder to steal than the next person's...

Reminds me of a mouse trap I made. Two steel rings (sort of made out of flat steel outside one approx 10cm wide and inside one a round one approx 15cm diameter) Wired up mains to them Phase to one and Neutral to other. Put some tasty bread with peanat butter in the middle. Friend mouse anyone??

Can just see when the police comes to get the dead thief. "Sorry constable, must have left the angle grinder plugged in. I knew the cable was damaged, but shit, never realised that it was gonna connect with the bike! I promise to be more careful next time!"

Good grief. Paranoia strikes. A couple of phone calls and a copy of the Whitepages(TM) and it's not that hard to find where people live.

Instead of worrying about Evel Bastards stumping up with the requisite dosh to do a rego search, make sure that your bikes are secure and fully insured.

I care not a fig if my rego appears in photos of my bike. I have better things to do than fanny around with MS Draw whiting it out.

I can answer that. You actually have to change the default setting on here to "only friends can see your details" otherwise it automatically defaults to all can see. I understand there is some work going on in background to change the default to friends only.

Who cares, that's why I have insurance. What a paraniod existence I would have if I was worried that some punk was going to nick my bike. Sure I don't take chances, the bike has an alarm and the garage is locked up but if it's nicked I get to go bike shopping.
