View Full Version : Round 3 ouch

I fell off and it hurt haha !
Ok ok i'll elaborate a bit !
Got to the track feeling great after having had some old man hassels with the gammy knees for a few weeks prior and was looking forward to knocking some laps off on the new toy !
Hadn't really looked at the tyres closely, as i'd only done a test day and 1 day of round 2 due to a sad state of fitness and cramping up early on day 2 so just checked the cold pressure and chucked the warmers on !
Plan was to just go out and pootle round for a while, wasn't too worried where i was placed on the grid as i'm not in the points, so it was all about track time and ride fitness !
So when F1 quallifying came round i was keen as catshit (where does that saying come from) to get out there and ride !
1st lap or two i used to regain the feel of the bike seeing i'd only ever ridden it once before and was taking it nice and calmly around splash and higgins due to the water oozing out of the track !
But unfortunately the old "got to push boundaries" kicked in and i started tagging on to some faster guys, trying to pick up the pace !
Bike was feeling good, nice and stable and i felt like i could really go for it (my go for it lol) so i did !
But like a true noob i thought i could push the same in every corner and Splash got me good !
Thought the last lap was a good one, qualifying wise, but decided on one more hot lap as i wasn't feeling sore in the hands at all and thought to myself i hadn't felt any movement on the wet spots, so fear was the only thing holdng me back and flew into splash, flew down on my side, flew across the track, spinning and sliding backwards onto the grass ! The front had just washed out on me, tucking my (obviously far too tense) arm inward to the tank, which is how the bike and i hit the deck !
It is truely amazing how much can go through your head in those seconds your sliding like, Aaaaarrrrg my bike, wow the leathers are working, i can hear the scraping but cant feel it, Aaaarrrrg my bike, then grass, waaagggh my bike !
Got up and uggh it hit me, felt like id been kicked in the side by a horse (while using my little finger as a block)
Ran over to the 675 and struggled to pick it up as i was truely winded ! Went and sat out the rest of the session on the slip way !
A check of the bike back at the pits revealed no real damage, other than a knarled up bar end and lever, a side casing looking all scraped up, so washed her down and took it over to AJ (steward) for clearance to take it out again !
He suggested i go out in Clubmans to see how it handled and make sure it was all tikity boo, so i did that for a half doz laps !
Bike was sweet as, but after 6 laps i was feeling like shit, sore as hell in the ribs and the more i started blowing the more it hurt !
Back into the pits and had a hell job even getting off the bike or pulling off the gloves and jacket, but was determined to HTFU and get out there for F2 qualifying, had to be just bruising !
So i did just that, got back on the horse and qualified second to last haha, the confidence i had that morning was smashed and i was screwing up near every time i came into splash or higgins ! Lost 4 seconds on the F1 qualifying time i'd set !
Was pretty determined that i wasn't gonna let being a pudding stop me from riding the bike all day so lined up for F1 race 1 and the adrenylin of the start and lap 1 was all i felt, but by lap 5 (and a blue flag, shit was i going that slow) i was blowing hard and every breath was a moan so yep ANOTHER DNF
Got back into the pits and said to Heidi, you win !! Lol she had had a serious face on since i went down and was hard to get a smile out of her !!
So had her help me out of the leathers and went over to ask Terry gallway if he had found a battery for Jamies bike he was on the hunt for !
He hadn't so that was stripped out of mine and after F2 race one we also stripped the rear mount bolt (which had sheared during race 1 and left his gear lever sliding out) !
So there i was 2nd round in a row being the spectator lol Great to watch, but rather be out there and here i am now off my nut on morphine based pain killers rambling endlessly haha !
Have succumed to nurse Heidi and will go have some xrays tommorrow
No excuses ! I went into splash far too hot, too early in the day, on a tyre which i see now should not have been on there !
Still have a hell of a lot of fitness work to do and some running into brick walls wouldn't go astray to HTFU
Thanks to the guys and gals who give their time to marshall things out there so we can endulge !!!
Cheers !

Bad luck Bill! Glad you're not too banged up, but I guess it shows you're trying hard.
Remember rule #1: To finish first, first you gotta finish!

Oh so that's why you got the Tamals! Poohs and wees - sorry to hear you took a spill. HUG for Heidi - tough job standing by watching your love crash and then go out for more when they perhaps could do with sitting the next one out. OK OK hug for you too then and pop a few Tamals for me eh?!
Hope you are back in the saddle and fighting fit again soon :sunny:

Bad luck Bill ! Didn't realise you had banged up the ribs when you were around our pit garage. Having bruised or cracked mine 3 times in the last 12 months I know they can be quite painful.
Heal up fast and seeya next round.

Tony's on the right track (excuse the pun), I reckon tapping the empty glass to signal it's empty should do the trick.

Proof's in the the snoring, half a bottle of bourbon on a tram every 4 hours last night and i slept like a baby for 6 hours when i did finally hit the pillow, good for another 6 hours sleep tonight and then i may have to go back to the bottle shop for more meds !!!

Piece of mind at Round 4 was the reason i was gonna get the xrays ! If its torn cartiledge or just badly bruised, no worries, but if there is a break, i wouldn't want to fall on that side again after just 4 weeks, being old, fragile and paranoid about not being able to breath etc etc !
Be pissed if it does turn out that way, was looking forward to doing the long track agin !

Well i tried that haha to no avail, she's doing everything else to help but wont aid me in anything to do with the pleasures of the bottle !!!
Well i spent the summer, replacing new tyres for every race meet/track day and then scrimped on the coldest month of the year !
That'll learn me, the front tyre has like a bloody crust over it, it's that fooked after maybe 3 heat cycles and a couple hours track time !
Mr Forbes and Davies i need help !!!

haha the drugs are yuck but bloody handy right now (hence a big stockpile of em, don't really like the effect opiates have on me)
Your lil bust up was a bit more serious Billie, i think i was still sliding when i got to my feet and started running to the bike lol the pain didn't really hit till i tried to pick it up
That's sommit that surprised me, i had a bit of trouble when it came to get it up out of the mud, but i was blowing hard and didn't really catch my breath till back in the pits !

Aww please way i forget things and have to turn around to get em (like saturday) it could well be that i'll be late again !
Them ladies were telling me to do this & do that ! They must have all sensed a weakness when i couldnt pull my own gloves off after that last session of my day !
Feel better now? Haha ya missed a couple !!!
I bloody hope that's an out lap guys, cos if you're doing sixteens taking the corner with so little lean on Clive, I've got some good news about how to get into the fiteens.
Donno bout an out lap but the next couple of shots in that sequence show how slow i was going in that F2 qualifier, just wanted to qualify (2nd to last haha) and try and ride it off ! Had lost all confidence in the tyres and think i was screwing every line up at that stage too think the fastest lap in that whole session was 3 seconds slower than lap 3 of the first qualifier of the day haha Goneburga !
Not taking away from the fact that you are right and i gots me lots of body to move around and get hangin off in my riding style yet anyway (love to find a couple of shots of the off and see how lazy i was being when i had my wee lie down)

Funnily enough i know a couple of dudes just like that, but try to avoid hangin out at pubs with em too much now, they nearly always get me into some sort of trouble lol

Sorry to hear about the spill there Bill.
Splash is a trap for sure, especially in winter. As there are only two lefts on the short circuit, the left hand side of the tyres never really heat up. On the right before splash, keep it in tight longer than you would think, this gives you more space to take splash, hence less lean angle, with an option to pick it up if you do feel the front sliding away. Rule of thumb for me is wait till at least lap 4 before taking a tighter line into splash, and even then.....

Cheers mate, yeah i think it was taking a tight line that got me, there was a line about a foot out that was dry apart from 4 or 5 trickle like wet stripes running down towards the rumble (sure ya know them lol) which i was trying to keep to, and of course that line had me entering tighter than i should've and the rest is history ! Noticed it later as i ran wide on exit on a couple of occasions (was a bit cagey about leaning it over on the damp spots again :shit:)
And as for feel !! Whats that ? Have felt the odd movement in the rear at times but Am i too tense on the bars, shit damper, suspension ? Cause i've never felt anything come from the front
Thats the first front wash out i've had and it was WAM lol no warning, even crushed the end of my pinky tween the clutch and bar end when i hit the mat !
Tyre is def dodgy now though, quite crusty !

Yep, I can only really make a few assumptions as I was not there! Your in the 1st part of your racing learning curve...so you may not be going quite fast enough to be getting untoward feedback from your front end, it usually crops up in the braking areas first.
Having said that, you can lose the front so fast, that it's all over rover before you know it, it has happened to me at splash in summer no less
Sounds like a track mentor could be a fast track to faster laps and good bike set up. They prob still have practice days on Fridays at manfield? You know who you can call

On ya mate, that would be nice ! \
Got to think slow down to go faster again too ! Was feeling too good and a bit bulletproof on saturdays 1st session so when Sketchy came past on T2 I was thinking choice, a good opportunity to try and pull a hot lap out of the bag and set off after him ! Did ok too i thought, held on to him for half a lap but the back straight and dunlop seen him and another who'd flashed by, get some good distance on me, so was all alone without their lines, trying to do the same pace for another hottish lap and yeah but nah lol
Shit i'm still 4 seconds off the pace i was doing on the speed 3 so track time and good set up plus a few good lines would be invaluable !

Mmmm bit of procastination there mate but i did feel it click when i coughed last night, which not only brought a flinch but also a frown lol
Give it more rebound, or more rebound damping mate?
I think one will help, and the other not. In that order. Was planning on backing off the damping clicker, so give it more rebound, lost it on the apex so would have been on the gas and obviously (add the fact i dont get off enough) the rebound wasn't there to keep rubber down on the mat !
Suspension on the daytona is basic at the best and i have the rear comp set pretty hard so it dont squat and rear rebound soft to keep it down under brakes but hadn't really changed the front from when i bought it yet !
