Had my first off today.

Time: About 3:30pm
Where: The coast just before Maraetai heading north

Was riding through the Maraetai twists along the coast when I hit a pothole or bump through a corner and got the wobblies, which sent me into the ditch and side on to the clay cliff at about 70km/h. Was trying to restore control until the bike got back on the road and gripped like a mo fo, instantly throwing my off like a bucking bronco! I tumbled around and slid along the road for about 10 metres with the bike in front of me...coming to rest just short of the rock-infested drop down to the beach!

Damage

Bike: Broken left had wing mirror, both left indicators, scratches on front fairing (was running it naked, i.e. no side fairings thank god), fucked foot peg and clutch lever. Otherwise my baby is ok :-) I even rode it home! Pants are write offs as they took most of the knee impact, and jacket all torn up too. Will upload pictures soon.

Me: Grazed wrists and bruising on ribcage, left elbow and left knee, and a damaged ego! Find it bloody difficult to walk now but hoping a sleep will sort that out.

End result: Absolutely gutted about dropped her, but glad she's not too bad. Lesson learnt and happy I didn't injure myself too bad! Thanking all gods and guardian angels for my gear - it could have been much, much worse.

A couple of late nights in the garage ought to put things right.

Now, where's my beer!

Really? I thought 70km was slow for a crash, considering most riders come off at around 100 (don't they?)

And yes Im very lucky!

70km/h is more than fast enough during an accident to get some pretty decent injuries. Sounds like a great learning experience. :)

My old bike was written off at "only" 30kph crash. Also I woudn't think it's safe to jump off from a moving vehicle at 50kph even with the full gear on :msn-wink:

......

 You'll have to look up your own records for that data. From anecdotal evidence I've always thought most accidents happened at less than 70 kmh.

Sorry about the crash, I got a spare CBR250rr mirror and some other random small insignificant bits if you want. Free of charge, PM if you're interested. :first:

Had my first off today

Seems like a pretty poor attempt. Most on here would have had their knee down, on a 25kph corner doing at least 70 kph when suddenly 4wd cut them off.

Good that your ok tho.

Dude :) I came off at 30km/hr and fracture a rib, tissue damaged the rest and hurt my shoulder.. and all I hit was the ground :P

You done well!!!

All the best for your recovery of your bike, as for yourself, your a lucky boy! :)

You just gained some experience without body cost! Thats that way I look at these things :)

Yeah, you have to watch that stretch mate - there's often rocks on the corners from the cliff, and sometimes if there's been a recent rock fall that's been cleared away by the council, there's still a thin layer on top of the seal that can be quite slippery. From memory it's quite clay-ish there too, which means slippery times to be had by all.

What a bad way to end the weekend!

(Also, I just stole Biker Bargain's last MC22 footpeg for my NC30 - as they're $164ish retail, you might have a bit of fun hunting for some second-hand ones (There's a pair on TM at the moment for 75 each, which is THREE TIMES the price they ought to be, being second-hand). ;)

Yeah I can think of a couple other crash's today... non fatal. No injurys to rider, just the bikes! Grit and Ice was out in full force in some parts of the road today.

Excallent day none the less, so many bikes out today was good to see dispite the running nose! hehe

At slower speeds, most aren't as alert as they would be at speed... you got lucky and survived though. Good gear helps.

See ya on the road ...

Oof! Sorry to hear about that, ya darn lucky ya know! :sweatdrop Cliffs one side, sheer drop with rocks the other! :shit:

The biker gods smiled upon you and lo, you are relatively okay! Just remember to get arnica or some other anti inflammation ointment or cream slapped on, the pain/stiffness may hit you when you least expect it!

So, you just picked yourself up and the bike and got yourself home?

Sorry to hear about that, jetboy - but glad you and the bike are both going to survive ok!

Dude :) I came off at 30km/hr and fracture a rib, tissue damaged the rest and hurt my shoulder.. and all I hit was the ground :P

...

Well I came off at 0 (nil/zilch/zero) kph & got fractured ribs and concussion! And the bike was written off! (The car that hit me wasn't doing 0 kph but that's a minor detail.)

And then I had to get up before I went to bed and lick the road clean...

Yeah man, I was riding with a few mates so they stopped to make sure I/the bike was sweet, then we rode to Maraetai town to check everything out and went home from there. Adrenaline must have been working because now I'm sore as and probably could'nt ride. :violin:

My worst crash was at 20kmh, I clipped my kidneys on the mirrors as I went over the handel bars, Pissed blood for a week after. Its not how you fall that kills but how you land and come to a stop.

At 70Kph on a corner, swerving around the pothole is not so easy, so you did need to take pot luck through it.

Many congrats to you on getting away with what could have been quite nasty.

Well it turns out that sleeping on it doesn't solve the problem. Im off to A&E soon to get checked up - I can barely walk and my ribs hurt like crazy! Only god knows how I managed to ride home yesterday...must have been adrenaline or something!

Ahh, thought something like this would occur, thus the painkillers/ointment etc, glad to hear you are getting yourself off to the A&E finally! Take it easy out there ... and remember it only hurts when you breath and laugh! :msn-wink:

Yeah it can take about 24 hours until your ribs if bruised go all stiff, then it really hurts!

All the best for the speedy recovery, for the ribs, if sore when lifting etc.. avoid it. Best advice I can give, and after a week or two, have a few hot showers and do some stretch. A wheat bag is good before getting into bed laying on your back etc.. I found that hurts the most!

Still can not lay on my front without being in alot of pain from 2 months ago! 1 fractured rib, and the rest soft tissue damage. Time heals it, it might seam like forever but all of a sudden you will get better.. the pain will linger on for a long time but it will strengthen up.

Just keep taking deep breaths etc.. it is very important that you do not start shallow breathing etc.. could get pneumonia if you shallow breath too much.

Take care dude.

Avoid sneezing at all cost :) That's worse than both! hehe

If it is that bad, see if they can give you sleeping pills as you may have found it hard to sleep through the pain. Codine helps too, both are addictive though so watch that.

Sorry to hear jetboy, glad you're relatively OK, it could have been much worse, 70km/h is enough for serious injury. If the crash was due to a (unsignposted) pothole, I wonder if you could get the local council to pay for the bike repairs (insurance excess or actual repairs).

Know what you mean. You always feel worse in the morning once all the adrenaline has worn off! I came off and put the handlebars through my abdominal wall a couple of years ago...picked the bike up, rode home then went to hospital. Adrenaline works wonders!!
Glad your (mostly) ok. Take it easy and most importantly, get back in the saddle!

very lucky you didnt go the other way and land on those rocks man. I had a crash 2years ago on my 250 down coro loop at 100ks sumthin over shot a corner leaving me facing an oncoming bmw so decided to continue my course off the road onto a grass verge and pray that i could ride it out, but no both wheels slipped out leaving me sliding with one leg under the bike until that came to a stop hitting the post of the electric fence i kept tumbling all i was thinking was tuck ur arms in. anyway i came to a stop 30meters on the other side of the electric fence dont ask me how i got through the fence because to this day i dont know. i manage to walk away from that with just a sore foot. the bike was fuct. and i was only wearing normal jeans and tex jacket and sneakers. bike gods looked after me that days thats for sure.

Right - the end result is that I have a heavily bruised leg and 2x small fractures in the ribs. The doc gave me prescriptions for a shite load of drugs and sent me on my merry way.

Have discovered that laughing, sneezing, coughing, turning, and laying on my left side is all to be avoided.

On the bright side I seem to have located parts to get the bike back up and running, so it's just a matter of getting me working and it's back in the saddle! I can't wait!

Crikey! Sounds like you been in a scrum and ruck and maul! Ah well, got some good droogs and hopefully you won't have to bend down and pick stuff up too much.

Glad to hear you got some medical assistance and check up! :sweatdrop

Leyton

Good work on getting that checkup dude, Take it easy. You will be noticing by now limitations of lifting etc.. will be kicking in. Be carefull around this time as your fractured rib or ribs are not as strong and if you keep disturbing the healing tissue it scars and takes longer to heal :)

So, in summary, Take it easy hehe, keep breathing deep ones. And when you can without causing discomfort or pain.

Go for a good push bike ride to get your lungs working, it helps with the healing! And you feel better imediately.

You will feel some movement in your chest from time to time, like its loose in there.. bit of clicking from time to time.. ignore that.. just take it easy.

Plenty of hot showers, don't get out of bed too quick, roll out as uposed to streight up.

Avoid bar fights :P

You may find lifting with the upposeing arm to your fractured side hurts more.. that is because you are now realising how many muscles we acually use !!!

After 3 weeks your back muscles will start to hurt, thats because you may not have used them as much as you normaly would, ignore that..

All the best dude :)

Any questions feel free to flick me a PM, I am still recovering and am up to my ribs are stronger stage but still have pain, so I know what you will be going through ehhe.

Oh yeah.. condine makes one constipated and it is addictive.. so keep a monitor on that. And Sleeping pills are slightly addictive as well, but FArrrrr good sleep for my first week..
