It was raining quiet hard this morning and I noticed a dude riding his "something" Triumph in gumboots...

Dumb, comes to mind.

I used to wear gumboots all the time on my bike when I was a deckhand. Bata steel capped white boots with the orange soles. Had one nasty accident wearing them, the steel cap was ripped out of the left boot, but my foot was sweet. Dumb my arse, if they fit and a quality boot, then they are a good substitute for a riding boot. However now I've got Stylmartins, stuff the gumboots... :niceone:

Well, many years ago, when I wasn't mental, but was considerably poorer, I used to wear gummies on me bike, when I wasn't wearing sandshoes, jandals  or workboots.

But that was before I was a Lert, and before I could afford to buy StyleyYetWaterproofBikeBoots, like the StylMartians I now own. Mind you, I don't think you could buy them, seventybazillion years ago.

Pity - it wasn't fun wrecking my bike wearing jandals.

Always heard that gumboots are unwise as they tend to grip the road if you spill and cause you to flip if you started off feet first or just get ripped off your feet if you go head first. Was told to wear leather that "grips enough to slow you gently"

Dunno, personally, never arsed off wearing gumboots or quality leathers - usually wearing shoes or work boots.

There are some really fetching gumboots in the shoe shops at the moment - lovely floral prints all over them - was thinking of getting a pair to wear on my bike to complete the whole look!!! :msn-wink:

We used to wear fireman's gumboots at trials - they have a steel toecap and steel shank in the sole...kept your feet dry, until you stepped into a really big hole.I often wore red band shorties on bikes in the rain,no worries.

Yellow souls?! Sounds like they need an asianoplasty to reflect the way they feel on the inside!

Used to wear the lace up sort. With the steel shank. Only thing really with ordinary gummies is that they might get tiddlywinked off in a bingle. The lace up ones are as good as leather boots for that.

Problem with gummies on a bike is that your feet get f****ing cold.

I used to have a pair of those too - toe cap and steel shank, bloody good boots. We used to ride off road on tracks cleared with a slasher through gorse - those boots were covered in pimples from all the gorse needles imbeded in them.

The boots kept gorse spines out OK. And if you wrapped some puttees around your legs they were OK too. But , oh man, if you happened to come off right into a pile of the gorse that had been slashed and dumped in a big spikey pile. Oh man, that was painful. And the gorse spines were nasty when they broke off under the skin. Used to get all pussy and have to open them up with a razor and needle and squeeze out the pus and the little broken off bit of gorse that was causing it.

Worn the old steel cap gumboots to the last two cold kiwis due to excess water leaking from the sky. A couple pair of wooley socks didn't go amiss. The gumboots are generally higher than leather boots giving more overlap of the wet weather trou, cold dry feet are better than cold wet feet :ride:

What's a good boot for commuting and the odd trip out of town. (And if some smart arse suggest I should try riding a bike instead of a boot I'll :shake: )

Any pair of boots that give support to the ankles. If you have the mulah then a pr of bike boots from the bike shop heaps of options to choose from, if not then work boots are fine even Johnny Rebs are fine (mine have worn out for the second time) though I wear steel caps work boots as I need them at work and work issues them every year. For the longer rides out of town I use the forestry high calf length steelcaps lace ups. Around town just the old slip ons. I'm too old to be worried about style and too tight to spend the cash on fancy do dads. :ride: safe

spent a day clearing gorse over a month ago, still find the odd spine in my hands!!

I wear a pair of John Bull Combat boots to uni as they are easier to walk around in than riding boots if I aint being bothered changing. The soles on theses are about to wear right through anyone know of anyone that is good at resoleing???
